COIN SAVINGS-BANK.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUFUs T. Pannen, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coin Savings- Vanks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to coin savings banks and more specifically to that class thereof in which is provided means for effecting the registration of the amountof the coins deposited in the bank.
The object of my invention is the production of a bank of this character which will be of improved construction, one whichmay 'be readily and easily manipulated, and one which will be of high efficiency in use.
Other objects will appear hereinafter'.

My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specifica.- tion, and in which,

The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawings comprises a body l which is of substantially rectangular form as shown and formed preferably of metal. The interior of the body l is divided by a horizontally extending partition 2 into upper and lower compartments. Slidably mounted in the upper compartment upon the upper side of the partition 2 is a block 3 of substantially rectangular form. The block 3 is normally held at one terminal of its movement by means of a compression spring 4t which is mounted upon a pin 5, one extremity of the latter being fixed in a stationary post G which is formed upon the upper side of the partition 2, the opposite extremity of said pin being adapted to Specification of Letters Patent.

Formed in the block 3 are coin passages or recesses 7 and 7', which register at their upper ends with correspondingly positioned coin admission openings orslots S and 8, respectively, provided in the upper wall of the body l, said coin passages registering with said slots only when the block 3 is in its normal position or in the position in which the same is normally held by the s pring 4. Traversing the lower ends of the coin passages 7 is a spring arm 9 upon which the coins are deposited after passage thereof through said passages, as clearly shown in Figs. l and 3. The spring member 9 is adapted normally to serve as a detent for the block 3, preventing sliding movement thereof, the free end of said spring being adapted to normally engage behind a shoulder 9 of said block as clearly shown in Fig. l, the arrangement being such therefore that sliding movement of said block will be permitted only upon depression of the free end of said member 9.
Mounted for vertical movement in the block 3 is a presser member 10 which is provided with laterally projecting lingers 11, said block being cut away as shown in order to aiford clearance for said lingers during vertical movement or depression thereof. The fingers 11 project across the upper ends of the coin passages 7 and 7 so that upon depression of the member 10 said fingers will engage the coin positioned in the lower end of either of the coin passages and effect depression thereof, and hence of the free end of the spring member or detent 9 to effect release of the block 3. Thus it will be seen that without a coin positioned in either of the passages 7 or 7, the presser member l0 will be inoperative to effect release of the block, the position of a coin in either of said passages being required to serve to establish the operative connection between said presser member and the detent. XVhen the block 3 has been released as mentioned, the same may be slid forwardly by engagement with the member l() to carry the coin forwardly toward a coin admission opening l2 provided in the partition 2, the head of said presser member being so formed, as shown, as to adapt the same for depression and also sliding movement when engaged by the thumb. When the coin has reached a posi tion in registration with the opening 12 the same will drop by gravity through said opening into the coin receiving chamber below. A compression spring 10 coperates with the presser member 10 to normally hold the latter at its upper terminal of movement, the upper wall of the body 1 being slotted as at 10 to afford clearance for the stem of said presser member during sliding movement of the same.
Mounted in the lower chamber of the body 1 is a transversely extending shaft 13 upon which are rotatably mounted disks 14 and 15, said disks carrying numerals on their peripheries indicative of cents and dollars respectively, the former bearing twenty equally spaced numerals progressing at intervals of iive from Zero to one hundred, the latter being preferably ten equally spaced numerals from Zero to ten. The disk 14 is provided with a ratchet wheel 16 which cooperates with a spring pawl 17 carried by the block 3, said pawl being, however, normally held by its own resiliency in inoperative position, relative to said ratchet wheel, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. Projecting laterally from the detent spring member 9 is an arm 18 which engages over said pawl 17. The arrangement is such as will be observed, that, upon depression of the free end of member 9, in the manner above set forth, the free end of pawl 17 will be moved downwardly to op erative position, or into engagement with the ratchet wheel 16, and so that upon forward sliding of the block 3, said ratchet wheel and hence the disk 14 will be rotated.
