To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. REARIGK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore city, State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in CheclcCanceling Attachments for Adding-lvlachines and the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in the stamping or printing attachment for adding or other registering machines disclosed in Patent No. 1,117,602, dated November 17, 1914, said attachment being designed to make an impression on a check, bill, etc., as the crank handle of the machine is actuated to register the amount of such check or other paper.
The present invention has for its object to provide a novel and improved inking device for the stamping or printing member, whereby the latter is automatically inked, and also to provide a novel and improved actuating connection between the crank handle of the adding or other registering machine and the stamping member.
With the herein stated objects in view, the invention consists in a combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the stamping and inking mechanism; Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the parts shown in Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is an enlarged vertical section on the line 44 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a cross-section on the line 55 of Fig. 4, and Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the actuating connection.
Referring. specifically to the drawings, there is shown dotted at 10 a fragment of the adding or other registering machine to which the invention is applied, so much only of the machine being illustrated as will suflice to make clear the connection of the invention therewith. The machine has a crank handle 11 the movement of which actuates the mechanism by which the amount or. number represented by a depressed key will be accumulated by the registering devices, and a record thereof produced by certain recording devices. As this type of machine is well known, and its structure is immaterial to the invention, a further description or illustration is deemed attachment. Adjacent to the rear edge of the base plate is mounted a casting 13 having longitudinally spaced bearings 14 and 15, respectively, in which a horizontal rock shaft 16 is journaled. From the bearing 14 rises a standard 17 carrying at the top a stationary horizontal spindle or. shaft 18 supporting an inking device. The shaft 16 projects from the bearing 14 a sufficient distance to take the hub 19 of a rocker arm 20 carrying the stamping or printing member to be presently described, said hub being fixed on the shaft so that the arm swings in a vertical plane and carries the stamping or printing member toward and from the top of the base plate 12 when the shaft is backing plate 24 carrying the type plate.
011 the opposite side of the base-plate is mounted a clamp which secures to this'side connected to the arm 20. This member is a plate 25 having an outstanding lug or car 26. The outer end of the rocker arm 20 s forked, the branches of the fork being indicated at 27, and the lug 26 extending loosely therebetween. The fork branches carry a transverse pivot bolt 28 passing through a perforation in the lug. The plate 23 is therefore 'pivotally carried by the rocker arm 20. The clamp which securesithe plate 25 to the plate 23, is a plate 29 having at opposite edges tongues 30 which are shaped to engage the back of'the plate 25. Above and below the plane of the pivot bolt 28, the front edges of the fork branches 27 have of the-plate a member whereby said plate is mally in vertical position, with the type plate facing outward.

This backing bar has turned up ends 37 which support the shaft 34. From the plate 23 are struck up ears 38 having overhanging portions which receive screws 39 passing through the flattened ends of the shaft 34. The inking device is an ordinary pad 41 mounted on a backing plate 42, both being carried by a holder 43 having side flanges 44 shaped to engage corresponding edge portions of the pad, and top and bottom flanges 45 to engage corresponding edges of the backing plate. On the back of the holder is a clamp 46 which secures said holder to the outer end of an angular rocker arm 47 having a hub 48 at its inner end, said hub being loosely mounted on the spindle 18so that it is free to rock thereon. The outer end of the rocker arm has a flat platelike enlargement 49 which is engaged by the clamp 46.
Thepad 41 is normally in vertical position in front of the type plate carried by the plate 23 of the stamping or printing member, said type plate being in contact with the'pad. A means is provided for swinging .the pad out of the way of thestamping or printing member when the latter makes a working stroke. This means comprises the following parts: The hub 48 has a bearing 50 extending at a right angle or perpendicular to the axis of the hub 48 and the spindle 18. In this bearing is mounted a slide in the form of an elongated tube 51 having stop collars 52 at its ends, and in the slide is slidably mounted a rod 53. One end of this rod is connected to across pin 54 pivotally mounted in and extending between the fork branches 27 of the rocker arm 20. The parts 51 and .53 provide a telescoping connection between the stamping or printing member and the inking. pad. When the parts are in their normal vertical position, the rod 53 is telescoped within the tube 51, and said rod and tube are in vertical alinement with the rocker arm 20, and. above the same. When the rocker arm 20 swings down to carry the stamping member to the check,
bill or other paper to be canceledor otherwise marked, the rod and tube cause the hub 48 to rock on thespindle 18 in a direction to swing the arm 47 upward to the position shown in Fig. 2, thus taking the inking pad out of the way of the stamping member as it swings down. As the rocker arm 20 continues to descend, the rod 53 is withdrawn from the tube 51, and when the rocker arm swings back to elevate the stamping member and to restore the same to its normal position, the rod slides back in the tube, and when the stamping member passes.

