Th all whom t't may conccrn': h
' lee it known that LHNRY R. rowm ofsmmford, in the county of Fairfield 'and State of Gonnecf' ticut, haveinvented a new andi'useful Guard-Lock;
and Ido herebyheclarezthat the following is a full' and exact description thereof, reference being hadto the` acoompanying drawings .and .to the lettersof reference marked thereon making a part of this specification. I i. i In cases wherel`` great. security is desired, as, for linstanc'e, in the doors of safe-depositfboxes, it is found desirable not to relyentirely upon the excellence of l'the locks on said doors;` and, therefore, 'i
' liThe objectof this invention is to add'greater secnrity by placing on' said doors, or even on the looks 'of the sainear, second lock, in such manner as will t interpose a' guard orshield-plate over the key-holes of said looks, so as to efliactually prevent any atteinpts of pieking through the key-hole. i The fence-key, tuntblenslideis, and spring are simi'iluar. to the' ordinary parts as employ'ed in the wellkhown Bramah lock, and,- thereforc, .need no special description here; but myvinv'ention more particularly relates to the arrangement of said parts in a case, D, incombinatiou with a `shield or gnard, A, and consists inzprotectingv the `key``-'hole, and, at: the'samc corresponding h HENRY'R-TOWNE', or STAMFORD, ccNNncTIcUT;
time, covering the scrcws which secure the guardlock in place, by means of the swinging shield-plate, i
and in the combination, with said shield-plate, of a tumbler, sliders, fence,.spring, key, and lock-case, all ashereinafter described.
The lock-case D may.l be made of cast-hrass or other suitable material, and is formed with arif upper plate, a, and lower plate, l), hollow cylindrical tenon,
E; and prcjection d.
Into the interior of the cylindricaltenon E is fitted the tumbler H, (around which are placed, in proper i channels, the sliders k,) the spring,r l, and the fence B. Between the plates a and l)V of the lock-case D is placed the guard or shield A., the inner part of said guard being so constrncted (see fig. 1)'as to fit over and encircle theV head of the tumbler H, and the outer end to project'from the side of the lock-case, as .shown .In applying this lock, the cylindrical tenon E of the .lock-case D is let ,into a mortise or opening previouslymade for that purpose, and the case D is then secured in position by means of the screws e e, which are inserted through the top-plate a and through the lower plate Z), in such mauner as will allow the headsof said screws to be countersnnk into the lower plate i b and'be fiush With its surface. 4
The lockbeing thus secul'edand in place near the key-hole it is desi'red to guard, 'the guard` or shield A may be iuoved by the hand directly over and covering the key-hole c of the lock, and, whenv in said position, the sliders lc, by the actionof the spring l, are inter posed between the tumbler H and the fence B, and
said guard or shield' is locked or held insaid position until it is released by the action of the key O on the' tumbler H.
. 'The inne:` part of the guard or shield A 4is formed i withtwo Wings, f', so that, when said guard or shield is locked inposition over the key-'hole c, said wings will interpose'bet'w'een the uppe'rplate a landv theV lower plate b of the lock-casel), andl thus cover the heads of the screws'e e, and prevent their being drawn from i the outside. h
Having thus described my inventio'n,
- Vhat I claim as new, and 'desire to secureb'y Let- 'ters Patent, isi 1.-Theshield-plate A,`protecting the key-hole,and,
'at` the same time, covering ithe'is'crews which secure the guard'lock in place, substantially as'described.4 i
2. In combination with' the above, the turnbler H,
sliders k, fence B, spring Z, key C, and lock-case D,
all constructed, arranged, and Operating substa'ntially as-herein'described. y
