In order to be :able to substitute the narrow-slots in thc rotor by broad spaces and to thus entirely obviate the soiling of the plaiting strands, ii'itermediate Wheels are arranged between the existing driving Wheels and serve to connect those wheels together. This feature of the -invention enables a larger number of teeth to be omitted in the ring of tecth sttacl'aed to the rotor than hitherto and this renders it porsible to provide spaces which :ire large cnough to allow ot' thc thickest planing strands., or of a guide, being used for thx-i outer plaiting strand, which guidiJ may be made to act as n protector.
Another feature of the invention consists of :in arrangement by which thcbpbhins of the inner row are laced ou the side of the bobbin carrier or oi the bobbin carrier guide that is farthest from the point at which the threads are plaited together. By this arrangement it is possible to decrease the diameter of the guide body and hence the diamcter of the path traversed by the inner bobbin carrier as Well us that of the driving gear to the lowest possible limit. An economical advantage resulting from this is that the plaiting machines may execute a much larger number of revolutions per minuto without increasing the peripheral speed of the inner bobbin carrier and. that of the toothed wheels.
The invention is illustrated .in thc dr`awings, similar or equivalent parts in the varions figures having similar reference charactors.

5, showing a modification in which two rings of teeth are employed. Fig. 8 is a diagram of a feature of the invention according to which the plaiting machine et' Figs. 1 to 3 and 7 is provided with an inner row of bebbins which is arranged at the outer side of the guide way of these bobbins. Fixed to the baseplate l is an upright 2 upon which is mounted a support 3 the periphery of which is formed in the shape ot' a guide for the inner row of bobbins. r1"he upper guide way support 4 whose central axis coincides with that of the lower guide frame 3 may be fixed to the two standards 5 and 6. Revolubly mounted on the upright 2 is a rotor 7 that is rotated through bevel wheels 8 and 9 by the belt pulleys 10. The rotor 7 is provided with a ring of teeth 11 and a second ring of teeth 13 ot' equal size is fixed above the ring 11 by spacing pieces 12. Groups ot intermediate gear wheels 14 are mounted at different points of the circJJnference in the lower and upper guide way support and are in permanent engagement with the two rings of teeth. The inner bobbin carriers 15, which slide along a guidc-way at the periphery ot' the guide frame 3. areprovidedwith teeth at their top and lower edges. kWhen the rings of teeth 11, 13 and the groups of intermediate toothed wheels 14 rotate the bobbin carriers are moved along the guide way by the alten native engagement of their lower and upper rows of teeth with the teeth of the intei-mediate wheels. The guide way along which the bobbin carrier travels alternates between the lower and upper guide way supports 3 and 4 respectively. This arrangement permits of the outer plaiting strands which are taken from an outer circular row of bobbins, for instance as shown in Figs. 1, 3, being passed along a waveeshaped path over and beneath the inner bobbins without striking against obstacles. When the rings of teeth 11 and 13 that are iixed to the rotor 7 are rotated the engagement ot intermediate wheels 1i with the lower and upper rows of teeth ot the bobbin carriers 15 causes these to move in a direction opposite to that of the rings of teeth as indicated by the arrows in Fig. 2. From this figure it will also be seen that at the moment when a bobbin carrier 15 leaves a lower section of' guide way it slides onto an upper guide-way section. According to the feature of the invention shown in Figs. 4 to 7 the rotor 7 has a ring of teeth 11 or rings ot teeth 11 and 13 (Fig. 7) that are directed inwardly. Permanently engaged with these rings of teeth are the intermediate toothed Wheels 14 which are mounted on the same shafts as smaller toothed wheels 14a. In order that the speed of revolution of the ring of teeth and of the bobbin carriers may be the same the ratio between the diameters of the intermediate wheels 14 and 14 is the same as the ratio between the ring of teeth l1 and the circle described by the rows of teeth of the inner bobbin carrier 15. The axes of the intermediate wheels 14 and 14a run parallel to the axis oi the machine and they are mounted in groups alternatively on the bottom and upperguide way supportv at different points ot' the circumference of the machine. The inner bobbin carriers are driven alternatively by lower and upper groups of intermediate wheels and shift from lower guide-way sections to upper guide-Way sections. When the rotor 7 with its ring of teeth 11 or rings of teeth 11 and 13 (Fig. 7) revolves the inner bobbin carrier 15 is moved by the differential intermediate wheels 14 and 14a that engage the ring of teeth and with the teeth of' bobbin carrier. The bobbin carrier rotates at the same speed as the rotor but in the opposite direction. If two rings of teeth 11 and 13 (Fig. 7) are used the outer plaiting strand oscillates along a curved path between the two rings, but in a machine with only one ring of teeth,
as illustrated in Fig. 6, the ring is located in the plane of the inner bobbin carriers or beneath this plane. In the latter case the rotor must be provided with slots or notches (see 17 in Fig. 5) into which the outer plaiting strands may enter during their passage beneath the inner bobbins.
The machine represented in Fig. 8 differs from that shown in Figs. 1 to 3only in that the two rings of teeth 11 and 13 are held together by spacing pieces that are bent far outward in order that the inner row of bobbins, which in this case is fixed to the out/er surface of the bobbin carrier 15, may move without hindrancey past the rotor 7 that rotates in the opposite direction. The inner plaiting strand may be passed through a hole 16 of the inner bobbin carrier to the center where the plaiting operation takes place.

A plaiting machine comprising two concentric rows of strand bearing bobbins, a rotor for rotating the outer row ot' bobbins, means for moving the strands of thxJ itl() outer bobbins to and fro in the circular path of these bobbins, bobbin carriers supporting bobbins of the inner row of bobbins, upper guide-ways and lower guide-ways for the said carriers, a ring provided with teeth on said rotor, racks on the said bobbin carriers and gearing engaged by the said ring of teeth and alternately engaging first the one rack of a bobbin carrier and then another rack of a said carrier so as to rotate it in the opposite directi v)n to the said rotor.

A plaiting machine comprising two rows of strand bearing bobbins, a rotor for moving the one row of bobbins in a circle, two rings of teeth fixed to the rotorydriving wheels placed at different points of the circumference of the machine and engaging with the said rings, bobbin carriers for the inner row of bobbins, and racks at different parts of each bobbin carrier which engage aiternsitely with different ones of the said driving wheels and by which the bobbin carriers are moved in a `,ircle in the opp0- site direction to the said `toothed.y rings.
4. A plaiting machine comprising rows of strand bearing bobbins, means for moving the one bobbin row in a circle, means for moving a second bobbin row iny a circle inside the first circle Vand in an opposite direction to the first row, means for moving the strands of the outer bobbin row to and fro in the circular path of these bobbins, means for moving the strands of the inner bobbins in a plane circular path and bobbin carriers for the inner row of bobbins, the said moving means for the second bobbin row comprising driving means for the bobbin carriers which engage with the carriers at different surfaces of the saine alternately, the said inner bobbins being mounted on the sides of the said carriers which are directed outward from the center of their circular paths.

A plaiting machine comprising two concentric rows of strand bearing bobbins, a rotor for rotating the outer row of bobbins, moans for moving the strands of the outer bobbins to and fro in the circular path of these bobbins, bobbin carriers supporting bobbins of the inner row, a ring provided with teeth on said roter, racks on the said bobbin carriers and gearing en gaged by the said ring et teeth and alten nately engaging first the one rack of a btb-- bin carrier and then another rack of a said carrier and thereby rotating the same in the opposite direction to the rotor, said ner bobbins being mounted on the sides of the said carriers that are turned away from the carriers center of rotation.