The pivotal connection between the rod and the rocker arm, and the sliding connection between the rod and the tube assure the free swing of the rocker arm and the parts carrying the ink ing pad, and said parts work smooth and the bracket members is made by apin or rivet 61. The pivotal connections enable the bracket members to be placed in various positions for attachment to the machine 10 or to a shelf or'other suitable support adja cent to the machine. I
On one end of the shaft 58 is made fast a crank arm 62 to the outer end of which is pivoted, as indicated at 63, a pitman 64 carryin'g at its outer end a clamping member 65 whereby connection is made with the crank handle 11. The clamping member has a headed stud 66 which seatsin a slot 67 in the end of the pitman, whereby said member is pivotally and detachably connected to the pitman. A pivotedlatch hook '68 engageable with the studprevents accidental disconnection of the clamping member from the pitman, the latch hook being carried by the pitman.
On the end of the shaft opposite the end Y to which the crank arm 62 is applied, is made fast a crank arm 69 having a pitman connection 7 0 with the crank arm 22. The connection between the crank arm 69 and the pitman 'is an adjustable one, the latter having a series of apertures 71 to receive the connecting pin 72. The crank arm 69 is adjustably connected to the shaft 58 so that its angularity may be varied. This connection is made by means of a sector plate 73 having a hub 74 whereby said plate is fixed on the shaft. The crank arm has an opening through which the shaft 58 passes, and carries a bolt 7 5 which extends through an arcuate slot 76 in the plate 73. Upon backing the nut 77 carried by the bolt 7 5, the crank arm may be swung about the shaft to the extent of the length of the slot 76, and after the adjustment is made, the crank arm is fastened by the nut 77. The adjustable fastening between the parts 21 and 22 is the same as that just described.
By the hereinbefore described connection between the crank handle 11 and the rock shaft 16 the latter is actuated every time the former is swung tooperate the machine 10, the rock shaft operating the stamping mechanism in the manner already described. The adjustability of the connection enables the same to be readily attached to difierent styles and makes of recording machines.
On the base plate 12 is a pad 78 on which the checks or other papers to be canceled or otherwise stamped are placed. The base plate also carries an edge guide 79 for the checks or other papers. The pivotal connection between the stamping member and the rocker arm 20 gives the former sufficient play to come squarely down on the check or other paper to make a clear impression.
While the preferred embodiment of the invention has been shown and described, it will be understood that various changes and modifications in the structural details may be made without departure from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
The invention is also not limited to adding machines, but may, with equal facility, be applied to other registering machines having a crank handle or similar actuating element.
I claim:
1. A stamping mechanism for registering machines, comprising a stamping member, a swinging support for said member, means for operating said support, an inking device, a pivoted support for said device, and a connection between said supports for swinging the inking device out of the path of the stamping member, said connection comprising a rod pivoted to the support of the stamping member, and a slide carried by the support of the inking device, the rod and slide being slidably connected.
2. A stamping mechanism for registering machines, comprising a base, a vertically swinging arm mounted on said base, a stamping member carried by said arm,
means for operating the arm, an inking device, a pivoted support for the inking device, a connection between said arm and the support of the inking device for swinging the same out of the path of the stamping memher, said connection comprising a rod pivotally connected to the arm, and a slide carried by the support, the rod and slide being slidably connected.
3. A stamping mechanism for registering machines, comprising a stamping member, a swinging support for said member, means for operating said support, an inking device, a pivoted support for said device, the last-mentioned support having a bearing which is perpendicular to its pivotal axis, a slide mounted in said bearing, and a rod pivotally connected to the support of the stamping member and having a sliding connection with the slide, to swing the inking device out of the path of the stamping member.

