COMBINED MOP HOLDER AND WRINGER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 14:, 1912.
Application filed January 11, 1911, Serial No. 601,979. Renewed February 21, 1912. Serial No. 679,189.
To all whom it may concern Be it lmown that I, WILFRED Dorian, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Mop Holders and W'ringers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to brushing and scrubbing and particularly to a class thereunder known as mops and wringers.
An object of this invention is to provide a novel mop head and means associated therewith for holding a mop and other means associated therewith for wringing the said map, the said mop being applied to the wringer in such a manner as to permit the turning of the mop. whereby the cloth may be wrung without wetting that portion which has already been treated by reason of it having been drawn between the rolls.
A further object of this invention is to provide novel means associated with a mop head whereby the rolls of a wringer are yieldingly held in contact with each other and whereby a clamping member is yieldingly held in engagement with the mop for the purpose of confining it in the mop head while being used or while being wrung.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a mop head having the shafts of wringer rolls journaled therein and novel means associated therewith for holding the shafts in the journal. bearings of the head and for simultaneously confining a clamp which is also yieldably held in operative relation to the said head.
Vith the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 illustrates a view in elevation of a mop embodying the invention; Fig. 2 illustrates a view in elevation, partly in section showing the mop head and wringer; Fig. 8 illustrates a sectional view on the line AB of Fig. 1 the handle being shortened as compared with the handle shown in Fig. 4; Fig. 4 illustrates a detail view of a handle and a latch associated therewith; Fig. 5 illustrates a view similar to Fig. 4 except that the latch is in a different position of adjustment; and Fig. 6 illustrates a perspective View of one extremity of the mop head, the opposite extremity being shown as broken away; Fig. '7 illustrates a perspective view of the lower jaw of the cloth clamping member.
In these drawings 8 denotes a handle having a collar 9 thereon to which the latch 10 is pivoted, the said latch having ears 11 aperturcd to receive the ends of the tension members 12 here shown as wires coiled to form springs 13. The latch 10 is capable of being moved from the position shown in Fig. 4: to that shown in Fig. 5 in which latter position of the parts, the tension of the tension members is relieved or released for a purpose to be presently explained.
The mop head 14 has a handle socket l5 and a rib 16 which rib is provided with an aperture 17 near one end, the said aperture being designed for the purpose of receiving a U-shaped latch 18 which may be swung to engage the crank handle 19 on the shaft 20. The mop head 14 has side extensions 21 slotted to form bearings for the shaft- 20 of the wringer roll 22 and also bearings for the shaft 28 of the wringer roll 24-, the said shafts 20 and 23 being slidable in the bean ings and being removable therefrom at the will of an operator.
A clamping member consists of a bar 25 having serrations 'or teeth 26 on its surface designed to coact with the under surface of the head 14 for the purpose of clamping the mop cloth 27 which is interposed between the clamping member 25 and the head 14. The member 25 has lugs 28 on its ends and there are shoulders 29 at the junction of the bar and lugs which shoulders are designed to engage the extensions 21 of the head for the purpose of guiding the bar 25 longitudinally of the bearings formed by the extensions, the lugs 28 of the said bar being adapted to travel in the slots 30 of said extensions 21.
The crank handle 19 may be provided with any appropriate knob or hand grip 31 but as that is an immaterial detail, it will not be described more fully.
The tension members 12 extend over the corners of the frame and have their lower ends bent to form loops 32 which embrace and form a support for the said shaft 20. The tension on the said members 12 is relieved when the latch is thrown to the position shown in Fig. 5 and is increased when the latch is thrown to the position shown in Fig. 4 in which position of the latch, the roll 22 is drawn tightly against the roll 2a so that when the roll 22 is rotated and the mop cloth is interposed between the said rolls, the moisture or water from the said mop cloth is wrung from the cloth while the ends of the cloth are being confined between the clamping bar 25 and the head of the mop as is shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
By reason of the fact that the tension on the roll 22 may be removed, the end of the mop cloth may be conveniently inserted between the rolls 22 and 24c and as the pressure of the rolls 22 and 24; is communicated to the clamping member, it follows that the pressure of the clamping member on the mop cloth is also relieved.
I claim 1. In a mop and wringer, a mop head having bearings thereon, a clamp slidable in the bearings and adapted to coact with the mop head for clamping a mop cloth, wringer rolls journaled in the bearings, and means for exerting a tension on the rolls and clamping member.
2. In a mop and wringer, a mop head having bearings, a clamping member slidable in the bearings and adapted to coact with the mop head for clamping a mop cloth, wringer rolls j ournaled in the bearings, tension members connected to one of the rolls, and means for adjusting the tension members.
3. In a combined mop and wringer, a mop head having bearings, wringer rolls having shafts journaled in the bearings, a crank handle connected to one of the shafts for turning the same, yielding means for holding the rolls in contact with each other, and means for operating the yielding means to release said rolls from contact with each other, and a clamp made operative by the action of the said last named means.
4. In a mop and wringer, a mop head having journal bearings, a clamping member having lugs slidable in the journal bearings and shoulders at the junction of the clamping member and lugs adapted to engage the journal bearings for guiding the said clamping member, teeth on the clamping member adapted to coact with the mop .head for holding a mop cloth, and means for yieldingly pressing the clamping member against the cloth.
5. In a combined mop and wringer, a mop head having journal bearings, a clamp ing bar having lugs slidable in the bearings, teeth on the clamping member for engaging a mop cloth, rolls having shafts j ournaled in the bearings, one of said shafts projecting beyond the bearings, tension wires connected to the shafts beyond the bearings, and means for regulating the tension of the tension wires.
6. In a combined mop and wringer, a mop head having slotted journal bearings, a clamping bar slidable in the said slots and adapted to coact with the head, rolls having shafts slidable and rotatable in the said slots, and tension members connected to one of the shafts for pressing the rolls into engagement and for pressing the clamping bar into operative relation with the head.
7. In a combined mop and wringer, a clamping head having slotted journal bearings, a clamping member slidable in the slots, rolls having shafts journaled in the bearings, tension wires connected to one of the shafts, a latch to which the tension wires are connected, means for pivotally mounting the said latch whereby the said latch may be operated to hold the rolls together and to press the clamping member against the clamping head, or to allow the rolls to slide apart and the clamping member to fall away from the clamping head.
8. In a combined mop and wringer, a mop head having bearings thereon, wringer rolls having shafts, the said shaft-s being journaled in the bearings, a latch member, tension members having one of their eX- tremities connected to the ends of one of I VVILFRED DUPRE. WVitnesses:
