To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, RALPH K. MAKER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the city of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pins, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to that class of pins commonly known as cuff or beauty pins, the same being more especially adapted to be made of the more precious metals, such as gold or silver, and of the so-called one-piece construction, in which both the joint and catch members are formed integral with the body of the pin.

The object of the invention is to provide a pin stem having an elongated thin flat-sided head pivotally mounted between the joint ears of the pin, the lower edge of the head being recessed or notched to receive a stop pin which passes laterally through the shell and through said recess to be engaged by its walls, thereby providing both a front and a back stop for the stem' by the use of but a single pin.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.

Of the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is an enlarged side elevation of a pin with the body partly broken away to better illustrate my invention. Fig. 2- is an enlarged detail, partly in perspective, of a pinstem made after my improved construction.

Fig. 3 is a section on line 33 of Fig. 1.

Referring to the drawings, 10 designates the body of the pin which is more particularly adapted to be struck up complete from sheet met-a1, preferably of the more precious metals such as gold and silver, the same being designed to be made of the so-called one-piece construction in which the catch member 11 and joint ears 12-12 are all formed integral with the body portion.

An essential feature of my invention is the provision of a pin-stem 13 having a thin elongated head 14 with flattened sides, said head being pierced at 15 to receive the pivot pin 16 and also notched or recessed as at Specification of Letters Patent.

17 on its lower edge, said notch being preferably of an inverted V-shape forming practically two downwardly extending legs 2122.

Another feature of the invention is the provision of a stop pin 18 which is adapted to pass through the walls of the shell near where the joint ears extend outward from the body portion, said pin also extending through the notched portion 17 between the legs 2l-22 of the pin stem whereby when the stem is raised the required distance the rear wall 19 of the notch or leg 22 will engage this stop pin to limit the upward motion of the stem, and when brought downward the wall 20 of this notch or leg 21 will engage the stop pin on the opposite side and form a fulcrum to limit the downward motion of the pin-stem to provide the necessary tension when the point of the stem enters the catch member in the opposite end of the pin body. This stop pin, after being inserted, is preferably headed over or riveted by being pinched by a pair of pliers.

In making solid gold pins of this character it is necessary that all portions of the pin should be of the same material, and itis also very desirable that the pin may be constructed of very light and thin material and at the same time possess the required strength in all its parts. It is therefore found advantageous to provide a pin-stem with a thin flattened head with all of the surplus stock removed, the downwardly projecting portion being recessed to receive the stop pin 18, which single pin cooperating with the legs 21 and 22 of the pin-stem performs the double function of forming both a front stop and a back stop for the pinstem.

The device is extremely simple and inexpensive in construction and effective in its operation.

By the word shell in the specification and claim it is understood that I include both the body portion and also the joint ears which are integrally connected thereto.
