Description

W. w. MOKELVEYL' LADLE GAR.
APPLIGATION FILED APB.22, 1911.

I l fifi' iig.' .1 "A, mips.;-
'liillfw mit mag/'concerne l l Y el 't Beati-known 'that I, W1 mi W. nerim.- "t All'of' Youngstown, 'Mahoning' county, have-'invented-"a newfand useful Imilv'enientr in Batlle-Cars, ofwhich the fol- O j. lowin'g' is afull, clear, and-exact description, reference .being had to t-h accompanying drawings, forming part of tins specification,
liiWhi'Ch-mlfg -Jy f Fi 's an end viewof a ladle car emre 1'1 bodying my invention; and Fig.- 2 is'fa `similar view, largely diagrammatic, illustrating M the dumping movementof the ladle.
` My invention has relation to ladle or hot metal cars ofthe type which are emptied by pouring from thespout located at or near the ntofpofthel ladle., In cars of this character4 .'a's` lordinarily.constructed heretofore, when thegladlestipped vin the frame of the car there jis'faconsiderable drop to the spout in theipouring operation.v In order to bring '.vthefinal lposition of.4 the spout vin the proper relation tothe receptacle poured into, it has been necessaryjeither to allow considerable vv`2.'fallitolthemetal-'during the first part of the N pourii1g, orto lift the ladle from the car by vn ieans of an' overhead crane and place it in a tilting cradle so arranged as to give a vshofrteriiall tothe metal; or else2 to provide a' movable 'l trough which moves with the spout -on the lndle.- The first of .these expedients results in considerable loss, due to splashin,f r Aof' the inetal, and the other methods mentioned are subject to considerable[inconvenience and expense in the liandlingoperations. The object of my invention is to provide a ladlel arranged to tip to discharge its contents inthe novel manner hereinafter de- 4'0 scribed and whereby the objections above noted are overcome. s
ln the accompanying drawings, the numeral 2 designa-tes the frame and supporting 1 f wheels of aadle car, which may be in general of any usual or approved construction. '3 is the ladle having at each e'nd and below its horizontal center und at opposite sides of its vertical center, the two trunnions 4 and 5these trunnions being carried in open trunnion seats or recesses 6 in the end frames '2 of the car. The trunnions 4 and 5 are preferably parts of trunnion castings T, secured tothe ear. 8 and 9 designate 'two' otlierrtrunnions arranged near`the top of weasel A.application ieaaprn 22,1911f "seriaimffezziafa Speelman@ of Letters Patent. vPatented Mal-.26 1912 the ladleand' at opposite sides .f tlier'eoifi 1() designa-tes the lifting lugson the ladle to which the tipping means'are attaclied;`and
-11 is a. stand located at one side ofthe car in position to receive the trunn'ion V9. .The receptacle for receiving thefmetal pouredv from the ladle is indicated-mi2.
The stand l1 isformed with 'open top rest or bearing recess 13 for the trunnion 9.
In the operation of pouring into"f there,- ceptacle 12, the-ladleisiirsttilted upon` the trunnions 5 into a .positionA toybruigt-he trunnion 9 into theK bearing 13 vof the stand 11, as shown in Fig. 2. Any further lifting upon the lifting lug 10 causes' the,trunnion4 5 to lift entirely'out of its bearing 6, and the further tiltingr movement is wholly upon the trunnion 9, until the final position 4such as indicated is Fig. 2, is reached. i
The foregoing describes the voperation in` pouring into a receptacle located at the right-hand side ofthe car looking atthe drawing. In'pouring to the left, a suitable stand similar to the stand 11, will be pro-f vided at the left-hand side of the car, and the tilting operations will take place on the trunnions 4 and 48.
1 By the provision of means whereby the ladle is tipped partly upon the bearing or bearings supported by the car and partly,
upon a bearing or hearings supported indepcndently of the car, the drop in the' spoilt during the pouring operation is'xnaterially' lessened.
lt will, of course, lie obvious that'the ladle of points of support, either upon the car or upon the stand ll, and that various other may be provided with any desired number changes may be made in the details of construction and arrangement. ot the parts without departing from the spirit. and scope of my invention as jdetinodV in the appended claims.
What. l claim 1s:-q
l. A ladle car having a ladle providedwith a tiltable support on the carat one level, means on the ladle at a higher level to tiltably engage another support, and other means adapted to engage a tipping device independentl of theladle and car; silbstantially as described.
2. A ladle having a. lower support, a ear upon which said support has a normal bearing. another support near the top of the ear,A
" and a bearing for the last named support carried independently o the car; substantially as described.
3. A dumping car having a ladle pro-I vided with two sets of sup orts, and bearings therefor, whereby its umping or tipping movement 1s partly upon a bearing supported by the car and partly on.a bearin supported independently of the car; su stantlally as described.
,4i A dumping car provided with a plurality 'of open bearings, a ladle having a plurality of supports normally engaging said bearin s, and other supports at a higher for the upper support;v substantiallyas described. z n
6. A ladle car having a tilting ladlegsald .ladle having a plurality of bearings,togthe1 with a. fixed bearing-located adjacent to tht track on which the ear is arranged to move substantially as described.
7. A dumping car having aladlel provide 'with two sets of support-ing members, botl located to one side ofthe vertical center o: the car, and at different distancesthere from, and-at different vertical heights,l th car having bearings for one set of said mem bers, and a support for the other set of sait' members which is mounted independentl; of the car; substantiall' as described.
In testimony 'where f3; Ihave hereunto 'se my hand. I, f
W. W. MCKELVEY.
