JAMES COSTELLO, OF HINCKLEY, MINNESOTA, ASSIGNOR T0 NATIONAL CHECKING COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF MINNESOTA.
MEMORANDUM-PAD HOLDER.
Application filed J'u1y 23, 1909, Serial No. 509,129. Renewed October 25, 1911.
Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES COSTELLO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hinckley, in the county of Pine and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Memorandum- Pad Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in a combined holder and knife for pads of memorandum slips, such as those sometimes used in restaurants where each slip contains a column or series of price symbols, and is intended to be severed at the figure representing the charge in any given case and the severed portion given to the customer.
The object of the invention is to provide means for holding, manipulating and cutting such slips and consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter specifically described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification :Figure 1, is a perspective view of the holder with a pad in place therein. Fig. 2, is a bottom perspective view of the same and Fig. 3, is a side elevation of one end of the same.
As shown in the drawings the holder comprises a frame A having upwardly flanged sides 2 between which is placed the pad of memorandum slips 3. Having hinged support 4 upon one end of the frame is a right angled cap 5, adapted to turn over the adjacent end of the pad and having in its top wall downward extending teeth 6 to engage with the pad. Slidably supported upon the opposite sides of the frame as by means of the curved portions 7 fitting over the rounded. edges 8 of the frame is a bracket 9.
10 represents a blade journaled upon a cros bar 11 of a spring 12 which spring is supported on the ends of the bracket and so constructed as to exert a downward pressure upon the blade to hold the same against the face of the pad. Supported upon the back of the holder is a spring bail 13, so constructed as to be held under tension against the back of the holder.
In operation, the cap 5 is turned back upon its hinge against the tension of the spring 14., to allow the pad 3 to be placed in the holder with its butt end underneath the cap. When it is desired to tear off a portion of a slip, the bracket 7 will be moved to bring the knife 10 to the proper position upon the pad. The projecting portion of the slip can then be drawn up against the knife edge and torn off and delivered to the customer, and the unsevered portion of the slip carried around the cap and underneath the spring bail 13 as indicated in Fig. 3. The spring bail 13 in addition to serving as a holding device for the unsevered portion of the slips may serve as a support for the carrying chain 15.
l. A device of the class described comprising a pad holding frame, a bracket slidably supported upon the sides of said frame; a spring secured to the ends of said bracket and formed with across bar extending across said holder, and a knife turnable upon said cross bar.
2. A device of the class described comprising a pad holding frame having upward flanged sides, a bracket slidably supported upon the flanged sides of said frame, a transverse knife and a spring support between the ends of said knife and the ends of said bracket.
3. A device of the class described co'mprising a pad holding frame, a bracket slidably over-lapping the sides of said frame, a knife extending traversely above said frame and a spring support between the opposite ends of said knife and said bracket.
4. A device of the class described comprising a padholding frame, a bracket slidably over-lapping the sides of said frame, a knife extending traversely above said frame, a spring support between the opposite ends of said knife and said bracketand a spring bail secured to the back of said frame for the purpose set forth.
Tn testimony whereofI aiflx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES COSTELLO.
