LEWIS KEEN AND ZIGMAN ADAMSKI, 0F GLENLYON, PENNSYLVANIA.
LAMP-HOLDER.
Application filed October 17, 1914.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Lnwrs KEEN and ZIGMAN ADAMsKI, citizens of the United States, residing at Glenlyon, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in lamp holders primarily intended as an attachment for miners caps, and the principal object of the invention is to provide a lamp holder of this character which may remain a permanent fixture upon a cap and which will efiectively hold a lamp against side or lateral movement and which further will retain the lamp in a vertical position regardless of the inclination of the cap, such as is assumed when the wearer of the cap is in a stooping position.
A further object of the invention is to provide an attachment comprising a lamp holder which, when secured to the cap, will serve as a reinforcement therefor as Well as a protector for preventing obstacles inflicting injury to the wearer when such obstacles are contacted.
Otherobjects and advantages will appear as the nature of the improvement is more fully understood, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the improvement upon a miners cap showing the same supporting a miners lamp, Fig. 2 showing the cap tilted and the lamp retained in a vertical position, Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the improvement detached from the cap, and Fig. 4 is a central vertical longitudinal sectional view through the same.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, the numeral 1 designates a miners cap of the ordinary construction. Secured to the cap, centrally of the peak, is my improved lamp support 2, the support preferably comprising a body formed from a rectangular strip of leather, the same being bent to provide a face member 3 and a top member 4. The face is connected to the cap at the lower portion thereof preferably through the medium of rivets 5, and likewise the angular top 4 has its corners provided with similar rivets 6 which pass through the top of the cap, and if desired the rivets may pass through suitable openings in straps? and 8 respectively which are arranged within the Specification of Letters Patent.

cap, the ends of the rivets being secured to the straps to prevent the withdrawal of the rivets. It is, of course, to be understood that the support 2 is not necessarily constructed of leather, as the same may comprise an angular plate of any suitable material, but in the present instance the bent leather, comprising the support has its top member 4 provided with a metal plate 9, the same being secured thereto in any desired or preferred manner, and the said plate 9 is bent over the face 3 of the support and secured to the support adjacent the edges thereof. The portion of the angular plate 9 arranged over the face 3 is provided with a central cut-away portion, forming the same with fiat spaced arms 1010, the arms being arranged, of course, adjacent the opposite edges of the face 3, and the said arms, at the lower portions thereof, are formed or otherwise provided with right angular outwardly projecting flanges 11-l1. The upper portion'of the plate arranged upon the face 3 is centrally formed with a groove 12, and the said face 3 below the groove is provided with an opening, preferably of a V- shaped formation, as indicated by the numeral 13. The top member of the plate 9 adjacent the corner thereof is provided with a pair of longitudinally extending spaced ears 14, the said ears being arranged central of the groove 13, and the rear central connecting member 15 of the upper angular portion of the plate 10 provides a pivot for a latch 16. The latch 16 is constructed of some spring metal and is formed from a single piece of such material. The metal providing the latch is formed with an outwardly extending angular portion 17 disposed a suitable distance from its pivot, and the said angular portion may, and prefer ably does, abut with the inner edges of the ears 14 when the latch is swung over the said ears.
The numeral 18 designates a longitudinally extending portion forming the catch proper for the latch, the said portion 18 having its end curved to provide a finger hold 19, and the catch 18 is adapted to frictionally contact with the upper longitudinal edges of the cars 14. The portion 18 of the latch is centrally provided with a downwardly extending lug or detent 20, the same adapted to be received between the ears 14 and to contact with the opposite inner walls thereof when the catch is sprung over the said ears. The upper member of the angular plate 9, between the ears 14 and preferswinging of the lamp will be effectively prevented. Thelatch 16 effectively retains the lamp upon the support, and by forming the face member 3 of the support with the opening 18 the cap may be tilted and the hooked portion 23 will pass through the said opening and retain the lamp in an upright, or
' vertical position (see Fig. 2).
Copies of this patent may be obtained for From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the simplicity of the device as well as the advantages thereof will, it is thought, be perfectly apparent to those skilled in the art to which such invention appertains without further detailed description. v v
' Having thus described the invention, what we claim is: I c Y L A lamp support for miners caps comprising an angular member including a front and a top and connected to the cap, a metal reinforcing plate for the support, said reinforcing plate having spaced flanges arranged upon the face of thesupport, longitudinally extending spaced ears upon the top of the reinforcing plate, said plate and top member of the support having alining openings arranged between the ears, a pivoted spring catch having an angular portion adapted to contact with the rear edges of the ears and a spring member adapted to overlie the ears, and said spring member having a downwardly extending lug adapted to be received between the ears.
2. A lamp support for miners caps including an angular member comprising a face and a top and connected with the cap, spaced spring flanges upon the face of the support, the said face, above the flanges, having an elongated opening, the said face having a groove arranged above the opening and communicating with the top, longitudinally arranged ears upon the top at the corner of the support and arranged one to each of the opposite sides of the groove, said top having an opening between the cars, a latch, said latch including a pivoted member having a spring end providing a catch which is adapted to be swung over the ears, the said catch being formed with a downturned lug which is adapted to be received between the ears.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
