STEERING-GEAR FOE TOY VEHICLES.
Application filed April 17, 1914.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MARTIN V. B. Evas- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Bergen, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Steering-Gear for Toy Vehicles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to steering gears for toy vehicles and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide a steering gear of the character indicated which is of simple and durable structure and which may be easily and quickly manipulated for steering the vehicle to which it is applied.
.In the accompanying drawing :Figure 1 is a perspective View of the steering gear. Fig. 2 is a top plan View of a portion of the same.
As illustrated in the accompanying drawing 1 indicates a portion of the frame of the vehicle to which the steering gear is attached. Braces 2 depend from the frame portion 1 and are connected at their lower.
ends by means of rivets 3 with an axle 4. Spindles 5 are pivoted at their inner ends upon the rivets 3 and the pivoted portions of the said spindles are located between the adjacent sides of the axle i and the braces 2. The spindles 5 are provided with angularly disposed arms 6 to the rear ends of which is pivotally connected the ends of a rod 7. The forward supporting wheels of the vehicle (not shown) are adapted to be journaled upon the spindles 5 in the usual manner. A shaft 8 is ournaled at its lower end portion at the intermediate portion ofthe axle 4 and the upper end portion of the said shaft is journaled in the frame portion 1 of the vehicle. A hand wheel 9 is fixed to the upper end of the shaft 8 and an arm 10 is fixed to the lower end of the shaft 8 at Specification of Letters Eatent.
Patented May 25, 1915.
Serial No. 832,609.
a point below the axle at and the rear end of the arm 10 is pivotally connected with the intermediate portion of the rod 7 as best illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawing.
From the above description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing it will be seen that the frame portion 1 of the vehicle is supported by means of the braces 2 at the end portions of the axle 4 and an operator may use the hand wheel 9 for turning the shaft 8 whereby the arm 10 may be swung and the rod 7 may be moved longitudinally. As the rod 7 moves longitudinally the arms 6 are swung whereby the spindles 5 are turned upon the pivots or rivets 3 and thus the wheels which are journaled upon the spindles are steered or guided. There fore it will be seen that a steering gear of simple and durable structure is provided and the gear is especially adapted to be used upon toy or similar vehicles.
Having described the invention what is claimed is In combination with a vehicle frame, braces depending therefrom, an axle located below the lower ends of the braces, rivets connecting the axle with the braces, spindles pivoted upon the rivets and having inner end portions located between the axle and the braces, said spindles having rearwardly disposed arms, a single rod pivotally connected at its ends with the said arms, a shaft journaled in the frame, a wheel carried at the upper portion of the shaft, an arm carried at the lower portion of the shaft and located below the axle the last mentioned arm being pivotally connected with the said rod at a point between the ends thereof.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MARTIN V. B. EVESSON.
