Be it known that I, OSCAR HOCHBERG', residing at St. Louis, Missouri, and being a citizen of the United States, have invented certain new andV useful Improvements in Car End Framing, of'which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and to use the same, reference being had .to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the preferred form of the invention, though it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the exact details of construction shown and described, as it is obvious that various modifications thereofywill occur to persons' skilled in the art.
The object of the invention is to providey an end framing capable of withstanding the severe wrenching to which car frames are subjected in service, especially the end frames of cars wherein provision must be made for doorways for the passage of freight or passengers.
The problem of properly bracing the ends of cars is not so great in cases where the required opening is not larger than that'usually found in passenger cars, but where freight of great bulk such as automobiles or other vehicles, machinery and the like are to be carried, door openings as large as the cnr end will permit are necessary, in which case the problem of bracing the car end becomes important.
It is the province of this invention to provide an end framing suitable not only for lthe purpose of resisting stresses induced4 by the surging and swaying of the car body, but also to the requirements of the particu- -lar type of car in which it isdesired to employ the invention.
Another and important object of this inwntion is to provide in the end frame o1'- ganization, an lupright member made up of complemcntal sections having the same en eral configuration and secured together, each ci said sections being provided on one edge thereof with a stepped portion adapted to recelve parts entering into the construction ofthe car. This arrangement enables the builder to form the column with a minimum expenditure of time and labor in assembling the parts with the consequent reduction in the cost of the completed structure.
As shown in the drawings, the outer section of the column is arranged with its stepped edge farthest from the car side thus providing a pocket and jamb for the door, while the inner section is reversed and placed with its stepped edge in a position toyreceive the corner nailing post securing the sheathing and lining of the car-wall together. It will be observed that the stepped portion of one section is secured to the body of the other, so that when assembled a stepped column of substantially box-section is obtained. v
In the drawings, Figure 1 shows the invention applied to an automobile car end with the doors arranged within the framing. The view at the left-hand side of Fig. 2 shows a horizontal section taken -on line 2-2 of Fig. 1 through the wooden end plate with enough of its end broken away to show the manner of connecting the upper end of the upright to the door lintel. The view at the right-hand side of thesame figure is a section taken horizontally on line 2L-2** of Fig. l through the upright at a point above the end sill showing the connection of the lower end of the upright to the end sill. Fig. 3 is a vertical section through one of the uprights taken on line 3.-3 of Fig. 1, showing both top and bottom connections to lintel and end sill respectively. Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line A-B of Fig. 2 showing the manner of connecting the upright, lintel, and side plate together on the `inside of the car. In several figures of the drawing, A indicates'a car with its end constructed' in accordance with the invention; B` and C arev the doors fitted within the framing; D indicates the end sill; 'E the vside plate; F the side sill; Gr and' H referto thel lining and sheathing respectively of the, car wall; and J indicates the uprights peculiar to the inventio Y Of libe sections making up the upright J, section 1 thereof forms the outside 'or sheathing of the end wall of the car and section 2 the inside or lining of said wall. These sections are made up of plates having a plurality of angular bends a-b along one edge thereof to form, in the outer wall section 1 of the column J, a pocket and jamb for the door and, in the inner Wall section 2 of the upright, a pocket for the rearwardly extend# ing 'nailing post 3 for securing the lining G and sheathing H of the car side. Carriage bolts 4 and 5 secure the nailing posts 3 which are of wood or other fibrous material to the portion 6 of section 2 of the upright. Additional bolts 7 pass through the body of the section 1 flanged portion 8 of section 2 and serve to further secure nailing post 3 to upright J. Flange 6 extending rearwardly from the Abody of section 1 servesas a pocket for the doors B or C and gives sufficient space for the accommodation of jamb strip 9 attached to flange 8 of section 1 and body of section 2.
The doorsswing on hinges 10 mounted on the bod of section 1 of the uprights J and when c osed occupy a position within and close the opening bounded by the end sill, D, the elbowed portion 6 of the outer section 1 of the uprights, and the end plate K.
The end sill D comprises the Z-bar 11, the reinforcing angle 12 arranged with its horizontal flange 121L flush with the top of flange 11a of the Z-bar, and the coverplate 13 connecting Z-bar 11 and reinforcing angle 12.

As shown in Fig. 8, the u per portions of the uprights are coped out or the reception ajo of the end plate member K of substantially Z section arranged' to lie between thepfup er ends of the upri ht sections 1 and 2.' he flanges 6 and y8 o the section 2 are cut away substantially inthe plane of the horizontal wehjof the end plate Z-bar K but thebody portion 2 of the section extends above the web of said Z-bar end plate for connection to the angle piece 18 secured to the web of the Z-bar. The flanges 6 and 8 of sectiol of the upright also terminate in the plane with those of section 2, while the body plate l1a of the section continues vupwardly forcennection with the upstanding flange 19 of the Z-bar end plate K. It will' be observed that the flanges 6 of the sections are coped out as' at 1b and 2b to receive the depending flange 20 of the end plate K. It will be noted that flan e 8 of section 1 lies in a plane on thef outside of the depending flange 20; this is The vertical fla ge 22 of the side plate angle E is cut away at the upright to clear extension 2 of the upright section 2 and the upstanding flange 18a of connection 18; inside corner band 21 connects the side plate and the end plate, the upper corner connection is further reinforced by the outside corner band 23 connecting both side and end plates.
There Vis one advantage in the peculiar construction of the uprights and that is'that the work entering into their construction may be done in the shops and machine riveted after which the complete member may be taken to the work on the track and assembled with the rest of the car frame members.
It will thus be seen that there has been produced a sectional upright having recesses in its opposite faces, and these recessed por- 'ing made up of a tions of theu'prigh't are formed by a plurality of angular bendsineach of the sections making up the post or upright.

1. A car end framing comprisin an end plate, an end sill, and stepped uprig ts, each of said uprights being made up of a plurality of similar sections provided with seats for the end plate.
2. A car end framing comprisin an end plate, an end sill, and stepped upri-g ts, each of said uprights being made up of a plurality of sections having the same general configuration and coped at their upper :ends to provide seats for the end plate.
3. A car end framing comprising an end plate, an end sill, and hollow steppeduprights, each of said uprights being madeup of a plurality of similar sections coped to receive the end plate. f
4. A carjend framing comprisin an end plate, an end sill, and a pair o hollow stepped uprights, each of .said uprights'beplurality of sections having the same general conti ration and coped to receive portions of t e end lplate, said coped sections combining to provide a seat for said end plate.

7. A car end framing comprising an end plate, an end. sill, and stepped uprights, each of said uprights being made up of a plurality of matched sections of the saine general'conguration and coped to receive the end plate and to provide a seat therefor.
8. A car end framing comprising an end plate, an end sill, and rights,'each of said uprights being made up of sections having the same general configuration, said sections being reversely arranged with respect to each other and coped to provide aseat for the end plate.

An end construction for cars comprising an end sill provided with a cover plate having a flanged intermediate and flat end portions, posts supported upon the flat end portions of the cover plate and a. threshold piece arranged along the -Hanged portion of the cover plate and extending between said posts.
19. An end construction for cars comprising an end sill, posts rising from the end sill :1nd provided each with an outer recess for the ziccolnmodation of a nailing post, and an inner recess providing a door jamb andjamb strip securing means.
