WHEEL-FLANGE LUBRICATQR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 28,1912.
Application filed October 12, 1911. .Serial No. 654,322. y
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES H. MINER, citi- Zen of the Unit-ed States, residing at Lumberton, Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wheel- Flange Lubricators, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to improvements upon the wheel flange lubricator 'which forms the subject of Letters Patent of the United States, granted to me on the sixteenth day of July 1907 Number 860048.
The object of the invention is to provide means whereby the oiling device may be readily and accurately adjusted to insure proper action thereof without interfering with its attachment to the` truck or motor part.
The invention includes the novel features of construction and arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described and particularly set forth `in the appended designed to carry the oil supply and is provided with a pad 3, designed to contact with the flange to be lubricated. This pad which is of absorbent or wick material, designed to convey the oil by capillary attraction, depends within the oil reservoir to or near the bottom, kand the oil reservoir is provided with a llingspout 2a.
Projecting upward from the Upper part of the reservoir is a leaf spring 4 which has its upper end suitably secured to an arm 5 depending from a member 6 which is secured to a stationary part of the truck or locomotive, as for instance, the truck hanger. The arm 5 is deflected outwardly from the spring and through alining openings in the arm and spring passes a bolt 7 which is provided with a thumb nut 8, and a coiled spring 97 the parts being so arranged that by turning the thumb nut the tension upon the spring 9 may be varied. As the tension l of the spring is increased or diminished the reservoir will be moved from or toward the wheel flange, and the combination of leaf and coiled springs enables an easy and accurate adjustment of the proper position for the pad to be brought automatically int-o contact with the wheel flange in the manner contemplated by my aforesaid patent.
The motion of the car motor or locomotive imparting a swinging or rocking motion causes the lubricant carrier to swing as described. The springs limit the throw or Contact with the flange. I may use a solid substance to lubricate instead of a fluid, in which case, the stick or carrier would swing and be regulated by the spring and screw as described, Such a modification is illustrated in Fig. 2 in which the lubricant, as for instance a block 2X of graphite or mixture containing graphite, is secured to or carried by the lower end of the spring 4* and has its edge adapted to contact with the wheel flange. y
Having thus described my invention what I claim is 1. A flange oiler comprising a lubricant applying device, a spring arm supporting said device, a supporting member to which the end of said spring arm is rigidly connected and means acting on said spring arm between the supporting ymember and the lu-` bricant applying device for varying the position of the spring arm, substantially as described.
2. A flange oiler comprising an oil tank and pad, a spring arm extending from said tank, a supporting member to which the end of said arm is rigidly connected, said supporting member having an odset portion, and any adjustable connection between said offset portion and spring arm.
3. A flange oiler comprising an oil tank and pad, a spring arm extending from said tank, a supporting member to which the end In testimony whereof7 I aix my signaof said arm is rigidly connected, said supture in presence of two Witnesses. portlng member having an offset portion, a
T bolt passing through the spring arm and JAMES H' MUER oset portion and provided with a thumb Vitnesses:
nut, and a coiled spring encircling the bolt H. B. MGIRVIN,
and bearing against the spring arm. F. L. DENNIS.
