LAMP-COVER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 4, 1912.
Application filed July 22, 1910. Serial No. 573,236.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, YVILLIAM T. PHILLIPS, citizen of the United States, residing at Berkeley, county of Alameda, State of California, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Lamp-Covers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a lamp cover and particularly to a construction adapted to inclose and protect a lamp when not in use and at other times to be conveniently folded.
The invention has for an object to provide a novel and improved construction of folding lamp cover adapted to be mounted upon a lamp so as to inclose the same when desired and at other times to be folded and retained in a small space ready for use.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention applied; Fig. 2 is a front elevation, with the inclosing flap partly removed; Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical section on line 33 of Fig. 2 with one section of the cover opened and the other folded; Fig. 4 is a detail vertical section of the cover folded and inclosed by the flaps; and Fig. 5 is a detail elevation of the pivot for the cover ribs.
Like numerals of reference refer to like parts in the several figures of the drawing.
The invention is applicable to any form of lamp, lantern or similar device which it is desired to protect and the shape or configuration of the cover may be varied to adapt it to the particular use desired.
As illustrating one application of the invention it is herein shown as applied to an automobile lamp 10 mounted in the supporting fork 11 in the usual manner. The cover frame 12 preferably depends beneath the lamp. and is supported from any suitable part thereof by set screws 13 or otherwise. The frame is formed in two parts secured together, as at 15, and is provided at its upper portion with pivoting posts 16 adapted to receive the ribs or bows 17 for the flexible cover 18 which is secured thereto.
These ribs are formed with a pivoting eye 19 and the eyes of the series of ribs are separated by the washers 20. The ribs of the series are formed with an offset portion 21, these portions being of different lengths to bring the ribs into the same vertical plane.
The cover 18 may be formed of any desired material adapted to fold compactlywhen the cover is closed, preferably of a waterproof character to protect the inclosecl lamp. The cover is secured to the ribs in any convenient manner, for instance as shown at 22 in Fig. 4 and one end thereof is attached to the frame 12 as indicated at 23 in Fig. 3. The rib 24 at the opposite end of each cover section is provided with a latch member 25 of any desired form and adapted to retain the ribs 24 in contact when the cover incloses a lamp. \Vhen the cover is folded and the lamp exposed for use, the cover may be protected and held in folded position by inclosing flaps 26 of similar material secured to the frame at 27 and pro vided with connecting straps and buckle 28, as shown in Fig. 4. The cover is shown as formed of two sections but may be otherwise arranged as found convenient.
- In operation when the cover is applied to a lamp it may be folded and protected by the inclosing flaps until it is desired for use. It may then be quickly and easily released and drawn over the lamp to inclose and protect it from dust, dirt or moisture. When so opened it may be latched in position and retained as long as desired for use. The construction of the ribs permits their mounting upon a single pivot to operate in the same vertical plane.
The invention presents a simple, efficient and economically constructed lamp cover particularly adapted for use upon vehicle lamps.
Having described my invention and set forth its merits, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a cover for a device, a support for said device, separate pivoted flexible cover sections mounted upon said support to swing above and inclose the upper portion of said device and also to fold beneath their pivots to inclose the lower portion of the device, and means for connecting said sections above and below the device to completely inclose the same.
2. A lamp cover comprising separate series of ribs pivoted at opposite sides of a lamp, a flexible cover comprising separately mounted sections secured to said ribs, means connecting the free ends of said sections when opened to inclose said lamp, and a flexible flap mounted to inclose said sections when in folded position beneath said lamp.
3. In a cover for a device, a support for said device, flexible cover sections pivoted at opposite points upon said support to fold into a vertical plane beneath their pivotal line, means below said line for fixedly connecting said sections in said vertical plane, and means for detachably connecting the free ends of said sections above said device.
4. In a cover for a device, a support for said device, a pivoted folding cover mounted -upon said support to fold into a vertical plane beneath its pivotal line and to swing upward in opposite dlrections to completely inclose said device, and means for detachably connecting the free ends of said cover.
5. In a lamp cover, a U-shaped depending support having pivot posts at opposite sides thereof, a series of ribs mounted upon said posts to fold beneath said lamp, flexible cover sections secured to said ribs, and an inclosing flap secured to said support to inclose and protect said sections when folded beneath the lamp.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