The coin passage 7 is designed for the reception of a nickel and the coin passage 7 for the reception of a dime, the slots 8 and 8 being respectively of dimensions such as to adapt the same to snugly receive coins of these denominations. Said passages are so spaced that a dime positioned in passage 7 of the block 3 must be moved twice the distance which it is required to move said block with a nickel in passage 7 in order that the coin be brought to register with the opening 12 in the partition 2. This being so, in the carriage of a dime from the coin admission slot 8 in the upper wall of the bank, to the opening 12 of the partition the ratchet wheel 16 and hence the spring 14, will be rotated a distance equal to twice that which the same is moved in the earriage of a nickel to the opening 12. The movement of the block in the carriage of a nickel is such as to impart a movement onetwentieth of a revolution to the disk 14, or so as to indicate the deposit of tive cents, and so that the carriage of a dime will evidently effect the movement of said disk two-twentieths of a revolution or to indicate a deposit equal to two nickels. The disks 14 and 15 are operatively connected so that the disk 15 will be rotated one-tenth of a revolution every single revolution of the disk 14 and so that for each dollar which is represented by one revolution of the disk 14, the disk 15 will be moved to indicate this amount. The connection between the disks 14 and 15 is established by means of a spring pressed pawl 19 which is slidably mounted upon one side of the disk 14, disposed substantially radially thereto. The pawl 19 coperates with a ratchet wheel 20 which is formed upon the adjacent side of the disk 15. with said ratchet wheel 20, the same engaging therewith only when said pawl is forced into engagement with said wheel by contact of the outer end of said pawl with the under side of partition 2, this necessarily being but once every revolution of the disk 14, and so that said disk 15 will be actuated or moved one-tenth of a revolution every complete revolution of the disk 14. The numerals on the peripheries of said disks 14 and 15 register with an exposure opening Q1 in the front side of the body 1 so that the amount deposited in the bank, as indicated by said disks may be there ascertained, said slot being covered as shown by a transparent closure 22.
Secured to and projecting from the post 6 is a bar Q3 which is adapted to project through an opening Q3 provided in the block 3 to engage with thc coin provided in either of the passages 7 and 7 to limit the movement thereof as will be readily understood, said bar thus serving to limit the movement of the block and hence as a means of determining the amplitude of rotation of the registering disks upon each operation of said block. The arrangen'ient is such as will be observed, that when the coin has been dropped from the block 3 the disconnection of the pawl 17 with the ratchet wheel 16 will be effected, and so that any movement of the block after the dropping of the coin will have no eifect upon the registering mechanism. Spring detents 24 and 24 coperate respectively with the ratchet wheel 16 and ratchet teeth Q5 formed in the periphery of the disk 15 in order to prevent retrograde rotation of the disks 14 and 15.
The coins may be removed from the body 1 of the bank through a hinged door Q6 which is provided in the bottom of said body. The door 26 is normally held in open position, the same being locked in closed position by a spring 27 secured to the free end thereof which is adapted to engage over a post 2S formed upon the bottom of the bank body. The arrangement is such that the door 26 may be unlocked only through the medium of ar lug 29 which pro- The pawl 19 normally does not engage jects from the adjacent side of the disk 15 and so that the bank will be automatically opened only when the maximum amount, which may be registered by the disks 14: and l5, and which in this case is ten ($10.00) dollars has been deposited in the bank. A bell or other sounding device 30 is preferably suspended from the partition 2 adjacent the coin admission opening l2 for engagement by a coin dropping through said opening to audibly signal the operator that the coin has been dropped into the coin receiving chamber.
A coin savings bank of the construction set forth is of simple and economical construction, hence may be manufactured at a low cost, the same may be readily and easily manipulated, and is of high efliciency in use.
IVhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not Wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. In a coin savings bank, a hollow body having a coin admission slot; a slidable member having a recess adapted for registration with said coin admission slot; depressible means for locking said slidable member in position with said recess registering with said slot; and depressible operating means for moving said slidable member, said operating means being normally inoperative, a coin deposited into said slot and passing into said recess being adapted to establish an operative connection between said operative means and said locking means for effecting release of said slidable member, substantially as described.
2. In a coin savings bank, a hollow body having a coin admission slot; a slidable member having a recess adapted for registration with said coin admission slot; depressible resilient means for locking said slidable member in position with said recess registering with said slot; and depressible operating means for depressing said locking means and for moving said slidable member, said operating means being normally inoperative, a coin deposited into said slot and passing into said recess being adapted to establish an operative connection between said operating means and said locking means for effecting depression of the latter and release of said slidable member, substantially as described.
3. In a coin savings bank, a hollow body having a coin admission slot; a slidable member having a recess adapted for registration with said coin admission slot; depressible means for locking said slidable member in position with said recess registering with said slot; spring controlled depressible operating means for depressing said locking means and for moving said slidable member, said operating means being normally inoperative to depress said locking means, a coin deposited into said slot and passing into said recess being adapted to establish an operative connection between said operating means and said locking means for effecting depression of said locking means, substantially as dedescribed.

