Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALPHA JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nokomis, in the county of Montgomery and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Covers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to covers for the boxes or bodies of wagons and other similar receptacles; and it consists of a foldable cover formed of hinged plates as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a cover constructed according to this invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-section through the cover, taken on the line w-w in Fig. 1, and showing the box. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the cover, showing its plates spread out.
' Fig. 4 is a plan view of the cover when folded.
The wagon box 2, or other similar receptacle, is of rectangular shape, and is provided with a removable and foldable cover, according to this invention. This cover has two top plates 3 arranged side by side and provided with hinges 4 at their adjacent edges. Lugs or stop plates 5 are secured near the outer edges of the two plates, and are arranged to bear against the sides of the box with the outer side portions of the plates resting on the top of the sides of the box. Both top plates are thus supported in an inclined position with their hinged edges raised above the top of the box at its middle part.
Two pairs of end plates 6 and 7 are provided, and these end plates are connected to the ends of the top plates 3 by hinges 8.
The end plates 6 and 7 of each pair are arranged right and left, and are both triangular in form, so that their bottom edges are in line with each other and free to rest on the ends of the box. Pins 10 are inserted through holes in the box sides and in the lugs 5 to prevent the cover from sliding endwise, but any other approved catch or fastening devices may be used to prevent the cover from sliding, or the cover may be held in position by its own weight.
Any approved form of hinges can be used which will permit the plates to be folded, and the cover is made of any approved material, but plates of sheet metal are preferred.
When the cover is not required in use the top plates are folded against each other, as shown in Fig. 4:, and the end plates are folded against the top plates. folded the cover can be carried about conveniently, and can be spread out and placed over the wagon box-whenever its contents require the protection of a cover.
What I claim is:
A foldable wagon top, comprising two hinged top plates provided with means for engaging with the sides of the wagon box, triangular end plates arranged right and left in pairs, and hinges pivoting the long sides of the end plates to the ends of the top plates and permitting the end plates to be folded flat against the top plates and to be arranged vertically over the ends of the wagon box.
