to take the place of putty or cement as a means of retaining a pane of glass in place in the sash bars. My invention is applicable to window frames with sash bars of any ordinary description, but it may very con- 'veniently be employed in connection with metal sash bars.
My invention consists of a'metal strip of L-shaped cross section with adjustable means for causing it to crowd a ainst or pinch the pane between itself and the moldin of the" sash bar at whatever point along t eedge of the pane the fastening device is placed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure I, isa plan view illustratin a portionof a sash with a pane held in p aceby the use ofmy improvement. Fig. II, is a partial sec-.
tion along the line H, II of Fi ..I, on an enlarged scale. Fig. III, isa sec ion along the line III, III, of Fig. II. Fig. IV, isa perspective view of my fastening device.
The fastening device consists of a metallic strip of convenient length and of L- shaped cross section. It may therefore be conveniently spoken of as comprising awall 1, and a flange 2. The wall 1, projects beyond the flange in the form of lugs 3, 4, 3. These may be either terminal lugs as shown at '3, 3, or intermediate lugs 4, conveniently interposed at intervals and formedby making a partial cut 5, at the inner corner of the flange and turning the expanded piece of metal down. in the wall 1. Pins 7, are passed through and secured within the tongues of the sash An inclined slot 6, is also cut bars at roper points orintervals where it IS desire to secure the fastening device.
In operation, the panes lO, are laid so as to rest against the inner edges of the moldingil, of the sash bar as usual. One of the fastening devices is then laid with its wall against the side ofthe tongue of the sash bar and with its flange pressing against the pane near its edge, the lugs 3, 4, 3, being inserted between the edge of the pane and the tongue of the sash bar. In this position the pin 7, enters the slot 6, in the wall of the fastening device and by driving the fastening device insuch direction as to cause the-pin to'press' against the inclined edgeof'the slot 6, which receives it, the re quired degree of pressure is exerted by the retaining device to hold the pane firmly in position a ainst the-inner surface of the moldingo the sash bar.
It is obvious that my device may be made of varying lengths as circumstances may dictate, and may be likewise spaced at any desired intervals along the edge of the pane.
For a small pane, ordinarily one will suiiice foreach ed? Having claim A. device for holding a pane within its sashbars, consisting of a metal strip of L- shaped cross'section, one wall of the same being provided with an inclined slot and e. hus described my invention, I
withlugs which project below the corner formed with the other wall, and a pin projecting from'the surface of the tongue of the sash bar and received within said inclined slot.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, this fourteenth day of June, 1911.
ELEAZAR T. WILKINSON.
