To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES RICHARD HEATH, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Cashmere, in the county of Chelan and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements'in Locomotive-Injector Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to locomotive injector attachments. c
It is well known that in ordinary practice the overflow from locomotive boiler injectors is discharged alongside and near the railroad tracks. In cold weather this overflow freezes forming coatings. of ice near the tracks in railroad yards resulting oftentimes in very serious accidents to the railroad employees and which are a constant source of trouble and expense to remove. A.
The principal object ofmy invention is to overcome these difficulties by providing means for returning the overflow water back to the boiler feed system, thus preventing the promiscuous dischargeof the overflow alongside the tracks. j
A further object of the invention is to provide an injector attachment adapted to catch up and return the overflow directly back to the supply tank.
Another object of the invention is to provide an attachment of the class described in the form of a steam jet situated in the overflow conduit, and fed with steam from the boiler, and communicating directly with the supply tank, the valve for controlling pas sage of steam to the jet being operably connected with the injector valve, in such a manner that when the injector valve is moved to the priming position, the steam valve is opened whereby the steam jet may perform its functions during the priming operation and when the overflow ceases and the injector is properly working, further movement of the injector valve into full open position, will operate to cut off the supply ofst'eam to the jet. j j
A still further object of'the invention is to provide a device of the class described which will be extremely simple, durable, efficient in operation and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view which will become apparent as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully describedand Specification of Letters Patent.

claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several figures, of which Figure 1 represents a sideelevational view of aninjector with the attachment secured in place thereon. Fig. 2 represents a fragmentary elevational view partially in section, indicating the position of the parts when the lever is in priming position, and Fig. 8 represents a view similar to Fig. 2 indicating the position of the parts when the lever is in full open position.
Referring more particularly to the drawing a locomotive injector or inspirator of a standard type is indicated at 5. The steam pipe connecting the injector with the locomotive boiler is indicated at 6, and the water supply pipe leading to the injector from the water supply tank is indicated at 7. The valve controlling admission of steam to the injector is indicated at 8, and at 9 is shown the pipe connecting the injector with the boiler. a
An overflow pipe 10 leads from the injector, and the ordinary practice is to let this pipe discharge alongside the tracks of the railroad. My invention provides asteam jet 11 disposed in the overflow conduit 10, andcontrolled by a valve 12. Connecting valve 12 and the boiler is a steam supply pipe 13, and the valve is connected with jet 11 by means of the elbow 14. Communication between jet 1.1 and the water supply tank is established through a pipe or conduit 15.
The injector valve 8 is controlled by a lever 16 connected with said valve through a lever and link mechanism 17 A connecting rod or link 18 is pivoted at one endto lever 16 and atthe other end to a crank arm 19 carried on the stem of valve 12. In this manner valve 12 is operated simultaneously with the injector valve 8.
Before stating the operation of the attachment I will briefly describe the general principle upon which all injectors work.
The injector valve is partially opened to the priming position, so as to gradually let the steam into the injector in order to draw the water from the supply tank. While the injector is working during the priming position the water is not drawn into the boiler feed pipe 9, but overflows into the overflow conduit 10. This operation continues for a while until the, injector. has

parts being in the position indicated in Fig; 1, the injector valve is closed and no steam is admitted'through the injector. The passage way in valve 12 is at the angle indicated so that no steam is allowed to passthrough that valve. Upon pulling lever 6, into the priming position indicated in Fig; 2, the injector valve is partially opened, and valve 12 is turned so that the passage 20 establishes communication between pipes 12 and 14, whereby steam from the boiler is allowed to pass through the jet 11, thus catching up the overflow from the injector and discharging the same back through the pipe 15 into the water supply tank. As soon as the injector is working properly, and the overflow has ceased lever 16 is thrown into full open position indicated in Fig'. 3, thus opening the injector valve to its full extent. This operation throws the va1ve'12 into the position shown in Fig; 3, such position being that the passage 20 is again moved out of alinement with the openings in the valve case 21 so as to cut off communication between pipes '13 and 14:, and hence stop the flow of steamthrough the jet 11. If for any reason the jet 11 should fail to work, or in case it should be out (if order, the overflow water is discharged in the usual manner through the overflow conduit 10 alongside the track.
