To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM G. PAUL, a citizen of the United States, residin at Navarre, in the county of Stark and btate of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Braces, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a brace for the side of a rail, as, for instance, the T-rail forming part of the track of a steam or electric railroad; and the object of the improvement is to provide simple means for adjusting the brace directly to and from the rail in such manner that the adjustment is positive and cannot be varied by a mere loosening of the clamping bolts or other fastening means.
. The principal objects of the invention, thus set forth in general terms, and other ancillary advantages, are attained by the construction and arrangement illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof, in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary plan view of a tie, rail plate and rail, showing braces applied to both sides of the rail; Fig. 2, a side elevation of the tie, rail plate and braces, showing the rail in section; Fig. 3, a fragmentary perspective view of the tie and rail plate with two braces thereon, one of the braces being elevated to show the adjusting means; Fig. 4c, a bottom plan view of one brace; Fig. 5, a fragmentary perspective view of a tie and rail plate, showing the adjusting block elevated therefrom; and Fig. 6, a fragmentary plan view of the rail plate and the adjusting block.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the drawing.
To the tie 1 is secured the plate 2 upon which rests the rail 3, it being understood that these parts are only conventionally shown, as it is immaterial for the purpose of the present invention whether the plate is separate from or integral with the tie, or whether the body of the tie is made of wood, concrete or other material. Upon the rail plate 2 on either or both sides of the rail are provided two upright pins or posts 4: which are formed with or rigidly secured. to the rail plate as may be preferred; the posts on each side of the rail being spaced apart and being preferably located in the longitudinal median line of the tie. A. circular block 5 is engaged with the two posts, the engagement being by one pair of a plurality of pairs of apertures which are provided in the block, the several pairs of apertures being located in different diameters of the block at varying positions with reference to the center thereof; so that, by engaging the pins in different pairs of apertures, the block will occupy varying positions along the median line of the tie, that is to say, to and from the rail.
The brace 6 may be of any well-known form according to the particular type of rail and the particular portion of the rail sought to be sustained, and in the bottom of the base plate 7 of the brace is provided the circular socket 8 which is shaped to neatly receive or fit over the circular block 9; and it is evident that by telescoping the brace socket over the circular block, the brace will be held a 'ainst movement with reference to the rail p ate.
One or more apertures 10 are provided in the base plate of the brace, which apertures are slotted lengthwise of the brace, and the brace is clamped to the rail plate by means of suitable bolts 11 or other form of fastenings; and it is evident that, even though the bolts should be slightly loosened, the circular block will positively hold the brace in a given position of adjustment against the rail, and that the engagement of the posts with the circular block positively prevents a rotation of the block to affect the adjustment of the brace. It is furthermore evident that, for adjusting the brace to and from the rail, it is only necessary to remove the bolts and lift the brace from the circular block, whereupon the same may be turned and the plate posts engaged with any desired pair of apertures in the block for effecting the desired adjustment; after which, by again telescoping the brace over the block and clamping the parts together by the bolts, the brace is positively and rigidly held in the given position of adjustment.
I claim:
1. In combination, a rail plate having two upright posts thereon, a circular block having pairs of apertures in diametric lines at varying relations to the center adapted to engage the posts, and a rail brace having a circular socket in its bottom adapted to fit the block, with means for clamping the brace and plate together.
2. In combination, a rail plate having two upright posts thereon, a circular block having pairs of apertures in diainet'ric lines at Varying relations to the center adapted to engage the posts and a rail brace having a circular socket in its bottom adapted to fit the block, with slotted apertures in the brace 10 and bolts in the apertures for clamping the brace and plate together.
