Letters Patent No. 102,859, dated May 10, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN FARM-GATES.
The Schedule referred'to n these Letters Patent an'makng part of the same Be it known` that4 I, HOWARD PIPER, of Haskins, in the county of Wood and State of Ohio, have invented a new and improved Farm-Gate; and I do hereby declare that the following sfa full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make. and use the same, referencebeing Vhad to 'the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification. 3
. This invention relates to improvements'in thatclass of gates which are arranged to slide back and forth inVV opening and closing, and consists in arranging the post' ,on which thegateslides so that it may be raised up, to admit of sliding the gate above the sno'w,or for other purposcs. i
Figure l is a side elevation; `Figui-'e 2,1m transverse 'sectional elevation, as' seen in looking toward the left; and
' Figure 3 4.is anotherjransverse section, as seen looki ing toward the right.
ySimilar letters 0F reference Aindicate corresponding Ais t-he gate. `It is attached to thepost B by means of a groove, C, in the under` side 4of the top rail, `inwhich` the top of the post isy received, and by a hook, I), at the bottom, receiring the lower edge of thev lower bar. g
This post is connected tothe postE of the fence by hooks F,'so. that it may slide up and down, and is held at any required height by pins passing through it into the said postE. V
The opposite cud of the gate is provided with hooks G, which will catch upon the blocksH, or the ends of the boards of the fence,' to hold it higher o r lower, as required.; i
I is ra block, attached to the post B between the lower bars, and 'projecting each side, for the supportof the two braces K pivoted to it, and arranged Vwith 'their upper ends in the groove C, to brace the gate.
tothe post' B, hole, -M,' is made through the top rail 4 at the sides of these bars, through which the upper ends of'oneof the braces may project, when forced up- Vward bythe bars L in moving vtoward the post B.
rlhese bars are beveled at the lower ends, to bear against the post B, so as to hold the upper ends in the groove O.
The said braces prevent the gate from swinging around on the post.B. v
. Either one or both ends of the gate may be raised, as preferred.
In raising the post B, back to bring the center up to it, so as to balance thereat.
The post B is attached to the fence-post, which .is sustained against the tendency of the gate to draw it over bythe boards of the fence.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new'- and desire to secure by Letters Patentl l. The' combination with panel. A, having groove C ing hook G thereon, the hooked postB D, braces K K, and hooked post E F F on the ends of fence-boards, as shown in Iig. 2V of the drawing, and for the purpose described.
HOWARD PIPER.
