COMBINED STEP-LADDER. AND IRONING-BOARD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 20, 1912.
Application filed February 14, 1912. Serial No. 677,475.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CATHERINE O. ORWIG,
a citizen of the United States, residing at improvements in combined step ladders and ironing tables and my object is to provide a device of this character which is readily adapted for use in either capacity and which may be compactly folded for storage pur- Q swung Vertically thereof, asshown in Fig. 3
poses.
A further object of the invention resides in providing a board which is slidably disposed on the supporting means for the ladder and a still further object resides in providing a folding support for the board whereby said board and folding support may be readily disposed between and secured to the supporting means for the lad-- der to be entirely out of use.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a device which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and one which is very eflicient and useful in operation.
With these and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out'in the specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my device set up for use as an ironing table; Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view thereof; Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the device set up for use as a step ladder and showing the ironing table attachment folded in its inoperative position; Fig. 4 is a vertical section as seen on line 41 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 is a section as seen on line 5-5 of Fig. 2.
In carrying out my invention, I shall refer to the drawings, in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which 1 indicates a ladder comprising side rails 2 between which are secured thestep pieces 3, said ladder being adapted for upright support by means of the prop 4.. pivotally carried on a round 5. This round 5 is held between the upper ends of the side pieces 2 and the outward swinging -movement. of said prop is limited by means of a back piece 6 secured to the rear edges of said side pieces 'at their upper ends.
The side rails of the prop 4 for the ladder, are held together by means of alower round 7 and an intermediate round 8, and a board 9 is carried on said round 8 by being provided on its under face with the spaced guide rails or barslO through which extends said round 8. This board 9 is, therefore, slidably carried on the supporting means for the ladder, so that the same may be or projected therefrom, as shown in Fig. 1, and I have provided a supporting means for the board when disposed in its horizontal and projected position.
The lower round 7 of the prop 4 has pivotally mounted thereon the bars 11 which are ofany suitable length-and held togetherat their opposite ends by means of an additional round 12, while said latter round has pivotally mounted thereon an additional frame 13 comprising a pair of side rails secured at their outer ends by means of a cross bar 14 and held together adjacent the inner end by means of a round 15. The bars 11 forming a frame in themselves are adapted to rest on the floor while the frame 13 is adapted to extend vertically thereof to receive on the upper crossbar 14, the under face of the board 9 adjacent its outer end and in order to support the frame 13 in its vertical position, I provide a pair of bracing arms 16 on the round 15. These bracing arms are pivotally mounted on saidround 15 and the free ends of the same are provided with notches 17 adapted to engage the additional. round 18 secured between the bars 11. From this construct-ion, it will be seen that when the board .9 has been disposed ,in its projected position and the supporting frame set up in the position shown in Fig. 1, said board will be supported in position for use. In order to prevent, however, the sliding movement of said board during the use thereof, the under face of the same adjacent its inner end is provided with a groove 19 which is adapted to receive the round 8, as shown in Fig. 5, when the board is properly disposed in its extended position.
From the above description, it will be seen that the device may be readily disposed top rail 14 of the rail 13. When so posiin position to be used as an ironing table at any time desired, but should it be found necessary to use the device as a ladder and undesirable to allow the device to remain standing as an ironing table, the table portion "of the device may be readily folded.-
This is accomplished by first raising the board 9 from the position shown in Fig. 1
and sliding the same on the round 8 until said board is disposed in a substantially vertical position on saidround, whereupon the bracing arms 16 are disengaged from the round 18and the bars 11 together with the frame 13 folded up against the board 9 and between the side rails of the prop. vThis position may be readily seen from the disclosure made in Fig. 8 of the drawings, and in order to retain the device in its folded position, the pivoted latch members or keepers 20 are provided on the prop 4 and adapted to be disposed in position to engage the tioned, the'table portion of the device will be securely held between the prop legs of the ladder and the device wholly used as aladder.
- From the foregoing, it will be seen that I I have provided a simple, inexpensive and efficient means for carrying out the objects of my invention, and while I have particularly described the elements most well adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is 7' obvious that various changes in form, procombination with a ladder and prop therefor comprising a pair of supporting standards, a transverse .bar connecting the same; of a board slidablyarranged on said transverse bar, a folding frame pivotally carried between said standards and adapted to support said board in its extended position, and pivoted latch members carried on said standards to lock said board and frame in folded position between the. standards.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing 2. In a device of the class described the combination with a ladder, and prop therefor comprising a pair of standards having a transverse bar' connecting the same, of a board slidably arranged thereon, a pair of bars pivotally mounted on the lower ends of said standards, frame pivotally connected to the opposite ends of said bars, a transverse rod connecting said bars, and bracin armsnpivotally carried onsaid frame anc adapted to engage the last referred to rod to support said frame in a vertical position, whereby said board may be in turn supported in itsextended position.
,3. In a device ofthe class described the combination with a ladder, and prop therefor comprising a pair of standards having a round connecting the same; ofa board provided with guide rails on the under face thereof through which said round extends, a folding supporting frame for the board pivotally carried between said standards, and means to lock said board and supporting frame in folded position between the standards, 1
4. In adevice of the class described, the combination with a ladder, a prop therefor comprising a pair of standards, a transverse bar connecting said standards; of a board, a pair of guide rails secured to the under face of said board and spaced therefrom, said guide rails receiving therein the transverse bar connecting the standards to pivotally andslidably mount said board between the standards, the under face of said board being provided adjacent its one end with a groove adapted to receive said transverse bar therein, a folding sup-porting frame pivotally carried between said standards at the lower ends thereof, and means to support one section of said foldingframe at right angles to the other section thereof, whereby one of said sections will be disposed in position to receive the outer portion of said board thereon.
, In testimony whereof Ihereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
