To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, .Vrnnun THOMAS CHILDS, a citizen of the United States, re-
siding at Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cores for Manufacturing Pneumatic-Tire Shoes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in collapsible cores for manufacturing the outer-shoes 01": double-tube pneumatic tires, and the object thereof is to provide a collapsible core which may be quickly assembled or collapsed, the invention contemplating the provision of a plurality of segments,
which, when united, will form an annular core-body for imparting to the interior of the tire-shoe during the manufacture thereof, the proper shape to receive the inner in flat-able tube, the' invention more particularly residing in the means whereby the various segments constituting the body portion of the core, are temporarily united.
A furthervobject of the invention is to provide a device of the character described in which the various segments constituting the body portion of the core may be securely united together and further provided with means whereby they may be quickly assembled for use and collapsed for removal from the interior of the tire-shoe after vulcanization:
"With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arangcment of parts constituting the i veution to be here inafter spccilicall y described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part hereof wherein is-shown the preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hc eunto appended.

The opposite faces of the washers 11 from those which bear the annular ridgcs 12 are provided with cylindrical recesses 16 of 'suiiicicnt size to receive the head 15 and permit the seating of the same therein, the arrangement being such that when the head 15 of the bolt 14: is in alinement with the opening 18, thewasher is freely removable therefrom; but when the head 15 of the bolt 14 is given a one-quarter revolution, it seats on the floor of the recess 16 which surrounds the opening 13. Positioned on the opposite sides of the united lugs 8 is a clamping washer 18 provided with an annular ridge 19 adapted to seat in an annular groove 20 formed in the opposite faces of the combined lugs 8. The washers 18 are provided with cylindrical openings 21- to receive the bolts 14 which have threaded ends for clamping nuts 22, The semi-circular grooves 9 which form the openings through which the stem portions of the bolts 1 1 are passed, are-of suflicient size to permit the passage therethrough of the head 15 of each bolt.
p The operation of assembling a ring-core constructed in'accordance with this invention, is as follows: The segment-shapedv members are asse1nbled,-as shown in Fig. 1,
with the lugs 8 in abutting relation so that the semi-circular grooves 9 will register with each other, after which the clamping, washers 11 and 18 are seated in the annular grooves 10 and 20 and the bolts 14 are passed through the openings in the washers and the latter are clamped securely in position in their re spective g1 coves by means of the nuts 22, in
. doing which the heads 15 of the bolts 14 are positioned to seat on the floors 17 of the recesses 16 in the washers 11. When it is desired to collapse the core the nuts 22 are released sufficiently to permit the heads 15 of the bolts to be given a quarter'of a revolution to bring the heads into alinement with the openings 13, after which the bolts may be drawn through their respective washers 11, permitting the various segment-shaped members of the core to be separated. The annular grooves 10 and 20 are arranged on opposite sides of the lugs 8 and are so shaped that the projecting ridges 12 and 19 of the oppositely-disposed clamping washers will bear against the inclined side walls thereof, as to exert a clamping action for drawing the abutting lugs them this position.

I claim: 1. In a collapsible core for the manufacture of tires, the combination of a series of I segmental shaped sections adapted to be assembled into a circular core, the ends of the sections abutting against each other and being formed with corresponding flanges.

bolt members connecting the washer members extending through the openings formed by the before mentioned registering notches.
2. In a collapsible core .for the manufacture of tires, the combination of a series of segmental shaped sections provided upon the concave sides thereof with inwardly extending flanges, the said sections being adapted to be assembled into an annular core'and the ends of the flanges then abut ting against each other to provide an annular flange projecting inwardly from the core, the abutting ends of the said flanges being formed with registering notches and also with registering semicircular grooves concentric with the notches, bolt members extending through the openings formed by the registering notches, and washer members applied to the bolt members upon opposite sides of the flanges, the said washer members being formed with annular flanges adapted to engage the registering semi-circular grooves to lock the core sections together.
