Description
W. A. SCOTT. MEANS FOR ATTAOHING BINDING POSTS TO DRY BATTERIES.
APPLICATION FILED 00T.14,1911.
Patented Mar. 26, 1912.
zl/lorney U D STACEWENT oFFIcE;
WILLIAM A. SCOTT, 0F TACOMA, WASHINGTON.
MEANS FOR ATTACHING BINDING-POSTS TO DRY BATTERIES.
To an whomjt may'concern Be it known that I, VVILLIAM A. Soon, a citizeniof the United States, residing at Tacoma, in the county of Pierce and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Attachi'ngtBinding-Posts to Dry Batteries; and I do \hereby declare the following "to be ta full, clear, and exact description of.v the iiivention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and, use the same, reference being had to the iaccompanying drawings, and to-the lettors} of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this'specification.
. This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in means for attaching 3T0 this end and to such others as the invention may pertain, the same consists in ing drawing and then specifically defined in the appended claim. e The invention is clearly illustratedin the accompanying drawings which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of the upper end of a dry battery casing with my device applied thereto. Fig.
2 isanenlarged perspective view of the binding' post detached. Fig. 3 is a central vertical section taken through the binding post attached, and Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail. in perspective showing the locking flan e which receives the upper edge of the casing to which the post is attached.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed October 14, 1911. Serial No. 654,779.
Patented Mar. 26, 1912.
Reference now beinghad to the details of the drawings by letter, A represents a dry battery casing of o dinary construction and B my improved p'o attached thereto. The post B has its lower portion bifurcated and leading from the inner Wall of the bifurcation upon one'side thereof is a curved recess Cu Above the bifurcated lower portion of the binding post the usual shoulder D and screw-threaded extension or post E is provided and the wire, when connected with the post, is seated upon the shoulder D and clamped between said shoulder and the loweredge of the binding screw E as is common in attaching wires to battery cases. I
In attaching the post to'the edge of the battery case, the slotted lower end of the post is fitted over the upper edge of the easing to which it is to be attached and, by one or two blows imparted by a hammer to the upper screw-threaded end of the post, the" upper edge of the casing is cut away and caused to enter the recess 0 and is'bent-or clamped within the recess, thus securing the post to the casing. If "desired, the post,.
when thus clamped in position to the edge of the casing, may be reinforced by use of solder as will be readily understood.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim to be new and desire to 4 secure by Letters Patent is 2" In combination with a wall of the casing having a portion of its marginal edge bent to form a laterally extending. and curvedportion, a binding post having a shank portion with a longitudinal'head formed in its lower end and terminating in its inner.
end in a widened portion, the marginal outline of which is concaved to conform to the 7 said, curved portion, which is adapted to engage the inner end of the recess, as set forth. l
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my I signature in the presence of two witnesses.
I WILLIAM A. SCOTT. Witnesses:
W. D. LAM'BUTH, B. L. LAMBUTH.
