To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that l, FRANK W. acitizen of the United States, residing at SanBernardilio, inthe county of San Bervnardino and. State of California, have in'- Lock-Nuts, of which ication.
L The present in ments in means for securing nuts and bolts against accidental removal, and the primary object of the invention is to provide a device of this the following is aspecicharacter -which shall be simple, cheap, easy to manufacture and which may be readily employed upon any ordinary bolt construction, and further `which ,will perform the .functions for which it is adapted with ease, accuracy and certainty.
With the above and other objects in viewthe improvement resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and falling ln the drawing: Figure l is a view of a nut and bolt constructed in accordance with the present invention, Fig. 2 is a sectional 'view approximately on the line 2-2 of Fig.
ing member or 1, Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the locking element, and Fig. 4 is a sectional view through the channel portion of the nut.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, l designates a lbolt of any ordinary construction and 2 a nut therefor. The nut is provided with a passage 3 arranged tangentially thereof, the said passage communicating with one of the sides or faces of the nut and also communicating with the threaded bore of the nut. What may be termed the rear wall of the opening provided between the bore of the nut and the passage 3 is beveled toward the said passage toprovide an inclined wall 4.
Arranged 'within the passage 3 and having one of its ends normally extending therethrough and projecting upon -one of the sides'of said nut is a locking member or dog` 5. The dog 5 comprises an elongated member of alength to be snugly'received within the passage, but the end 6 thereof is normally' projected through the assage, through thegmedium of aspring 7 w ich eX- erts a compression the passage and the, inner end of the lockdog.` .5. The member 5 is Speccaton of Letters Patent.

' Application filed. January 28, 191'5. Serial No. 4,8?9.
the key or dog passage, the said enlargement having an arcuate or curved face which `isprovided witli" transverse teeth 9, and the end of the enlarged or thickened portion adjacent tliefangular wall yor provided with an angular shoulder l0 which snugly engages with the angular wall 4, bev retained in` such position by 'the spring `When a wrench isapplied ing end 6 or the locking member 5, the said locking member or dog will move first raf dially of the axis of the boltopening, the same being directed by tlielshoulder li@ and wall 4,' and the teeth 9 will he entirely forced out of the openingbetween the passage 3 and the bore of the nut,so that the nut may be readily unscrewed from the bolt. The widened or thickened portion 8, opposite its end provided with the inclined shoulder 10 is formed with a straightlwall or shoulder ll, `which normally contacts with a similar straight wall or shoulder l2 provided by the transverse wall of the said opening between the bore of the nut and the channel 3.
By reference to Fig. 2 of the drawing it that the passage 3, at what may be termed the lower wall thereof, is intersectedby a longitudinally extending slot 50, the said slot, together with vthe passaget being sufficient lto permit of the enlarged widened portion 8 being inserted ,therethrough. 1When the said widened portion 8 is broiigi'it adjacent the opening which com municates with the bore of the nut, the dog is rotated, so that one of the flat sides of saidenlargement 8 will contact with thevllat wall provided therefor in the passage, anti the said passage as well as the slot 50 is then closed by a plug 60.
`From the above description, talrenin connection with the accompanying drawing, the simplicity of the device, aswell as the ad it is thought, be perfectly apparent tothosek skilled in the art to which such invention appertains without further detailed description.
Having thus described the invention, what lclaim is:
ln a nut lock, the combination with a bolt shoulder 4r is upon the nut and contacts with the projecttween the said passage and the boreof the nut inclined, a locking member adapted to be fully 'received Within the passage, a-
spring Within thepassage and contacting between the end Wall thereof and the innerv end of the looking 'dog forforcing the seoond end of said dog through the passage and normally sustaining the same outward of the passage, said dog being formed With a (fopis of this patent :nay be obtained for five Ygentes each, by addressing the Commissioner of atcnts,
Verse teeth which are normally projected in the bore .ofthe nut, andthe finner shoulder between the .enlarged portion and the dog 'proper being inclined and resting' upon the aforementioned inclined Wall between the bore'of the-,nut'and the assage.
In testimonywhereof I afi'lix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
