Be it known that I, LoUIs F. FEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kokomo, in the county of Howard and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Filing-Cabinet, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to improvements in filing cabinets, the primary object of the invention being the provision of a cabinet which will retain files or sheet paper in superposed and horizontal position when the cabinet is closed, but which when the cabinet is opened will carry and move said files to a position substantially at right angles to the closed position and simultaneously cause the respective files to incline at an angle whereby the upper end of each and every one is readily visible.

A further object of the present invention is the provision of a filing cabinet provided with a closure connected to the bottom thereof and disposed'to swing outwardly and assume a position at right angles to the cabinet, the same carrying a portion of the top cover of the cabinet which when extended at right angles forms a leg or support for the outer free end of the main closure of the cabinet, said main closure being further provided with means for slidably and removably connecting thereto a plurality of files in the form of sheets.

A still further object of the present invention is the provision of a hingedly connected plate operably connected to the closure of the cabinet to be moved as a lever from the normal resting position thereof upon the bottom of the cabinet to an inclined position to form a rest for the files carried by the closure and permit the inclining thereof to a readily accessible and readable position.

lVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Referring to the drawings, the cabinet or receptacle 1 is mounted upon four legs 2, the upper rear portion of the cabinet being closed by a rigid panel 3 so as to provide the upper open portion 4 and the outer opening 5 to the cabinet.

I'Iingedly connected at 6 to the bottom 1 of the cabinet is a main closure or front wall 7 provided with the dust excluding and guiding strip 8 secured upon each side thereof and in parallel. Connected to and carried by the closure or front wall 7 of the cabinet upon the inner face thereof are the two parallel bars or rods 9 which provide a means for the fitting thereupon of the slotted openings 10 of the file 11 of usual construction. Mounted for sliding movement upon these rods is a plate 12 which provides a means for accommodating various numbers of the files 11 to retain the lower ends thereof in closed position upon the respective rods 9.

Adjustably mounted within the centrally disposed longitudinal recess 13 of the main closure 7 is a sliding bar 16 for holding the ends of the records or files 11 when the cabinet is full. The bar 15 and winged nut 14: in conjunction with the slot 17 of said bar are provided to lock the bar and hold the same in the desired adjusted and locked position.

Hingedly connected to the upper or outer end of the main closure 7 by means of the hinges 18 is the plate 19 which forms when the devlce is in the position as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, a leg to properly support the upper end of the closure 7 and in file exhibiting position, but when in the position as shown in dotted linesFig. 3, forms a closure for the open space 1. at the top of the cabinet and with its catch 20 with the coacting catch member 21 of the rigid top 3 of the cabinet locks the cabinet closed.

Hingedly connected to the lower or rear end of the main closure 7 by means of hinges 22, is a false bottom or file retaining wall 23, the same being disposed to be moved with the main closure from the dotted position as shown in Fig. 3 to the full line position therein, the dash lines demonstrating the position of the files 11 when the main closure 7 and the false bottom or file retaining plate 23 assumes the position as shown in Fig. 3.

As clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the bottom 1 is recessed as at 1 to accommodate the right angled portion a of the hinge 22 and also the under side of the file retaining wall 23, thus providing a means whereby when the main closure 7 is in file exhibiting position, the file retaining wall 23 will be lifted from the dotted line position Fig. 3 to the full line position thereof, the recess 1 permitting the hinge and file retaining wall 23 to assume the dotted line position when the main closure is in vertical position.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings, it is evident that the files carried by the main closure 7 of this cabinet may be placed in the position within the cabinet as illustrated 'in dotted lines in Fig. 3 by the simple lifting of the main closure to close the forward open end 5 and the top open portion 4: thereof, and that the files will then rest in a flat position and not be disposed so as to wrinkle the paper or cause any undue strain upon their connection to the rods 9. Fur ther when the said closure 7 is moved from the position as shown in dotted lines Fig. 3 to the position as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the said false bottom or file retaining plate 23 will be moved from the bottom 1 of the cabinet to the inclined position to provide a means for supporting the files 11 in a readily accessible and readable position, said plates 23 acting in conjunction with the closure 7, similarly to a lever, in lifting the free end of the respective files and retaining them in the desired position.

l/Vhat is claimed is:

1. A filing cabinet, having a vertically disposed receptacle, witha portion of the top and an entire front open, a main closure for the front hingedly connected to the bottom of the cabinet, a closure for the top hingedly connected to the upper end of said main closure and disposed to close the upper portion of the cabinet or form a support for the outer free end of the main closure when in horizontal position, file carrying means connected to and carried by said main clo sure, and means connected to and operated by the main closure for supporting the files carried by the main closure inan inclined position when the top closure is disposed to support the outer free end of the main closure.

2. A. filing cabinet, having a vertically disposed receptacle with a portion of the top and an entire front open, a main closure for the front hingedly connected to the bottom of the cabinet, a closure for the top hingedly connected to the upper end of said main closure and disposed to close the upper portion of the cabinet or form a support for the outer free end of the main closure when in horizontal position, file carrying means connected to and carried by said main closure, and a plate operably connected to the lower end of the main closure upon its inner face and disposed to move to and from the bottom of the cabinet to provide a support for the upper ends of the files when in eX-' said main closure, and a plate hingedly connected to the lower inner end of the main closure to be moved in an arc of a circle from the bottom of the cabinet to an inclined position therewithin, said plate forming a support for the files carried by the main closure.

4:. A filing cabinet, having a receptacle with an open front, a main closure for sald open front hingedly connected to the bottom of the cabinet and disposed for movement at right angles thereto, file carrying devlces connected to the inner face of said closure, and means operably connected to said main closure for engaging the files when con nected to such device for retaining the files in inclined position when the closure 1s at right angles to the receptacle.

5. A filing cabinet, havlng a receptacle with an open front, a main closure for said open front hingedly connected to the bottom of the cabinet and disposed for movement at right angles thereto, file carrying devices connected to the inner face of said closure, means for supporting the outer free end of said closure when at right angles to the receptacle, and means for engaging the lowest file carrier by the closure and forming a support for the files when the closure is at right angles to the receptacle.
