Description

C. B. JOHNSON.
PORTABLE FENCE. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA D ms, 1911.
m l m I; q mk n IIII 4 @mail il plum IIIIL Snom/woz arZesJo/mom @H 1111 ma 5 CHARLES B. JOHNSON, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
PORTABLE FENCE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patent-ee Aug. 6,1912.
Application filed February 6, 1911. Serial No. 606,681.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES B. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Portable Fences, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved portable fence made up of sections With means for coupling the sections together so that the fence can be erected either on straight or angular lines.
The invention is embodied in the construction herein shown and described and then particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a view mainly in elevation of a portion of fence according to the invention a portion of the post being broken out to show a modied coupling member for connection with a post or other stationary object. Fig. 2 is a plan view of a pair of the couplings ordinarily used between fence sections. Fig. 3 is an edge view with parts in section showing a coupling like that exhibited in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is an edge view showing how a pair of post connections can be used as a fence section coupling.
In the views, referring to Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, 5 designates the male head member consisting of a circular plate perforated at its middle for the passage of a bolt and provided with a series of four cylindrical pins 5a quadrantly spaced and equally distant from the center of the plate. The head 5 is provided with a shank 6 having lateral shoulders 6a and spurs 6". The female member of the coupling consists of a head portion 7 having a central perforation for the passage of a bolt and a series of eight holes 7a equally spaced apart and equally distant from the center of the head portion, the distance of the holes from the center being the same as that of the pins 5a or so that said pins can be inserted in the said holes. The shank of the female member of the coupling as shown in said views Figs. 1 to 3 is identical with the shank of the male member as respects the lateral projections or shoulders 6EL and spurs 6b. A pair of said male meinbers is connected to one end of a fence section and a pair of the said female members is connected at the other as seen in Fig.. 1.
Vertical panels 8 and 9 are driven into the spurs at the opposite sides of the shanks with one of the edges of each panel matching against the adjacent lug. The horizontal rails l0 are then inserted under and against the shank and secured with nails or screws as at 11.
The fence can be started from some fixed structure as for example a barn or house or at a post 12. In that case the male members are constructed at their head portions as before described but have their shanks made as screws as seen at 13. Such male members can also have a shoulder as at 14 to receive a wrench for turning it. The couplings with shanks used as screws can also be used in connecting fence sections in which case the screws can be turned into the ends of the horizontal rails of the sections as seen in Fig. 4L.
The male and female members are united firmly together by means of a bolt 15 passed through the central. perforations of both heads when lapped upon each other and a nut 16. v
With this construction the angle at which one fence section stands with reference to the next can be varied to several positions one being shown by broken lines Fig. 2. A fence thus constructed is also very strong, durable and cheaply constructed and its parts can be easily moved from one place to another. It will be very serviceable in erecting temporary closures or pens for cattle.
What I claim is:
1. In a fence composed of sections including a pair of separated vertical end panels, a coupling` for the sections comprising male and female members, one of which consists of a head portion having a plurality of approximately cylindrical pins arranged equally distant from the center of the head port-ion and a shank portion, and the other of which consists of a head portion having a plurality of concentric holes to' receive the pins of the other head portion and a shank portion, one of said shank portions provided with oppositely extending lateral pins to penetrate opposite faces of said panels, substantially as described.
2. In n fence composed of sections including a pair of separated veitieal end panels, a coupling member for the sections including 2L head portion and a shank portion provided with Oppositely extending lateral shoulders 6a to receive the edges of the vertical. end panels of d fence section and op- 10 positely extending lateral spurs 6b to penetrate opposite faces of said panels.
CHARLES B; JOHNSON. Titnesses W. A. GOURTRIGHT, BENJAMIN FINCKEL.
