To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ARTHUR J. JEFFERY, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Burks Falls, in the Province of Ontario, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Pins; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in clothes pins.

The principal object of the invention is to provide a metallic clothes pin which will have a spring clamping action and which can be readily applied to or removed from a clothes line.

Another object of the invention is to provide as an article of manufacture, a clothes pin formed from a single piece of spring wire which is bent so as to form a clothes pin which, when applied will effectively hold clothes to a clothes line.

A further object of the invention is to provide as an article of manufacture a clothes pin which is extremely simple in construction and is cheap to manufacture.

"With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out'in the claim hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claim may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

In the drawing: Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the application of a clothes pin constructed in accordance with my invention, Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation of the pin, Fig. 3 is an end elevation thereof, and Fig. 4c is a top plan view of the same.

Like reference numerals designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing.

Referring to the drawing, the invention comprises a clothes pin, which is designated as a whole by the reference letter A. This pin is formed from a single length of spring wire which is centrally bent to form an elongated loop 5, the wires thence extending in parallel relation to form side arms 6-6, the loop 5 being curved outwardly in a plane at an obtuse angle to the plane of the arms 6. The loop 5 and arms 6 conjointly form a clamping jaw 7. The ends of the arms 6 thence curve rearwardly at substantially right angles to the arm 6 and are then rebent to form outwardly inclined loops 88. It will thus be observed that the loops 8 are disposed at substantially right angles to the arms 6 and will conjointly form a finger piece. The ends of the loops 8 are then bent downwardly, as at 9-9, and are disposed in spaced relation in rear of the arm 6. The free ends of the wire thence extend outwardly, as at Ill-10, on either side of the arms 6 and terminate at their ends in eyes 11-11.

In practice, after a cloth 12 has been positioned upon the line 13, the clothes pin A is'taken hold of by the finger piece which is formed by the loops 8 and the ends 10-10 of the wire conjointly form an inner clamping body, which together with the outer clamping jaw 7 serves to securely retain the clothes 12 upon the line 13.

What is claimed is:

A clothes pin formed from a single length of spring wire centrally looped to form an elongated clamping jaw including parallel arms and a connecting bight portion, the ends of said arms being curved rearwardly at right angles to said jaw and in substantially parallel relation, and being thence curved oppositely and returned to provide loops conjointly forming a finger piece, the ends of the wire being then bent downwardly and converging toward the related arm and thence continued in diverging relation to either side of the first named loop whereby to provide a second clamping jaw, the angles of the wires formed by said converging and diverging portions coacting with the adjacent portions of the related arms to provide opposed clamping portions.