The attachment may be formed separately from the injector as indicated by the drawing", or if desired be manufactured integrally therewith.
Although I have described the preferred embodiment of my invention, I may desire to make such changes the construction, combination and arrangement of parts thereof as donot depart from the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
I claim 1. The combination with an injector having overflow conduit, a controlling valve, and a lever operably connected with the controlling valve, of a steam jet disposed in the overflow conduit, a discharge pipe leading from the jet to the source of water supply, a steam conduit leading item" a boiler to the steam jet, a valve disposed in last said conduit, and a link connecting last said valve and said lever,
' last said valve adapted when the injector controlling valve is in priming position to anew passage of steam through said-jet,
and further adapted when the injector controlling valve is in full open position, to cutoff the flow of steam through said jet, substantially as described.
2. The combination with an injector having communication with a water supply tank and with a boiler, and having an overflow conduit, a controlling valve and a lever operably connected with said controlling valve, of a steam jet situated in the discharge conduit, a discharge pipe leading from said steam jet to said water supply tank, a steam pipe leading from the boiler to said steam jet, a valve disposed in last said pipe, and means operably connecting last said valve and lever whereby last said valve is in open position only when said injector controlled valve is in priming position, and at other times is closed.
3. The combination with an injector having communication with a water supply tank and with a boiler, and having a control valve and a lever operably connected with said control valve, and further having an overflow conduit, of a steam jet communieating with said overflow conduit, discharge means for establishing communication between said steam jet and water supply tank, means between said boiler and steam jet for allowing passage of steam to the latter, means for controlling the passage of steam to said jet, and means operably connecting last said controlling means and said lever, and adapted to allow passage of steam through said jet only when the lever is in priming position, said jet adapted to pick up the overflow from said injector to discharge the same directly into the supply tank.
4. The combination with an injector having communication with a water supply tank and with a boiler, and having an overflow conduit and a control valve, of a steam jet communicating with the overflow conduit, discharge means connecting the steam jet with the water supply tank, inlet means adapted to allow passage of steam from the boiler to said jet, control means for controlling the passage of steam through said inlet means. and means operably connecting said control means and injector control valve, whereby to allow passage of steam through said jet only when said injector control valve is in priming position.
5. The combination with an injector having communication with a water supply tank and a boiler, and having a control valve and an overflow conduit, of a steam jet disposed in said overflow conduit, discharge means connecting said jet with said water supply tank, inlet means connecting the boiler with said jet for admitting steam to the latter, a valve for controlling the passage of steam from said inlet means, said jet when last said valve is open adapted to discharge the overflow from the injector directly into said water supply tank, said jet adapted when not working to allow discharge of the overflow from said injector through the overflow conduit.
6. The combination with an injector communicating with a supply tank and a boiler and having an overflow conduit, of a steam jet connecting with the overflow conduit and having discharge means communicating with said supply tank, means between the boiler and jet for allowing passage of steam through the latter, and a valve for controlling passage of steam through said jet, said jet adapted when working to discharge the overflow into said supply tank.
7. The combination with an injector having a control valve and having an overflow conduit, of a fluid jet communicating with the conduit, a discharge pipe communicating with the fluid jet, an inlet pipe communicating with the fluid jet, and with a fluid supply, a valve controlling the flow of fluid through said jet, and means operably connecting last said valve and the injector control valve, and adapted to move the fluid control valve into open position only when said injector control valve is in priming position.
8. The combination with an injector having a control means and an overflow conduit, of a fluid jet communicating with the overflow conduit, and having discharge means communicating with the source of fluid supply of the injector, and means controllable by the injector control apparatus for allowing passage of fluid throughsaid jet only when said injector control means is in priming position.
