Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MAURICE M. NEAMES, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Vacherie, in the parish of St. James and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Leak- Stops for Levees, Dikes, &c., of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improvement in protecting covers for levees, dikes, etc., in the nature of a revetment, designed especially for preventing breaks or crcvasses because of the leakage of water through craw-fish and musk-rat holes or because of other defects in the structure; and the invention consists in certain novel constructions and combination and arrangement-s of parts as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawing Figure l is a perspective view, illustrating my protecting cover as in use. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view illustrating the cover with some of the pockets closed and others opened to expose the weighting contents.
By my invention, I seek to rapidly and effectively close or stop the passage or leak-- age of water through levees, dikes, etc., and
I accomplish this by means of a cover A,
which may preferably be a strong, padded, flexible mattress as shown, although a tarpaulin or canvas or other similar sheet may be employed when desired. The cover A has at its edge or edges a flap-like portion or extension A which may be folded back over the body of the cover and be fastened thereto by suitable fastenings, such as buttons or clasps or snap hooks, all of which are shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing. This flap or extension A, when folded over the body of the cover, forms a pocket to receive sand, stones or other weight which will be retained in the pocket and will cause the flexible covering to sink and will assist in retaining the said cover in position, when placed over the hole or other defect in the levee or dike. The edges of the protecting cover are preferably roped all around as shown at A to furnish the desired strength, and three or more rope lines B are attached to and lead out from each end of the flexible cover usually fifty or more feet and by which ropes, the flexible cover can be drawn back and forth or sidewise until adjusted to the desired position over the opening or defeet in the levee or dike which it is desired to protect. The cover being flexible, will fit over any uneven surfaces and effectively seal the same and if desired, sacks of loose earth be placed on the cover, as may be found necessary or desirable to make the same absolutely water-tight and to secure it in position. The diminution, if not the immediate stoppage of the leakage through the levee or dike will indicate exactly when the flexible cover is in proper position and the cover may be placed in position without the aid of skilled mechanics.
In practice, one of the covers which can be carried from place to place by one or two men and effectively applied by seven or eight men, may be utilized to stop leaks through levees and dikes, at a minimum expenditure of time and money.
Ordinarily the cover may be made twenty by thirty feet square but the dimensions may be varied to suit the special conditions for which the cover is designed.
In the specific construction shown, the edge extension or flap A overlies an underlying fiap A secured to the body portion and projecting in the opposite direction from the flap A. This underlying flap may be regarded as a part of the body portion and in the specific construction shown, the flap or extension is fastened to this underlying flap.
In fastening the flap or extension to the underlying flap, I may employ a button or buttons, two of which are indicated at the left in Fig. 2, or buckles or snap hooks may be employed, both such forms being shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing.
The end flap A it will be noticed, extends down from above the pocket and is returned on its underside as shown in Fig. 2, while as shown in the same figure, the flap or extension A projects upwardly from the casing for the rope A I claim:
1. A protecting cover for levees, dikes and the like, composed of a flexible cover having an. edge extension or flap folded back over the body of the cover, and fastenings for securing said extension or flap detachably to the body of the cover, the said flap or extension forming a pocket for the reception of weighting material, and ropes leading from the flexible cover and adapted to facilitate the manipulation thereof, substantially as set forth.
2. A protecting cover for levees, dikes and the like, composed of a flexible cover having an edge flap or extension returned over and secured to the body of the cover and adapted to form a pocket for the reception of Weighting material, substantially as set forth.

A protecting cover for levees, dikes and the like, composed of a flexible cover having an edge extension or flap folded back over the body of the cover and an underlying flap projecting in a reverse direction from said extension below the same, and fastenings securing said underlying flap to the extension flap, substantially as set forth.
