COLUMBIA PLANunn/um FFICE.
OLE SUNDE AND OSCAR RYAN, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.
BOX-COVER FASTENER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, OLE SUNDE and Oscar: RYAN, citizens of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box-Cover Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to boxes, crates, and similar articles; and its object is the provision of improved means whereby the cover of such articles may be removably secured in place.
The invention consists in the novel construction and adaptation of cover fastening devices as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box with our invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through 2-2 of Fig. 1. Figs. 3 and 1- are perspective views of the complementary members of a box fastener shown detached.
The reference numeral 5 designates a box or crate consisting of a body having front, back, side and bottom walls which are fixedly secured together by nails, or otherwise. To the rear end of the top of said body is fixedly secured a transversely arranged strip 6.
The top or cover 7 is provided at its under side and near each end with a cleat 8 which extends beyond the rear end of the cover to engage against the under side of the strip 6.
Adjacentto each of the upper corners of the front wall 9 of the box is a plate 10 which is fixedly secured by screws 11 and 12. Pivoted upon the screw 11 of each of said plates is an angle-plate comprised of a vertical limb 13 and a limb 14 which extends rectangularly thereto and is adapted to engage over the front edge of the cover 7 as illustrated in Fig. 2 and at the right hand Specification of Letters Patent.

side of Fig. 1. Provided in the limb 13 of an angle plate is an aperture 15 to accommodate a forwardly projecting lug 16 provided in the complementary plate 10. As thus constructed and arranged, the angle plates are employed to engage over the boxtop 7 and cooperate with the cleats 8 which engage under the fixed strip 6 to hold the top in place.
The lugs 16 engaging in the apertures 15 of the angle-plates to prevent any lateral swinging of the latter about the pivotal sup-- ports 11 therefor and in order to effect such movements, the angle plates must first be either sprung forwardly to withdraw the angle plates from their engagement with the lugs or the pivotal screws 11 sutliciently retracted to allow of such disengagement. When thus disengaged, the angle plates are both moved to occupy positions such as represented at the left hand side of Fig. 1. The cover may then be tilted upwardly at the front and then moved forwardly to withdraw the cleats 8 from the strip 6 in the removal of the cover.
\Vhat we claim, is-
A box cover fastener comprising a plate secured at spaced points through the plate to a box to remain in fixed position and provided at its upper end with a forwardlyprojeeting protuberance, an angle plate pivotally-connected with the first'named plate and provided with a recess in one limb to receive said protuberance, the other limb of said plate adapted to engage over the box cover.
Signed at Seattle, Wash, this 12th day of Feb, 1912.
