Description

W. R. UHLEMANN.
ms GRIP FOR EYEGLASSES.
' APPLICATION FILED HD1125, 1909.
Patented Aug. 20, 1912.
COLUMBIA PLANOGRAPH COuWASHINGTON, D. C.
onrrn STATES NOSE-GRIP FOR EYEGLASSES.
Application filed June 5, 1909.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM R.-UHLE- MANN, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nose-Grips for Eyeglasses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of eyeglasses in which the holding means comprises a pair of opposed resiliently held grip members adapted for holding engagement with the nose of the wearer. And the present invention has for its object to provide a simple and efficient detachable connection between the nose grip member and its carrying arm of eyeglass mountings, all as will hereinafter more fully appear.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1, is an elevation of the blank or stamping from which the present grip member is formed. Figs. 2 and 3, are perspective views illustrating progressive steps in the formation of the grip member. Fig. 4, is a perspective view of the grip member and carrying arm in a detached condition, and illustrating the fastening means between the parts. Fig. 5, is a sectional elevation illustrating the parts connected together by the aforesaid fastening means.
Similar numerals of reference indicate like parts-in the several views.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the nose grip piece or member adapted for attachment to the connecting bridge of a pair of eyeglasses in any ordinary manner but preferably bv the detachable connection hereinafter described.
In the construction shown each nose grip member will comprise a main middle portion each half of which is curved in a reverse direction to the other, and end portions formed into semi-circular return bends 2, the free ends of which are of a lobular form and are arranged in separated relation to the opposite sides of the main portion as shown. The described form of grip member while presenting a neat and symmetrical Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug, 20, 1912.
Serial No. 500,413.
appearance, is capable of a very extended range of adjustments on the part of the optician in fitting a particular form or contour of the wearers nose, in that said semicircular return bends 2, can be readily displaced in an inward or outward direction with relation to the plane of the central body portion to attain the required fit to the nose of the wearer. An equally valuable feature in the described form of grip member consists in the great extent of free holding edge which is provided, and upon which the holding effect of the grip member is based. The said grip members may have the ordinary flat plate formation shown in the drawings, or may be of any other ordinary formation usual to nose grips, and as the judgment of the optician may direct.
3 is a tongue connected at the midlength of the central body portion of the grip member l, and adapted to form a part of the attaching means for said grip member to its carrying arm or lever 4. In the present construction said tongue is bent upon itself to form two parallel portions, one of which portions 5 is free and resilient for the purpose hereinafter indicated, and 6 is a holding notch formed in said tongue 3, and preferably in the portion 5 as shown.
7 are orificed flanges formed on the end of the carrying lever 4, with the orifices in said flanges adapted to receive the two parallel portions of the tongue 3, aforesaid, in forming a connection bet-ween the nose grip member and carrying lever, and with the notch 6 aforesaid adapted to engage beneath a side margin of one of said orifices to lock the parts in an engaged condition.
Having thus fully described my said invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of a nose grip member having an attaching tongue bent upon itself to provide parallel portions, one of which is provided with an engaging means, and a grip carrying lever formed with orificed flanges adapted for engagement wit-h said tongue, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of a nose grip mem- Signed at Chicago, Illinois, this 27th day ber having an attaching tongue bent upon of May 1909.
itself to provide parallel portions, one of which is provided with an engaging notch, WILLIAM UHLEMANN' and a grip carrying lever formed with ori- Witnesses: ficed flanges adapted for engagement with R. H. UHLEMANN,
said tongue, substantially as set forth. H. B. LANE.
