CAR-UNDERFRAME.
Serial No. 658,815.
To all whom z' may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES T. VVEsr- LAKE and CHARLES F. FREDE, citizens of the. United States, residing at St. Louis, Missouri, have invented a certainy new and useful Improvement in Car-Underframes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is plan view of an underframe of our improved construction. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken approximately on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken approximately on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
This invention relates generally to car underframes and more particularly to a platform casting intended particularly for use on that type of passenger cars which are provided with observation ends, although the platform with slight modifications can be advantageously used on various types of passenger cars.
Briefly our invention consists in combining in a single casting a double body bolster, a platform frame and abuiiing sill, although, if desired, the bufling sill can be cast or formed separate from 4the platform and frame and connected thereto by bolts, rivets or in any suitable manner.
The object of our invention is to provide a strong, durable one piece cast structure which can be readily combined with the modern types of car bodies and which when combined with a car body materially strengthens the ends thereof, and providing a strong substantial underframe for the superstructure of the observation ends of the car.
To the above purposes our invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Referring by numerals' to the accompanying drawings: 1 designates the center beam or the member ofthe double body. bolster., and formed integral with the ends thereof are transversely disposed bolster members 2 the ends of which are formed integral with longitudinally disposed side sills or rails 3. Formed integral with the rear end of the center member 1 is an extension 4; to
which the center sill or girder of the car underframe is attached. Formed integral with the forward end of the center member 1 is a forwardly extending sill or center member 5, and formed integral therewith adjacent the outer one of the bolster members 2 are transversely disposed members 6 which form the end sill of the underframe.
The outer ends of this end sill are formed integral withextensions 7 of the side sills 3. The end sill 6 is preferably Z-shaped in cross section with its bottom flange 6a projecting toward the end of the car, to serve as a base and support for the end posts of the car body. (See dotted lines Fig. 1.) Formed integral with the outer end of the sill 5 are transversely disposed members S which form a vestibule platform supporting sill, and the ends of this last mentioned sill are formed integral with the forward ends of the extensions 7 of theside sills. Formed integral with the outer end of the sill 5 is an extension 9 which forms the main body portion of the base or frame for the exposed portion of the platform, and formed integral with the outer end of this extension 9 is a transversely disposed beam 10 which is preferably L-shaped in cross section and to which is fixed in any suitable manner the buifing sillll. In some instances it may be found desirable to cast the buliing sill integral with' the extension 9. Formed integral with the beam or member 10 and with the sill 8 and end sill 6 is a series of longitudinally disposed beams 11a the tops of all of which occupy the same horizontal plane and serve as floor beams to which the metal plates forming the floor of the car are riveted, and corresponding beams 11b extend between and are formed integral with the end sill 6 and vestibule platform supporting sill 8. Pockets 12 are formed at the points 'where-the sill 5 joins the end sill 6 and these pockets receive the lower ends of I-beam end posts 13. 14 designates end posts which are preferably Z-shaped in cross section and these posts are arranged between the posts 13 and side sills 3 with their lower ends restingupon the bottom flanges Gaof the end sill. The lower ends of all of the end postsl are rigidly fixed to the end sill by means of rivets or in any suit-able manner. V
Where a car body is combined with an underframe of our improved construction Patented June 25, 1912.r
the inelosed portion of the car body extends only to the end sill 6 and all of that portion of the underframe from said endl sill to the extreme limits of the buing sill 1l is used as an observation platform.
Our improved construction is very strong and rigid, is comparatively light in weight, materially strengthens the end portions of the car body and efiectually resists service strains and stresses.
It will be readily understood that minor changes in the size, form and construction of the various parts of our improved car underframe can be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the spirit of our invention, the scope of which is set forth in the appended claims.
