Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAHN RAZNTCH, citizen of the United States, residing at Oloquet, in the county of Carlton and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ventilating Appliances;
and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in ventilating devices and more particularly to a ventilator applicable to the wall of a room and the primary object of the invention is to providea device of this character which may be readily operated at will to permit bad 'air in the room to be removed therefrom and fresh air to be circulated.
A further object of this invention resides in providing a'casing of cylindrical design adapted to be mounted in the wall andhaving hinged closures for its ends which are normally held closed.
Still another object resides in providing a connection between the closures for the casing whereby when one is opened the other will be opened and both of which are normally held closed under spring tension.
Still another object resides in providing a device which is simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be very efiicient and useful vj free end of which is provided with a ring in operation.
With these and other objects in View my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application: Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through a device constructed in accordance with my invention and applied to use in the wall of a structure, the ends of the device being shown open: Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the device, as seen on line 22, Fig. 3: Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the device: Fig. 4 is a section therethrough as seen on line 4-4, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a section as seen on line 55, Fig. 1.
In describing the invention I shall refer to the drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which 1 indicates'the cylindrical casing or housing mounted in the wall of a structure so that one end of the same communicates with the interior thereof while the other end communicates with the exterior. Extending diametrically across the casing or housing 1 at the ends thereof are the bars 2 the centers of which are provided with bearing boxes 3 for receiving the ends of the rotatable and longitudinal shaft 45 therein. Mounted at predetermined points on the shaft 4 in spaced relation to one another are a pair of fans 5 which are provided with a plurality of blades or vanes 6, the latter being twisted for obvious purposes, as clearly disclosed in the drawing.
Formed on or otherwise secured to each end of the cylindrical casing 1 is a peripheral and laterally extending flange 7 and hinged to the flanges 7 are the oppositely operating closures 8 and 9. A spring member 10 is arranged in connection with each of the hinges for said closures 8 and 9 so as to normally retain the latter over the open ends of the body or casing and I have provided a means whereby when one closure is disposed to its open position the other will likewise be so disposed.
The closure 8 may be said to be the one at the inner end of the housing or casing, that is the one disposed in the interior of the structure and engaged with the outer face thereof is a flexible connection 11 the or the like 12 whereby the same may be readily engaged when desired. Engaged with the inner face of the closure 8 adjacent its hinged end is an additional flexible connection 13 which is directed over a roller 14: at the adjacent end of the adjacent bar 2. This flexible connection is guided longitudinally along the inner face of the wall of the body or casing 1 and trained over an additional roller 15 at one end of the bar 2 adjacent the opposite end of the casing or housing 1. An arcuate projection 16 is pro vided on the hinged end of the closure 9 which depends below the hinge proper thereof and loosel connected with this projection is a link 1; with which the opposite end of said flexible connection 13 is engaged. As stated above, these closures 8 and 9 are normally held in their eflective closed positions over the ends of the body 1 by means of the spring 10 but it will be seen from the above description vof the construction of the connecting means between said closures that upon the opening of the closure 8 by drawing upon the flexible connection 11, a pull will be exerted upon the curved extension 16 at the hinged end of the closure 9, thus causing the latter to be disposed tojits open position. Under normal conditions, these closures 8 and 9 are disposed to their closed positions over the ends of said body 1 so that dust, dirt and all extraneous matter'will be excluded from the body 1 and from the interior of the structure but upon the opening of the closure 8, as stated above, the closure 9 will be also opened and the foul air permitted to pass from the structure as will be readily understood.
From the above description of the con- J struction'of my improved device the operation thereof and the manner of applying the same to use will be readily understood, and it will be seen that l'have provided a device which is simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be very efiicient and useful in operation. V t d While I have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, it s obvious that various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A ventilator of the character described comprising a tubular casing, a bar at each extremity of said casing coincident with the verticalaxis thereof, an outwardly opening closure hingedly connectedto each extremity of'said casing, spring means in'connection with said closure to retain the latter over the extremities of said casing, a flexible member connected at one end to one of said closures and extending longitudinally of said casing, means at the lower'extremities of said bars for cooperation with said member to guide the same, and a clip at the hinged end of the remaining closure for engagement with the free end of said member whereby said closures may be simultaneously opened substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A ventilator of the character described comprising a tubular casing, a bar, at each end of said casing coincident with the vertical axis thereof, an outwardly opening closure hingedly connected at each extremity of said casing, spring means in connec-e tion with said closures to normally retain the latter over'the extremities of said casing, a flexible member connected at one end to the inner surface of one of said closures and extendinglongitudinally of said casing, a
guide roller at the lower extremity of each of said bars over which said member is directed, a downwardly depending extension disposed contiguous to the hinged edge of the remaining closure and connected to the free end of said member whereby said closures may be-simultaneously operated sub-,
stantially as and for the purpose set forth.
