CAR ATTACHMENT.
' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 22, 1915.
Application filed'July 15, 1913. Serial N 0. 779,144.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, HENRY W. GRAFF a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This-invention relates to new and useful improvements in car attachments and has for its object the provision of a device of the above character which may be attached to an ordinary street car when it is desired to remove objects from the track.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a device of the above character which may be easily and quickly put in operation without inconveniencing the operator.
A still further object of my invention is the provision of such a device which may be carried upon each individual car and which may be easily and quickly put in operation.
With the above and other objects in view I now proceed to describe my invention in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which, I
Figure 1 is a side view of a street car showing the device as it would appear when in operation, Fig. 2 is a top plan view similar to Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a detail view of the platform which carries my improved attachment.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference 1 indicates an ordinary railroad track of the usual construction upon which the car 2 is adapted to run, this car being provided with the usual platform 3, upon which is mounted the ordinary controller 4: and brake lever 5.
My improved attachment which is indicated generally by the numeral 6 preferably comprises a winding drum 7 which is rotatably mounted on a shaft. A suitable ratchet wheel 12 is secured to the shaft at the upper extremity and is adapted to cooperate with a pawl 12 which will permit the drum to be locked at the desired point. This drum 7 is provided at each extremity with the flanges 8 and is adapted to have wound thereon the rope or cable 9, which has one end. securely fastened to the drum and is provided at its opposite end with a suitable hook 10. This drum 7 is held in position by means of the arms 11 which are securedto the body of the car and in which the ends of the shaft carrying said drum are journaled. The upper end of the drum carrying shaft is preferably extended as illustrated at 12 and providedwith a squared end which is adapted to receive the socket formed on the controller handle indicated by the numeral 13 by means of which said drum is adapted to be wound.
The dash board of the car is preferably provided with an elongated aperture 1 1 which extends transversely thereof and which is provided with a guard roller 15 over which the rope 9 is adapted to pass when the same is being unreeled from its position on the drum.
A suitable sheave 16 is provided through which the rope is adapted to pass. This sheave has formed integral therewith a suitable eyelet 17 which is adapt-ed to serve as a means to secure a rope or cable 18 which is provided to hold the sheave in position on a fixed post 19.
It will be clearly seen that when it is desired to make use of my improved car attachment the sheave 16 is placed in position on the fixed post and the cable or rope 9 is unwound from its position on the drum 7. The hook member 10 is then passed around the sheave and secured to the object which is to be removed as shown at 20. Thus, it will be seen that when the car is reversed the rope will exert pull on the object which is blockading the way and said object will be withdrawn from the track at which time the rope may again be released and rewound upon the drum. Thus it will be seen that the car may proceed on its way and objects which blockade the track will be easily and quickly removed, without necessarily inconveniencing the operator of the car.
It is to be understood that in such cases as may be desired, I may eliminate the drum entirely by simply the use of a rope or cable having a hook on each end.
While in the foregoing I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, I wish it to be understood that I may change the specific arrangement of parts without in any way departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
What I claim is In combination. a supporting structure. a winding drum rotatably mounted upon the supporting structure, a cable wound upon said drum, a fixed post, a sheave secured to the supporting structure after the drum has 10 been secured against movement.
In testimony whereof aflix my slgnature 1n presence of two Witnesses.
HENRY W. GRAFF.
the post and operatively connected With the cable, a hook at one end of the cable, said hook being arranged to be attached to the object to be moved, the opposite end of the cable being secured to the drum, means to hold the drum against rotation in unwinding direction after the hook has been secured to the object to be moved, and means to move Witnesses:
