GHILDS SEAT.
Patented May 25, 1915.
Serial No. 803,533.
40,7 0. Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed. November 28, 1913.
the top side thereof, by a strip of canvas 3, or 1n any other suitable manner. The slats 2 extend transversely of the seat and are heldin unrolled rigid relation, one to another, by a pair of channel-bar edge- binding strips 4, 4, which closely fit over the ends of the slats, as shown. One end of each channel-bar 4 is closed, or partly closed, by an inturned tongue 5 at such end to provide a stop for limiting the longitudinal movements of the bars in one direction relative to To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CARLOS H. VVoLrnRT, a citizen of the United States, and a residentof Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Childs Seat; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it apbeing had to the accompanying drawings,
and to the characters of reference marked the seat.
thereon, which form apart of this specifica- Straps 6 and 7 are attached to each side tion. edge of the seat near the front and rear edges as, for instance, to the ad]acent ends of the respective front and rear slats 2 at the under sides thereof, as at 8. The straps 6 and 7 at each side may be in the form of a loop and preferably carry a sliding buckle 9 to which is adjustably attached a suspending strap 10 having a hook 11 at its upper or free end for engaging over the back of a straight-back chair 12 or other suitable support. The straps 10, 10 are connected by a cross-strap 13, and the straps 6, 6 are connected by a cross-strap 14, the latter serving to prevent a baby from falling forward out of the seat. It will be understood that this supporting harness for the seat may be made in numerous ways, novel in itself is claimed therefor.
It will be noted that each channel-bar 4 is provided near its forward end with a loop or opening 15 for the adjacent strap 6 to slidingly project through, whereby the bars cannot become lost or separated from the straps. Both side straps 6 and 7 of a pair also serve to retain the respective bars 4 in binding engagement with the seat, due to the upward passing of the straps around the bars.
The bars 4 are capable of being quickly engaged with or disengaged from the respective side edges of the seat whereby to retain the seat slats 2 in rigid relation or to permit a relative rolling or folding thereof. Upon a removal of the bars 4 from engagement with the seat edges to permit a lowering or folding of the seat, such bars together with the straps forming the supporting harness, are placed over the seat cross-wise thereof and the whole then rolled into compact form for shipping or packing, as shown in Fig. 3.
I wish it understood that my invention is not limited to any specific construction or This invention relates to babies and chilthereof, respectively,
drens seats and particularly to a seat adapted for attaching to the backs of dining-room chairs, or the like, or to other suitable supporting means, but is not restricted to such use as it may be used in any connection for which it may be adapted or appropriate.
The object of my invention is the provision of an improved seat of this character which is simple and inexpensive to manufacture, strong and durable in its construction, and capable of having the bottom or seat portion proper thereof lowered or folded in compact form for shipping or packing, whereby to enhance the practicability and commercial value of articles of this class.
A further object of the invention is the provision of simple and efficient means for securing the relatively movable parts of the bottom or seat portion proper of thedevice in rigid seat form.
The invention is fully described in the following specification, and while in its broader aspect it is capable of embodiment in numerous forms, a preferred embodiment thereof is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,-
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device embodying the invention, attached to the back of a chair. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device with portions broken away and removed and with the seat in condition for rolling up. Fig. 8 is a similar view of the device rolled up ready for packing, and Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail of a portion thereof.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the seat portion of a device embodying the rality of slats 2 placed edge to edgeand hingedly connected together, preferably at and that nothing arrangement of the parts except in so far as such limitations are specified in the claim.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is,
In a device of the class described, a seat portion comprising a plurality of hingedly connected slat members extending transchannel bars for fit- V versely of said portion, ting over respective side edges of said portion to prevent a relative unfolding move ment of the seat members, said bars. each having at its outer closed edge a strap receiving eye and also having an inturned stop tongue at one end of its channel, and a suspending harness for said seat portion having CARLOS H. WOLFERT. Witnesses v F. E. AUL, E. E.. THOMAS.
