Application filed October 3, 1913. 1 Serial N 0. 793,259.
Be it known that I, J 0B BERRIMAN,'a can.
zen of the United States, residing at Virden, in the county of Macoupin and State of Illi nois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Car-Couplings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in car couplers, especially of the type used for mine cars and designated as automatic mme car couplers.
An object of my invention is to provide a device of the above character, which will be reliable and eflicient in operation, inexpensive and simple in construction, and whlch will be economical and labor saving in its use.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists of certain peculiarities of construction and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through the ends of two mine cars, showing the device of my invention in its working position. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the rear end draw-bar head constructed according to my invention. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the front end braw-bar head of my invention. Fig. & is a sectional View taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention, 1 designates the front end drawbar head and 2 the rear end draw-bar head formed on the ends of a draw-bar 3 carried in the center of the floor of a mine car.
4: is a draw pin carried by the front end draw-bar head 1, which pin passes through holes 5 in said head.
6 designates a slot extending longitudinally of the draw-bar head 2, said slot being formed for the-admission of pin 4 carried by the opposite head. Slots 7, of which there are two on either side of the bifurcated coupler 2, are formed at right angles to pin a, and are adapted to admit swinging pins 8 pivoted to lugs 9 at points 10 on the side of the head 2. One pin 8 is provided for each pair of slots, the pins 8 being carried one on each side of the coupler.
11 designates a coil spring, or similar means, for providing tension on the ends "of pins 8, causing said pinstobe drawn against the outer walls of slots 7.
In operation the cars bearing the drawbar heads will be brought together, the front end head 1 being positioned so that pin 4: will enter the slot 6 of the head 2. As the pin passes into said slot, pins 8 will be swung around the pivoting points 9 by pin 4, against the tension of spring 11. When pin 4 has passed sufficiently far into the slot 6, pin 4 will pass out of reach of pins 8, whereupon springs 11 will draw the pins 8 back into position against the outer walls of slots 7. The coupling will then be completed.
In carrying out my invention, it is preferable to provide bumpers of sufficient length on the ends of the mine cars in order that said bumpers will take up the force of impact between two mine cars before pin a will travel the entire depth of slot 6, thus protecting pin k from the force of impact. Upon uncoupling the cars, pinwill be withdrawn from holes 5 in the front end drawbar head, whereupon the heads may be drawn apart.
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that the device of my invention I provides an automatic mine car coupler which will be reliable and effective in its operation, economical and labor saving in its use, and which is of inexpensive and simple design.
Changes within the spirit and scope of the appended claim may be made as it is obvious that the details of construction and arrangement of parts may be varied in many ways.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is In a car coupling device, companion forked coupling heads, one of said heads having pin abutting portions for a pair of coupling pins, a pair of coupling pins spanning the space between said forked portions of said head and engaging said abutting portions on opposite points with respect to the centers of said pins, a pivot device on each forked portion for pivoting one of said pair of pins to one portion and the other pin to the other of said forked portions to permit said pins to swing in opposite directions into and out of coacting relation with said abutting portions, said pivot devices being located to dispose the coupling stress of said pins wholly on said abutting portions, and a single coupling pin removably mounted in the forked portions ofsaid' remaining *head ilfg todispbseishegreat'est"stress on=the single 10 for coupling engagement between its ends pin at points opposite its center and said With said pain of pivoted pins between the 'stress"b'eing divided between said pair of ends of the latter, said pair-:bf pins being, pins siibstaiitia'lly as described.
at substantially right angles with respect to said single pin and said pair of pins andsaid JOB BERRIMAN' single pin being at substantially right angles WVitnesses:
to the line of-pull,"the two'point engagement DOMINIO; GIAOHETTO,
of the single pin With said-pair-ofapins serv- BOBERT- EAIBFULL.
