HIRAM B. DAVIS, OF DENVER, COLORADO.
STOOL AND THE LIKE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HIRAM B. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stools and the like,
of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in chairs, stools and the like, and its primary object resides in the provision of simple and durable means for rendering a stool, chair or other contrivance similarly used, vertically resilient.
, My invention is particularly adapted to be drivers of street railway cars, as it relieves the body from the effects of the injurious jarring motion of the vehicle to which under ordinary circumstances, it is constantly subjected.
An embodiment illustrated in the accompanying drawings in the various views of which like parts are similarly designated, and-in which,
Figure 1 represents an elevation of a stool constructed in accordance with my invention, in its normal condition, Fig. 2, a similar elevation of the stool, showing the depressed condition of its seat by a superposed weight, and Fig. 3, a section taken on the line 33, Fig. 1 and drawn to an enlarged scale.
Referring to the drawings by numerical reference characters, 2 designates the body portion of the stool which is composed of a top 3 supported upon four legs 4 which as usual are connected by a number of rungs 5. The top has at quadrant points of a circle substantially concentric with the vertical axis of the stool, vertical openings 6 lined with metallic bushings, for the passage of the members of a seat supporting frame. This frame consists of two U-shaped members 7 placed at right angles to each other with their transverse portions underneath the top 3, and with their parallel leg-portions extending vertically.through the bushings of the openings 6 in which they are slidably fitted.

bers project into openings which are formed 1n; the seat 8 of the stool in correspondence wlth those in the top 3, and they are threaded for the application of nuts 9 which are- I disposed in countersinks at opposite ends of the seat openings.
A helical spring frame between the top and the seat for the resilient support of the latter, its inner diameter but slightly exceeding the exterior width of the frame members to limit its lateral displacement. A stool or the like thus constructed, being vertically resilient, provides a comfortable elastic seat for the body and at the same time relieves it from jars communicated to the stool from the movements of a surface upon which it is supported.
The construction is simple and durable and may be readily applied to stools already in use, by merely boring the openings for the reception of the frame, in its seat which thus becolmes the top of the body-portion of the stoo Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is:
1. A stool or the like, comprising a support including a top which has four vertical bores, a seat secured at the upper ends of a frame composed of two U-shaped members crossing each other, the leg-portions of which pass through said bores and the crossparts of which are beneath the said top, and a spring disposed between the said top and the said seat to resiliently support the latter.
2. A stool or the like, comprising a support including a top which has four vertical bores, a seat secured at the upper ends of a frame composed of two U-shaped members crossing each other, the leg-portions of which pass through said bores and the crossparts of which are beneath the said top, and a spring coiled around said frame between the said top and the said seat to resiliently support the latter.
, 3. A stool or the like comprising a support including a top which has four vertical bores at quadrant points of a'circle, a
