LUBRICANT- CUP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 39, 1912.
fipplication filed may 24, 1909. Serial I'To. $97,855.
To all iimayroaccm:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. BOWEN,
' of Auburn, in the county .of Cayuga and State of New York, have invented a new and useful LubricantCup, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its object the productienl'of alubricant cup which is particularly simple in construction and economical in manufacture; and to this end it consists in. theno'vel. features hereinafter set forth and claimed.
*In describing-this invention, reference is had to theaecompanying drawing in which like' characters designate corresponding I parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is an elevation of a lubricant cup embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional-view thereof. Fig. 3 is a plan of, the-detached base of the up. Fig. 4 is w an inverted plan of said base, and Fig. 5 is a detail view of! a modified construction of the base; Y 7
The base ofmy lubricant cup comprises Iafstem memberand ahead, the stem member 1 being hollow and having its lower end 2 threaded for securement to the partto be lubricated, andi-ts upfperend formed with a non-circular portion 3 and with an annular shoulder 4 at the base .of the portion 3.
The intermediate rt 5 of the stem member 1' is of enlarged dlfiJIlGtBI and is angular in cross-section for facilitating its engagement by'a wrench 'or similar tool to attach or remove the cup;
-.- Preferably the head of the base comprises upper ant lower metal disks 6, 7 and an 1ntermediate.relatively soft; disk '8, the. upper diskfi being of larger diameter than the lower :di kiand having its periphery.
threaded, and-the lower disk 7 resting upon the shoulder/i of the stem member 1. The intermediate disk'8 is formed of suitable flex ibleand fibrous material, as leather, and is ofsubstantially the same diameter as the upper disk 6, the disk 8 forming a-tight joint between-the base and the cap of the cup for preventing leaking of the lubricant, J the periphery of such disk 8 conform ng to theinner face of the cap and pressing into the internal threads thereof. The head of the base may be secured to the stem member,
7 as illustrated in Fig. 2, by spinning or otherwise distorting 'the' metal at 9 at the upon' the top facei of the upper disk, theupper end of the stem member. laterally combined thickness of the disks 6, 7- and 8 being preferably less than the length of the noncircular portion 3 of the stem member, and the upper end of saidstem member projecting above the top face of the disk 6.
in the walls of the threaded central openings of said disks. Y
The cap 0 of my lubricant cup is formed open at one end for receiving the base and is provided with .internal threads 12 which engage the threads of the upper disk 6 and the periphery of the intermediate disk 8.
What I claim is 11. In a lubricant cup, a cap having a threaded inner face, and a base comprising a hollowstem and a head, .the stem having a non-circular upper portion and a peripheral shoulder projecting from the lower part of said portion, and the head consisting of a pair of spaced apart metal disks of unequal diameter, and an'intermediate disk of flexible fibrous material, said disks having central openings corresponding to the non-circular portion of the stem and being metal disk of smaller diameter engaging the peripheral shoulder of the stem, and a space being interposed between the periphery of said disk and the inner face of the cap, the metal disk of larger diameter having a threaded periphery coacting with the threaded inner face of the cap, and the intermediate disk of'flexible fibrous material being of substantially the same diameter as the metal disk of larger diameter, and
pressing into the threads of the inner face of the cap, the margin of the intermediate disk extending with its lower-face normally in a plane substantially coincident with the face of the metal disk. of smaller div and the lower face of said marginl pp ameter, beingfree to enter the space between the periphery of said disk of smaller diameter and the inner face of the cap, said non-cire mounted on said non-circular portion, the
ing central openings for receiving said up-' per portion of the stem and being nonrotatably mounted thereon, the metal disk of smaller diameter engaging the peripheral shoulder of the stem, and a space being interposed between the periphery of said disk and the inner face of the cap, the metal.
disk of larger diameter having a threaded periphery coacting with the threaded inner face of the cap, and the intermediate disk of flexible fibrous material being of substanthreads of the inner face of the cap, the
margin of the intermediate disk extending with its lower face normally in a plane substantially coincident with the upper face of the metal disk of smaller diameter, and the lower face of said margin being free to enter the space between the periphery of said disk of smaller diameter and the inner face of the cap, and the stem having means associated therewith for holding the three disks in position toward the shoulder.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two attesting witnesses, at Auburn, in the county of Cayuga, in the State of New York, this 17th day of May, 1909.
GEORGE w. BOWEN.