In a coin savings bank, a hollow body having a coin admission slot; a slidable member having a recess adapted for registration with said coin admission slot; resilient means for normally maintaining said slidable member in a position with said recess registering with said slot; depressible means for locking said slidable .member in said position; and depressible operating means for depressing said locking means and for moving said slidable member, said operating means being normally inoperative to depress said locking means, a coin deposited into said slot and passing into said recess being adapted to establish an operative connection between said operating means and said locking means for eifecting depression of said locking means, substantially as described,

In a coin savings bank, a hollow body having a coin admission slot; a slidable member having a recess adapted for registration with said coin admission slot; resilient depressible means for locking said slidable member in position with said recess registering with said slot; a presser member for depressing said locking means and for operating said slidable member, said presser member being normally inoperative to effect depression of said locking means, a coin deposited in said slot and passing into said recess being adapted to establish an operative connection between said operating means and said locking means for effecting depression of said locking means and release of said slidable member; a coin receiving chamber in the lower end portion of said body, there being a coin admission opening leading to said chamber registerable with said coin recess in said slidable member; and means for limiting the movement of said slidable member to effect the deposit of the coin therefrom into said last mentioned coin receiving slot when said slidable member is operated, substantially as described.
6. In a coin savings bank, a hollow body having a plurality of coin admission slots adapted to permit of the passage of coins of diiterent pre-determined denominations; a slidable meml er having a plurality of recesses adapted tor registration with said coin admission slots; resilient depressible means for locking said slidable member in position vvith said recesses registering ivith said slots; a presser member for eiiecting depression ot said locking means and for operating said slidable member, saidpresser member being normally inoperative to effect depression oit said locking means, a coin deposited in one of said slots and passing into one of said recesses being adapted to establish an operative connection betiveen said operating means and said locking means tor effecting depression of said locking means and release of said slidable member; a coin receiving chamber in the lower end portion of said body, there being a coin admission opening leading to said chamber registerable` With said coin recesses in said slidable member; and means for limiting the movement of said slidable member to eiect the deposit of a coin therefrom into said last mentioned coin admission slot ivhen said slidable member is operated, substantially as described.
7. ln a coin savings bank, a hollen7 body having a coin admission slot; a slidable member having a recess adapted for registration with said coin admission slot, resilient depressible means tor locking said slidable member in position vvith said recess registering with said slot; a presser member tor depressing said locking means and for operating said slidable member, said presser member being normally inoperative to effect depression of said locking means, a coin deposited in said slot and passing into said recess being adapted to establish an operative connection between said operating means and said locking means for effecting depression ot said locking means and release of said slidable member; a coin receiving chamber in the loiver end portion of said body, there being a coin admission opening leading to said chamber registerable With said coin recess in said slidable member; means for limiting the movement of said slidable member to effect the deposit of the coin therefrom into said last mentioned coin receiving slot When said slidable member is operated; and registering mechanism aruomatically operable upon operation oit said slidable member to register the amount or" the coins deposited in the bank, substantially as described.
8. ln a coin savings bank, a hollow body having a coin admission slot; a slidable member having a recess adapted for registration 1vvith said coin admission slot; resilient depressible means for locking said slidable member in posit-ion With said recess registering with said slot; a presser member for depressing said locking means and for operating said slidable member, said presser member being normally inoperative to effect depression ot' said locking means, a coin deposited in said slot and passing into said recess being adapted to establish an operative connection between said operating means and said locking means for effecting depression ot said locking means and release ot said slidable member; a coin receiving chamber in the lower end portion ot said body, there being a coin admission opening leading to said chamber registerable with said coin recess in said slidable member; neans tor limiting the movement of said slidable member to ei'fect the depositof the coin therefrom into said last mentioned coin receiving slot When said slidable member is operated; registering disks having indicative characters on the peripheries thereoil for exposure at an eX- posure opening in said body; and means i'or automatically operating said registering disks to register the amount ot the coins deposited in the bank upon operation ot said slidable member, substantially described.
9. In a coin savings bank, a hollovv body having a plurality of coin admission slots adapted to permit ot the passage ot coins ot dierent pre-determined denominations; a slidable member having a plurality of recesses adapted for registration with said coin admission slots? resilient depressible means for locking` said slidable member in position with said recesses registering with said slots; a presser member for elfecting depression of said locking means and for operating said slidable member, said presser member being normally inoperative to ei'- fect depression of said locking means, a coin deposited in one of said slots and passing into one of said recesses being adapted to establish an operative connection betiveen said operating means and said locking means tor effecting depression of said locking means and release of said slidable member; a coin receiving chamber in the lower end portion of said body, there being a coin admission opening leading to said chamber registerable with said coin recesses in said slidable member; means for limiting the movement of said slidable member to etliect the deposit of a coin therefrom into said last mentioned coin admission slot When said slidable member is operated; and registering mechanism automatically operable upon operation of said slidable member to register the amount ot the coins deposited in the bank, substantially as described.
10. n a coin savings bank, a holloiv body having a coin admission slot; a slidable member having a recess adapted for registration vvith said coin admission slot; resilient depressible means for locking said slidable member in position with said recess registering with said slot; a presser member for depressing said locking means and for operating said slidable member, said presser member being normally inoperative to eifect vdepression ot said locking means, a coin deposited in said slot and passing into said recess being adapted to establish an operative connection between said operating means and said locking means for effecting depression oit said locking means and release of said slidable member; a coin receiving chamber in the lower end portion of said body, there being a coin admission opening leading to said chamber registerable with said coin recess in said slidable member; mea-ns for limiting the movement of said slidable member to el'iject the deposit of the coin therefrom into said last mentioned coin receiving` slot when said slidable member is operated; registering mechanism; means for automatically operating said registering mechanism to register the amount of the coins deposited in the bank upon operation of said slidable member; said last mentioned means being operative only during depression of said aforesaid locking means, substantially as described.

