To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. Posr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Estherville, in the county of Emmet and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ire-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in wire fasteners and more particularly to a device for securing fence wires to a post, and my object is to provide a device of this character provided with means for removably locking the wire to the post.
A further object of the invention resides in providing a device. which may be permanently mounted in the post and is provided with such a locking means as will allow the wire to be removed therefrom at any time without removing the fastener itself.
Still another object of the invention resides in providing a device which is extremely simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and one which will be very efficient and useful in Opera tion. I
With these and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the device applied to use on a post. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the fastener as seen from the side opposite that seen in Fig. 1, and, Fig. 3 is a perspect-ive view of the looking member of the device removed.
In carrying out my invention, I shall refer to the drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which- 1 indicates the body portion of my improved fastener, which body portion is elongated and tapered to a point at one end thereof, the opposite end of said body portion being convexed, and the tapering portion of the body 1 has the edges thereof provided with the notches or the like 2, whereby when the same is driven into a post 3, the same will be securely held therein and prevented from ready removal, This member 1 is formed of a flat piece of metal and provided with a substantially J-shaped slot 4 therein, that port-ion of the slot forming the lower portion of the 'J, terminating at the upper edge of the member 1 adjacent the enlarged end thereof. That portion of the slot 4: which forms the shank or stem of the J, extends longitudinally of the member 1 for a short distance thereof, and at the termination of the same, a laterally extending lug or flange!) is provided on the body member.
Botatably mounted on a pivot 6 which is disposed concentric with the convexed edges of the member 1, is a circular disk 7, the periphery of which is provided with a notch or cavity 8, the one wall of which is of camlike formation, as shown at 9, while the opposite wall of the same has formed thereon, a laterally extending tongue or the like 10. This laterally extending tongue 10 forms a handle or finger piece for the rotatable disk 7 and when said disk is disposed so that the notch 8 therein is in alinement with the outer curved portion of the J-shaped slot 4,

When said 7 disk is turned in one direction, however, the wire which is disposed in the alining notch and outer portion of the slot, will be forced into the opposite end of the slot 4: and will be llpcked therein by a further turning of the dis i In practice, the member 1 is driven into the post, whether the same be of wood or plastic material, it being appreciated that the notches in the shank thereof will retain the same securely therein, whereupon the disk 7 may be rotated until the notch 8 therein alines with the outer curved portion of the slot 4 to allow a wire to be positioned therein. By grasping the laterally extending tongue portion 10, the disk 7 may be rotated, and with the rotation of the disk the wire will be caused to slide toward the opposite end of the slot 4 by contact with the wall 9 of the notch, and upon a further rotation of the disk 7, the notch 8 will be disposed out of alinement with any portion of the slot 4 and the wire locked in the latter, as shown in Fig. 1. Itwill be appreciated that the cam-like formation of the wall 9 in the notch will allow the wire to be readily relieved therefrom as the disk is further rotated, and after being locked in the one end of the slot 4, said wire will have a bearing upon the laterally extending 5 also forms a limit to which the member 1 may be driven within the post. When it is desired to remove the wires from their engagement with the member 1, it will be seenthat it is not necessary to remove the mem ber 1 from the post, but by merely rotating the disk 7 in the opposite direction, the wire within the slot 4 will be again received in the notch 8 of said disk, and when said disk is rotated until the notch again alines wit-h the outer curved portion of the slot 4, said wire may be removed from engagement therewith.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that I have provided an improved device for securing fence wires to a post, which device permits the ready removal of the wires without removing the fastening means from the post. It will further be seen that I have provided a means on the device for forming a bearing surface or the like for the wire after the same is locked in position, which means also forms a limit to which the device proper may be inserted within the post. It will still further be seen that the device is one which is extremely simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and one which will be very efficient and useful in operation.
While I have particularly described the elements most well adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A device for securing wires to a post,
may be rotated, and an additional flange 7 formed on the body member adjacent the inner end of the slot to form a bearing surface for the wires when locked in position therein.
2. A device of the class described, comprising a body member adapted to be applied to a stationary member, said body member being provided with a curved slot, one end of which terminates in the edge of said body member, a disk rotatably mounted on said body member immediately. adjacent the slot therein, said disk'being provided with a notch adapted to aline with portions of the slot in various positions of the disk and said notch having one wall thereof camshaped, a flange formed integral with the opposite wall of said notch to rotate said disk, and an additional flange formed on said body member at the inner end of said slot to provide a bearing surface for the wire when the latter is looked to the body member.
