FUSE-PLUG.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 7, 1912.
Application filed September 3, 1910. Serial No. 580,358.
To all whom 2'25 may concern:
Be it known that I, PAUL A. BRENDEL, a citizen of the United States of America, and residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have in vented a certain new and Improved Fuse- Plug, of which the following is a specification. Y
My invention relates to fuse plugs andthe particular object of my invention is to so locate the fuse with relation to the 'usual mica-protected opening in the cap that it may be more readily observed than hitherto. In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section on'the lines 11, Fig. 2; and Fig. 2 is a plan of a plug with the cap in dotted lines.
My improved plug has the usual insulating body 5 and screw shell side contact 6, as well as the inclosing metallic cover 7 through the large sight aperture 8 in which the fuse chamber 10 may be viewed through the mica disk 9. Instead of the usual central well within the chamber 10, to receive one end of the fuse strip, I provide a contact pin 11, with head12 at its lower end serving as the center plug contact and connected at its' upper end with a 'metallic strip 13." The latter is angled up over .the shoulder 14 on the porcelain arid affords a good contact for the end of the fuse strip 15. The latter stretches practically horizontally beneath the cap from the shoulder 14 to the shoulder 17, and the calibration point 16 is thus clearly visible. One end of the fuse is angled down, into the well 18 where the solder 19 electrically connects it to the shell 6. The other end is soldered to the connecting strip 13 being offsetat 20 to prevent the solder from possibly flowing along the fuse to the calibration point and thus destroying the safety of the fuse, It will be noted further that the recess in which the strip 13 is located is made of such depth that there is no danger of the end of the disrupted fuse which leads to the shell terminal, bending down and contacting 11 after the fuse is blown, an unprotected circuit.
I do hot limit my invention to the details of the particular construction may be varied without invention. v
I claim as my 1nvention:,
thus establishing departing from my v(lepton of thin patent may be obtained for with the strip or pin shown, which 1. A fuse of the screw. plug type comprising an insulating body with fuse chamber, a cover therefor with sight aperture, a center contact, a conductor leading therefrom to one side of the fuse chamber, a shoulder in the opposite side of the fuse chamber forming one side of a side contact well, a side contact communicating with said well, and I a fuse passing substantially horizontally across the fuse chamber from said center contact conductor to said shoulder and connected to the side contact in said well, said fuse being offset at the end in contact with center contact conductor to retain the connecting solder, substantially as described.
2. A fuse of the screw plug type compris ing an insulating body with fuse chamber, a cover therefor with sight aperture, a center contact, a conductor leading therefrom to one side of the fuse chamber, a shoulder in the opposite side of the fuse chamber formcontact communicating with said well, and a fuse passing substantially horizontally across the fusechamber from said center contact conductor to said shoulder and connected to the side contact. in said well, said fuse being calibrated at a point sufliciently close to said shoulder to prevent the accidental restablishment of the fuse circuit through the side contact endof the fuse after the fuse is opened, scribed. l
3. A fuse of the screw plug type comprising an insulating body with-fuse chamber, a cover therefor with sight aperture, a center contact, a conductor leading therefrom to one side of the fuse chamber, a shoulder in the opposite side of the fuse chamber form ing one side of a side contact well, a side contact communicating with said well, and a fuse passing substantially horizontally across the fuse chamber from said center contact conductor to said shoulder and connected to the side contact in said well, substantially as described. f I v In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