In a coin savings bank, a hollow body having a coin admission slot; a slidable member having a recess adapted for registration with said coin admission slot; resilient depressible means for locking said slidable member in position with said recess registering with said slot; a presser member for depressing said locking means and 'for operating said slidable member, said presser member being normally inoperative to ellect depression ot' said locking means, a coin deposited in said slot and passing into said recess being adapted to establish in operative connection between said operating means and said locking means for electing depression of said locking means and release of said slidable member; a coin receiving chamber in the lower end portion of said body, there being a coin admission opening leading to said chamber registerable with said coin recess in said slidable member; means for limiting the movement of said slidable member to effect the deposit of the coin therefrom into said last mentioned coin receiving slot when said slidable member is operated; registering mechanism; resilient depressible means for automatically operating said registering mechanism to register the amount of the coins deposited in the bank upon operation ol said slidable member; and an operative connection between said before mentioned locking means and said last mentioned means whereby the latter will be in operative position only when said locking means is in depressed position, substantially as described.

In a coin savings bank, a hollow body having a coin admission slot in its upper side; a slidable member having a recess adapted for registration with said coin admission slot; depressible means for locking said slidable member in position with said recess registering with said slot; a presser member for depressing said locking means and for operating said slidable member, said presser member being normally inoperative to effect depression of said locking means; a coin deposited in said slot and passing into said recess being adapted to establish an operative connection between said operating means and said locking means for eliecting depression of said locking means and release oi said slidable member; a coin receiving chamber in the lower end portion of said body, there being a coin admission opening leading to said chamber registerable with said coin recess in said slidable member; means for limiting the movement of said slidable member to effect the deposit of the coins therefrom into said last mentioned coin admission slot when said slidable member is operated; a door permitting of the removal oi said coins from said coin receiving chamber; a fastening for said door; and means for automatically operating said fastening for unlocking said door after a pre'determined number of operations of said slidable member, substantially as described.
