H. B. HUDSON.
HAMMER ATTACHMENT.
'APPLIOATION r-ILED Huma, 1912.

www,
Copies of this patent may be obtained for HENRY B. HUDSON, OF FARGO, NORTH DAKOTA.
HAMMER ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 21, 1912.
Application filed February 28, 1912. Serial No. 680,501.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY B. HUDSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fargo, in the county of Cass and State of North Dakota, have invented a new and useful Hammer Attachment; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, suf-h as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a new and useful attachment, applicable to claw hammers and the like, for facilitating the extracting of nails, spikes and the like.
The principal object of the invention is to provide an attachment of this nature, in which simple, eflicient, practical and desirable features exist.
One of the features of the invention presides in means carried by the attachment for receiving the head of a nail, so that the same may be started, prior to being finally driven home.
Another feature of the invention is that the attachment and the tool or hammer may be so manipulated, that wires and the like may be stretched, for instance fence, and telephone wires. It is to be understood, that the attachment may be ap-plied to all mechanics tools having claws, for the extraction of nails, spikes and the like.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings z-Figure l is a view showing the application of the attachment, for extracting a nail. Fig. 2 is a view showing the manner in which the nail is held by the attachment to the hammer, for starting the nail, prior to being finally driven home. Fig. 3 is a view showing the attachment and hammer employed as a wire stretcher. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the attachment. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
Referring to the drawings l designates a hammer. Penetrating the hammer head is a bolt 2, having a nut 3 threaded thereto. The attachment 4 is in the form of a U- shaped strap, constructed of any suitable metal. The sides of the strap are provided with bayonet slots 5, which are disposed opposite one another and in registration. The bolt 2 extends through the slots, thereb permitting the strap to be adjusted in di erent positions, in orderto attain the results, shown in Figs. l, 2 and 3. The base 7 is formed with an extension tooth 8, which embeds itself in the surface, on which the strap rests, while extracting a nail or stretching a wire with the claws 9 of the hammer. The base is provided with a V-shaped recess 10. This recess is arranged exactly opposite to the tooth, and is adapted to receive the shank of a nail or the like, immediately below the head thereof, to hold the nail in the proper position, so as to permit it to be started, prior to being finally driven, as shown in Fig. 2. A leaf spring 12, secured to the base of the strap, as shown at 13 has its free end covering the V-shaped recess, so as to hold the nail in position, because of the same engaging the head thereof.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is l. In combination, a hammer head, an attachment comprising a U-shaped metallic strap arching the head, the sides of the strap having bayonet slots, and a bolt passing through the slots and the head. for adjustably securing the strap to the head.
2. In combination, a hammer head, an attachment comprising a U-shaped metallic strap arching t-he head, the sides of the strap having bayonet slots, and a bolt passing through the slots and the head, for adjustably securing the strap to the head, the U- shaped strap having a base provided with an offset tooth, adapted to hold the cstrap anchored, while extracting a nail with a hammer.
3. In combination, a hammer head, an attachment comprising a U-shaped metallic strap arching the head, the sides of the strap having bayonet slots, and a bolt passing through the slots and the head, for adjustably securing the strap to the head, the strap having a base provided with a V- shaped recess, to receive the shank of a nail immediately below the head, and a spring secured to the base, adapted to bear against the head of the nail.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HENRY B. I-IUDSON.