A stamping mechanism for registering machines, comprising a base, a vertically swinging arm mounted on said base,a stamping member carried by said arm, means for operating the arm, an inking device, a pivoted support for the inking device, said support having a bearing which is perpendicular to its pivotal axis, a slide mounted in said bearing, and a rod pivotally connected to the aforesaid arm and having a sliding connection with the slide to swing the inking device out of the path of the stamping member.
5. A stamping mechanism for registering machines, comprising a base, a vertically swinging arm mounted on said base, a stamping member carried by said arm, means for operating the arm, a standard rising from the base, a spindle carried by the standard, an inking device, a support for the inking device having a hub which is pivotally mounted on the aforesaid spindle, said hub having a bearing which is perpendicular to its pivotal axis, a slide mounted in said bearing, and a rod pivotally connected to the aforesaid arm and having a sliding connection with the slide to swing the inking device out of the path of the stamping member.

A stamping mechanism for registering machines, comprising a base, a vertically swinging arm mounted on said base, a stamping member carried by said arm, means for operating the arm, an inking device, a pivoted support for the inking device, a connection between said arm and the support of the inking device for swinging the same out of the path of the stamping member, said connection comprising a rod pivotally connected to the arm, and a tube slidably carried by the support, in which tube the rod telescopes.

A stamping mechanism for registering machines, comprising a stamping member, a swinging support for said member, means for operating said support, an inking device, a pivoted support for said device, the lastmentioned support having a bearing which is perpendicular to its pivotal axis, a tube slidably mounted in said bearing, and a rod pivotally connected to the support of the stamping member and telescopically connected to the tube.

A stamping mechanism for registering machines, comprising a base, a vertically swinging arm mounted above the base, a stamping member having a lug, and a pivot bolt carried by the arm and passing through the lug for pivotally connecting the stamping member to the arm, said arm having stops located respectively on opposite sides of the pivotal connection of the stamping member therewith to limit the swing of said member relative to the arm;

A stamping mechanism for registering machines, comprising a base, a vertically swinging arm mounted above the base, and a stamping member pivotally carried by the arm, said arm having stops located respectively on opposite sides of the pivotal connection of the stamping member therewith to limit the swing of said member relative to the arm.

A stamping mechanism for registering machines having a swinging actuating member, comprising a stamping member, a swinging support for said member, a rock Copies of this patent may be obtained for shaft carrying the support, a crank arm on the rock shaft, a shaft having crank arms, a connection between one of the last-mentioned crank arms and the first-mentioned crank arm, a connection between the other one of the second-mentioned crank arms and the aforesaid actuating member of the registering machine, bearings supporting the second-mentioned shaft, and supporting brackets to which said bearings are'pivotally connected.
11. A stamping mechanism for registering machines having a swinging actuating member, comprising a stamping member, a swinging support for said member, a rock shaft carrying the support, a crank arm on the rock shaft, a shaft having crank arms, a connection between one of the last-mentioned crank arms and the first-mentioned crank arm, a connection between the other one of the second-mentioned crank arms and the aforesaid actuating member of the registering machine, bearings supporting the sec0nd-mentioned shaft, supporting brackets for the bearings, and pivoted ears carried by the brackets, between which ears the bearings are pivotally mounted.
