Be it known that I, VINCENT CARTwRiGHT VrcKERs, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Vickers House, Broadway, lVestminster, in the county of Lon-` don, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Door-Latches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to door latches of the kind that are provided with means for forcing the'door open when the latch bolt is withdrawn, the said latches being more particularly intended for tightly fitting doors such as are employed on railway carriages, motor cars and other road vehicles.
According to this invention a lever or pivoted member which for sake of convenience is hereinafter referred to as a pivoted push piece is so constructed and arranged in relation to an actuating member under the control of the door handle, that the operation of the latter in the act of withdrawing the latch bolt causes the said push piece to be forcibly displaced about its pivot and to exert a thrust between the door and its j amb for forcing open the door.
In order that the said invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into effect, it will now be described more fully with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:-
Figure 1 is a vertical section through a latch to which the improvements are applied, the latch bolt being represented in its withdrawn position. Fig. 2 is a similar view to Fig. l but shows the latch bolt in its protruding or locking position. In both Figs. l and 2 the latch is shown detached from the door. Figs. 3 and 4: are horizontal sections taken approximately on the lines 1-*1 and 2-2 of Figs. 1 and 2 respectively and showing the latch in position on the door. Fig. 3 shows the door partly opened by theaction of the push piece.
A is the body of the door and B is the lock frame which is attached thereto in any appropriate manner.
C is the cover plate carrying projections which form guides c c c3 for the latch bolt D, and the member D that operates the pivoted push piece G. This member D is, in the example shown, in the form of a rectangular sliding block. The latch boltis adapted to be actuated by either of the handles E or E, as is well understood, the handle E extending vertically through the latch and the body of the door so as to occupy a position for enabling'the occupant of the vehicle to conveniently grasp it and the handle E being situated on the exterior of the door to enable the latch to be operated from the outside of the vehicle by a rotary movement. The said handle E is pivoted at e and -extends vertically through the latch bolt D and the sliding block D', which are slotted at Z and al for this purpose. The pivoted push piece G is angularly displaceable about a vertical pin g which at its inner end is screwed into the lower one of two lugs c2 c2 carried by the :latch plate C. The said pivoted push piece G has three arms or projections g g2 g3. The arm g lies within a recess within the jamb of the door, the arm g2 enters a slot d2 in the sliding block D and the arm g3 lies behind a lever J which is loosely mounted on'the pin g; has its free end adapted to be acted upon by the inclined portion d of the sliding block D.
H is a spiral spring acting upon the inner end of the latch bolt and normally tending to keep the latter in its locking position. On displacing the handle E the portion c thereof comes into contact with the inner end of the slot d of the latch bolt D and moves the latter inwardly against the resistance of the said spring H, whereupon the portion e2 of the said handle comes into contact with a projection d3 at the inner end of the slot d of the sliding block D so that the continued movement of the said handle causes the sliding block D to be moved inwardly. This movement of the sliding block D causes its inclined portion d* to displace the lever J which exerts a powerful turning movement on the pivoted push piece G through thc arm g3, thus pressing the arm g against the door jamb and forcibly pushing the door open (see Fig. 3). The pushing effort of the pivoted push piece is still further augmented by the forward portion of the slot d2 in the sliding block coming against the arm g2 of the pivoted push piece as the said sliding block completes its inward movement. When the said handle E is released, it resumes its original position under the influence of the spring H acting on the latch bolt D, and by acting upon the forward end of the slot d in the sliding block D returns the latter to its forward position. The closing of the door brings the nose g of the pivoted push piece in contact with the door jamb, thereby imparting the reverse motion to the sliding block D, through the. arm g2 of the pivoted push piece engaging with it, the arm g3 on the pivoted push piece operating to return the lever J to its normal position also; the parts thus assume the position shown by Fig. 4. When the door is opened from the outside by the handle E', sufficient pressure can be exerted by the operator to pull the door open Without the assistance of the pivoted push piece which consequently remains inoperative.
Although the invention has been described more particularly with reference to latches operated by a hand lever such as E, it is not intended to be limited to this type of latch.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. A door'latch provided with a pivoted push piece, a handle which is carried by the door and indirectly.connected to said push piece, and a slidable latch bolt, in combination with means whereby the act of withdrawing said latch bolt causes said push piece to be forcibly displaced about its pivot and to exert a thrust between the door and its amb.
2. In a door latch, the combination with the slidable latch bolt thereof and the means for actuating it, of a pivoted push piece, an actuating member carried by the door for forcibly displacing said push piece about its pivot, and means also carried by the door for operating said member in the act of withdrawing said latch bolt and causing the push pieceto exert a thrust between the door and its jamb.
3. In a door latch, the combination with the latch bolt and the means for actuating it, cfa pivoted push piece, a slidable actuating member for forcibly displacing said push piece about its pivot, and means for operating said member from the bolt actuating means.
4:. In a door latch, the combination with the slidable latch bolt thereof and the means for actuating it, of a three armed pivoted push piece adapted to exert a thrust between the door and its amb, and means carried by the door and operated from the bolt actuating means for forcibly displacing said push piece about its pivot.
5. In a door latch,the combinationwith the latch bolt and the means for actuating it, of a pivoted push piece adapted to exert a thrust between the door and its amb, an actuating member therefor, means for operating the actuating member during the movement of the latch bolt, and means interposed between said member and push piece for augmenting the power transmitted to the push piece at the early part of its movement.
6. In a door latch, the combination with the latch bolt and the means for actuating it, of a pivoted push piece, a slidable actuating member therefor, means for operating said member during the movement of the latch bolt, and means interposed between said member and push piece for augmenting the power transmitted to the push piece at the early part of its movement.
7. In a door latch, the combination with the latch bolt and the means for actuating it, of a pivoted push piece, a slidable actuating member therefor, means fon operating Said member during the movement of the latch bolt, a lever interposed between said member and push piece, and means whereby the sliding movement of said actuating member is transmitted through said lever to the push piece at the early part of its movement.
8. In a door latch,the combination with the latch bolt and the means for actuating it, of a pivoted push piece, a slidable actuating member therefor provided with an inclined portion, means for operating said member during the movement of the latch bolt, a lever movable about the axis of the pivoted push piece and normally lying with its free end adjacent to the inclined portion of said member, and an arm on said push piece with which the lever coperates during the early part of the push pieces movement.
9. In a door latch, the combination with the latch bolt and the means for actuating it, of a pivoted push piece, a slidable actuating member therefor provided with an inclined portion and a slot, means for operating said member during the movement of the latch bolt, a lever movable about the axis of the pivoted push piece and normally lying with its free end adjacent to the inclined portion of said member, an arm on said push piece with which the lever coperates during the early part of the push pieces movement, and a second arm on said push piece with which the slot in said member cooperates during the later part of the push pieces movement.
