Patented Aug. 17, 1915.
Application filed August 25, 1914. Serial No. 858,508.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Lnn H. JONES, citizen of the United States, residing at Bloomfield, in the county of Greene and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fence posts and has for its object the provision of a cheap and durable post which may be rapidly and economically manufactured and easily set up in position for use.
The invention also has for its object the provision of a post which will be strong without excessive weight and by the use of which the strands of wire fences will be effectually held in position against the post.
These several stated objects and such other incidental objects as will appear from the following description are attained in the use of a structure such as is illustrated in the accompanying drawing which shows a perspective view of a fence post embodying my invention set up for use and having a portion of a woven wire fence supported thereby.
In carrying out my present invention, I employ a sheet metal blank which is rolled to form a cylinder 1, the edges of the blank being brought together so as to form a butt joint as shown at 2. Between the side edges of the blank which form the butt joint 2, retaining leaves 3 are struck up from the blank and are stretched sufficiently to provide spaces 4 between the respective retainers and the body of the blank through which a key or fastening rod 5 may be inserted. The fence wires 6 are stretched along the line of the fence in the usual manner and will lie against the post, as clearly shown in the drawing, the strands passing between the retainers 3. After the wires are in position the keys or holders 5 are inserted down wardly through the several retainers so as to pass over the fence wires and thereby hold the same firmly against the body of the post, it being understood that the diameter of the key and the dimensions of the several spaces t will be such that the key will bind firmly against the opposed faces of the retainers and the body of the post so that through the retainers and thereby release the wires. The retainers 3 are, also, formed with slight extensions 8 thereby providing recesses on their inner faces which are engaged by the key so that lateral movement of the key will be prevented and the key will be held firmly to the post while at the same time ample clearance will be provided between the post and the several retainers to admit the key.
WVhile I have shown the post as supporting a portion of a woven wire fence it is to be understood that the particular pattern of the fence is immaterial and the post may be used equally as well in connection with plain fences or barbed wire fences. The post can be very economically manufactured and very readily set up along the line of a fence and the insertion of the key to hold the fence wires against the post is a very simple matter. As the post is a hollow cylinder it will have the maximum strength with minimum weight and as the retainers are formed integral with the body of the post they will very effectually hold the key against the fence wires.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new, is
1. A sheet metal fence post comprising a tubular body having vertically alined circumferentially disposed leaves struck therefrom, said leaves being integral with the body at both their ends and free thereof along their upper and their lower edges and provided on their inner faces with vertically extending key seats spaced from both their ends, and a key inserted through all said seats and held to the outer surface of the body by the leaves.
2. A sheet metal fence post comprising a cylindrical body having vertically alined circumferentially disposed leaves struck therefrom, said leaves being integral with the body at both ends and free of the body along their upper and lower edges and pro vided on their inner faces with vertically extending key seats spaced from both their in testimony whereof grams ends, and a key inserted through all of said in presence of two Witnesses seats and held a ainst the outer body by v said leaves, theufiper end. of: saidtkey being LEE v j projected upwardly and dewn-wardiyte-en rwltnessesz gage over the uppermost leaf and be sup- GEORGE E.
