TROLLEY-WHEEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 11, 1912.
Application filed April 22, 1911. Serial No. 622,645.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST U. DOWN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Bowling Green, in the county of food and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Trolley-Wheel; and I do hereby declare the following tobe a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification;
My invention relates to trolley-wheels, and has for its object to improve the construction of trolley-wheels shown and described in my former United States application Serial No. 600,850 filed January 4, 1911, whereby to reduce to a minimum the expense of repair due to the replacing of worn parts, and to enhance the practicability, efficiency and commercial value of wheels of this character.
The invention is fully described in the following specification, and while, in its broader aspect, it is capable of embodiment in numerous forms, a preferred embodiment thereof is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figures 1 and 2 are opposite side views of a trolley-wheel embodying the invention, with an end of the hub bushing in the former in section. Fig. 3 is a central crosssection thereof, and Figs. 4:, 5, 6, 7 and 8 are different details of the hub parts thereof.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates therim portion of the wheel, which is provided with the usual peripheral trolley groove 2. On the inner side of the rim 1 slightly to one side of its center is formed an inwardly projecting annular flange 3 against which the radially-projecting annular flange 4 on the periphery of the oil magazine 5 is adapted to laterally bear. The flanges 3 and 4 are rigidly secured together in any suitable manner, as by rivets 6, which are shown as projecting through thickened portions 7 of the respective flanges.
The magazine 5 comprises a hollow circular member which is of suitable size for the portion thereof at one side of the flange 4 to fit snugly within the rim flange 3, while i in width'it is preferably less than the width of the rim 1, as shown in Fig. 3. Oil is admitted to the interior of the magazine through an opening in the periphery thereof and this is closed by a plug 8. The side walls of the magazine are each provided with axial openings 9 to permit the threading of a hub sleeve 10 therethrough, the walls of such opening, being preferably broadened and threadedrfor such purpose.
The sleeve 10 has one end annularlyv flanged, asat 11, to abut against one side of the magazine and limit its movement there'- in, and is of suitable length for its other end to project beyond the opposite side of the magazine to receive a nut 12, which corresponds to the flange 11' and serves to lock the sleeve in position within the magazine. The central portion of the sleeve 10'is reduced,,as at 13, to prevent a continuation of the sleeve threads throughout the length thereof, and such portion is provided with one or more apertures 14 for the passage of oil to the interior of the sleeve from the magazine reservoir. p i
While the sleeve 10 may serve as the shaft bearing for the wheel, it is preferable to provide the same with a bushing which can be easily and quickly removed when worn and a new one substituted therefor. This bushing preferably comprises the two substantially duplicate parts or halves 15, which fit snugly within the sleeve 10 with their inner ends in abutment and their outer ends annularly flanged without the ends of the sleeve, as shown at 16, to prevent contact of the sleeve ends with the harp arms. Ribs 17 are preferably provided externally on the body portions of the bushing parts longitudinally thereof to provide oil circulating,
passages between the sleeve 10 and bushing. Apertures 18 are provided through the bushing parts from alternate ones of such passages for the passage of oil to the interior thereof, as is apparent.
I wish it understood that my invention is not limited to any specific construction or arrangement of the parts except in so far as such limitations are specified in the claims. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is, 4

a multiple part bushing fitted within said sleeve and having its ends flanged for embracing the ends of the sleeve, said sleeve and bushing having openings therethrough for the passage of oil from the magazine to the interior of the bushing.
2. A trolley-wheel, comprising a rim portion, an oil magazine mounted within and carrying an axial opening.therethrough, a hub-sleeve projected through and mounted in said opening and having apertures therethrough, and a bushing fitted within the sleeve and having ribs arranged around its circumference for spacing the bushing body from the sleeve to provide oil passages, said bushing having apertures from said passages to the interior thereof.
8. A trolley-wheel, comprising a rim portion, an oil magazine mounted within and carrying said rim portion, said magazine having an axial opening therethrough, a hub sleeve threaded through said opening and having means at its ends for preventing longitudinal' movements of the sleeve within the magazine, and a two-part bushing fitted within the sleeve with its outer ends annularly flanged and bearing againstthe sleeve ends, said bushing having its body formed with external ribs, which provide oil passages between the sleeve and bushing, and said sleeve and bushing having apertures therethrough which cooperate with said spaces to open communication between the magazine and the interior of the bushing.
