Description

P. RENNER.
KNIFE GUARD.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 29, 1911.
Patented Mar. 12, 1912.
%Wneooeo ff PHILIP RENNER, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
KNIFE-GUARD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 29, 1911.
Patented Mar. 12, 1912.
Serial No. 635,957.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, linmr RnNNnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knife-Guards, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in knife guards.
()ne of its objects is to provide a guard for butcher or silnilar knives which will serve to prevent the blade slipping or being forced into or through the operators hand, and which will not be objectionable by reason of being in the way of the operator, or the operations required of the knives.
Another object is to provide a guard which can be readily and firmly attached to the knives either in course of manufacture or subsequently, and to provide an improved guard and means of attachment.
My invention further consists in certain details of form, combination and arrangement, all of which will be more fully set forth in the description of the accompanying drawings, in which;
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a butcher knife embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional detail on line 2 .2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective view of the guard detached. Fig. 4 is an enlarged end elevation of the guard detachecl.
Butcher knives require long blades to reach from the exterior of the article to be out to the point where the cut is to be made, and handles on which a firm grasp may be had to transmit power to the forward end of the knife effectively. They are also to be held in several different positions, and by reason of the knife handle and hand of the operator being ordinarily wet and greasy, the knives are difficult to hold, and it frequently happens from various causes, as for instance striking the point of the knife against an unyielding object, that the knife handle is forced backwardly through the operators hand and the blade into or through the hand causing serious cuts and injury. In order to prevent such cuts and injury, and to assist in holding and applying the knife without interfering with its efficiency, I provide a knife guard attached to the shank of the blade and the forward end of the handle and preferably slightly in rear of the heel of the knife blade, with novel means for attaching and supporting the same, and of a form not liable to interfere with the usual operations of the knife.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, A represents a butchers knife of usual ctmstruction having a strong firm handle formed by securing by rivets 2 or otherwise two sections of wood 3 or similar material to the shank l of the knife blade, and upon opposite sides thereof. The edges of these sections 3 a 'e usually rounded or beveled as illustrated.
.My improved guard comprises a projecting spur or section B with an integral slotted shank the members (3 and 7 of which are adapted to seat in recesses 5 formed on the inner faces 0' at the forward ends of the handle sections 3, and to closely fit opposite sides of the shank a of the knife blade, said members 8, 1, 6 and 7 being pierced to receive the rivets S by means of which said parts are firmly locked together. The base of the projection B is wider than the projecting portion thereof, and provided with shoulders or abutting faces 9 to closely fit and bear against the edges of the handle sections 3 to give additional support to the member B.
The main or projecting portion of the member B isnarrow enough to enter the slit formed in cutting the meat, and does not project sufficiently to catch upon adjacent objects or the meat, or to interfere with the operation of the knife. \Vhen attached during the course of manufacture, the members 6 and 7 may be seated in cross recesses in the handle sections 3 formed a short distance from the ends thereof, but when attached to knives after completion, saw cuts or similar recesses from the forward ends of the sections 3 and deep enough to receive said members (i and 7 may be made without detaching the sections 8, thus enabling the guard to be readily attached to knives in use as well as to those in course of manufacture.
The member B projects sufficiently and is adapted to bear against the fore finger or the little finger of the operator or the edge of the palm of the hand according to the manner in which the knife is held, and to prevent the knife being forced backwardly through the hand so as to bring the blade into contact with the fingers or hand should the point encounter a resisting object, or from any other cause.
The structure herein illustrated and de scribed is capable of considerable modification Without departing from the principle 1 of my invention. 5
Having described my invention, What I claim is:
In combination with a knife comprising f a handle, blade and a blade shank extend- 1 ing into the handle, a knife guard compris- I ing a spur member and a bifurcated shank member, said handle provided With recesses on opposite sides of the blade shank to receive the bifurcations of said guard shank, and means for securing the guard shanks in the handle.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
