To all-whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Armani) J. Jones, a citizen of the United States, residing at New'Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and and useful Railroad Track-Scale, of which the following is a specification.
The inventionrelates to improvements in platform scales.
I The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of platform scales, more especially railroadtrack scales, and to simplify and increase the strength and durability of the same, and to enable a single pair of relatively long platform levers to sustain the entire weight of the platform or track sections and the load'to be weighed, and also to provide,bearing and fulcrum pivots of any desired length and strength for the said levers.
A- further object, of theinvention is to provide a railroad track scales of this character, adapted to permit an adjustment of the. pivots in determining the multiplication of the platform levers and .in which the pivots will be permanently fixed after the multiplication of the levers has been determined, so that there can be no change of multiplication except through wear of the,
pivot or the grinding ofthe edges thereof, whereby it Will be impossible in weighing 0 erations to fraudulently manipulate the scales.
Another object of the invention is to provide railroad track scales of this character in which the pivot-fulcrum bearings will be suspended for permitting an oscillation or vibration of the platform or track section, so that cars may be run onto and off of the same withoutinjuring the scales or affecting the accuracy of the same.

The platform bearing 44e'has a reduced lower portion inthe lower face of which is the bearing recess 43, and the said platform bearing is cross sectionally tapered andprovided at the top with side flanges 45, having slots 46 for the reception of bolts 47, which secure the platform bearing to the transverse I-beam 48. The slots and bolts permit an adjustment of the platform bearing for alining and properly positioning the same. The bearing and fulcrum pivot holders or supports, the bearing stand and strength is thereby obtained.

Since the point pivots are fixed with relation to the lever and the adjustment is obtained only through the fulcrum and bearing pivots, it will be lllll'NlSSlblt. to change the latter withi;ut taking down the scale.
The pl'atftirm -2, which is in the form of a track sectiomis mounted upon girders l9 of steel. or other suitable material, extending longitudinally of the platform and located beneath the same and equipped at their ends with suspension frames 50. The suspension frames 50, which are disposed transversely of the platform, are located at the end portions thereof'and may consist of a. horizontal top bar 51 and depending arms arranged in pairsrat opposite sides of the ends of the bar 51, which is secured by bolts or other suitable fastening devices to the bottom flanges of the longitudinal girders 49. The horizontal top bar 51 enables a plurality of the longitudinal girders to be mounted upon it, and although only two girders are illustrated in Fig. 3 crane drawings, the number may be increased if desired. Instead, however, of employing suspension frames of a length toextnd entirely across the platform, spaced corner suspension frames 54, similar to that illustrated in Fig. 9 of the drawings, may be used. The corner suspension frames are designed to be arranged in pairs vat the ends of the platform and are provided at the top with attaching flanges 54, which are bolted or otl'ierwisesecured to the side girders. The said corner frames are also provided with a pair ofjarms arranged similar to those of the suspension frame 51. The pairs of depending arms of the suspension frames are located at opposite sides of the platform bearing, and are connected at their 'loWer ends by parallel bottom bars 55, which are suspended by links 56 and 57 from cross bars 58 The parallel side bars 55 are disposed transversely witl relation to the platform, and they extend he entire length of the suspension frame, as clearly illiistiated in Fig. 3 ofthe drawings. The links 56 and 57 are arranged in pairs, the lower links 56 receiving the parallel horizontal bottom bars of the suspension frame and fitted in bottom bearing grooves'or recesses 58 thereof. The upper links 57, which are. ar-' ranged at right angles to the lower links, are linked into the samc,'an,d they are arranged upon the cross bars 58, which extend through the upper links. 'The cross bars 5h which are horizontal, are secured by bolts 59 to the upper flanges of the beam 48 of the platforn'i.bearing, and the said cross bars 58 project laterally from the beam and their terminals extend'into the space between the depending arms of the suspension frame, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 5 of the drawings. The mounting of the platform in this mannerenables the same. to swing both longitudinally and latcrady to yield to the ars and vibrations incident to running cars onto and oil of the platform, whereby the scale may be subjected to such jars and vibrations with out liability of excessively wearing or otherwise injuring the bearings or affecting the accuracy of the same.
The inner point pivots 12 are arranged in bearings 60 of loops G1, which are connected by linlis G3 to a rod 64, suspended from a shelf lever 65 of the ordinary construction.
.The shelf lever is connected by a rod 66 with a weighing beam 67, constructed and mounted in the ordinary manner, as indicated in Fi 1 of the drawings. As the particular construction of the weighing lever and the means for connecting the same with the platform levers do not constitute a por tion of the prgsent improvement, and as any form of weighing beam and connections may be employed, further description and illustration thereof are deemed unnecessary. Having thus fully described myinvention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A scale of the class described including a platform, a pair of platform levers located beneath the platform and extending from the outer endsthereof to the center of the scale and provided at their inner ends with fixed point. pivots, fulcrum and bearing pivots secured to the outer portions of the platform levers and having a preliminary ustment through their fastening means, which rigidly-and permanently secure the said pivots to the platform levers after such preliminary adjustment, bearing stands receiving the fulcrum pivots of the levers, and bearings supporting the platform and mounted up onthe'bearing pivots of the levers. A scale of the class described including a platform, platform levers located beneath the platform and extending from the outer ends thereof to the central portion of the scale, fulcrum pivot holders arranged at the outer ends of the levers, bearing pivot holders arranged at points intermediate of the ends ofthe levers, fastenin means securing the said holders to the levers and permitting a preliminary adjustment of the same and rigidly securing the holders in their adjustment, fulcrum and bearing pivots carried by the said holders, bearing stands receiving the fulcrum pivots, platform bearings sup porting the platform and mounted upon the bearing pivots, a weighing beam, and means for connecting the inner ends of the levers with the weighing beam.

A scale of the class described including a platform,- levers located beneath the plat" form and extending from the outer end. thereof to the center of the scale and each comprising a longitudinal. beam, a brace connected at an intermediate point with the longitudinal beam and having-its outer portion arran ed in parallelism with the thereof to the center of the scale and each comprising a longitudinal beam, a brace connected at an intermediate point with the longitudinal beam and having its outer portion arranged in parallelism with the outer portion of the beam, inner and outer transverse struts connected tothe outer portion,
of the: brace and the said beam, fulcrum and bearing pivot holders provided with slots or openings and having fastening means operating in the slots or openings and ad justably securing the pivot holders to the said struts, fulcrum and bearingpivots carried by the .said holders, bearing stands receiving the fulcrum pivots, and platform bearings supporting the platform and mounted upon the bearing pivots.
5. A. scale of the class described includ' ing a platform, levers located beneath the platform and extending from the outer ends thereof to the center of the scale, and each comprising. a longitudinal beam, a'brac secured to the beam-at a point intermediate of the ends thereof and having an outer portion arranged in parallelism With and spaced from the outer portion of the beam, a-transverse beam extendingflaterally from the inner endof' each longitudinalbeam, inner longitudinally disposed terminals carried by the transverse beimsUinner and outer transverse struts connecting the brace and the longitudinal beam, fulcrum pivots secured to the outer struts, bearing pivots mounted upon the inner struts, bearing stands receiving the fulcrum pivots, and platform bearings supporting the platform and mounted upon the bearing pivots.
6. A scale of the class described includ ing a platform, levers located beneath and extending from the outer ends of the platform to the center of the scale, and each comprising a longitudinal beam, an outer brace consisting of a diagonally arranged portion connected to the longitudinal beam,
and a longitudinal portion arranged in parallelism 'ith the. outer portion of the beam, a transverse beam extending laterally from the mncr end of the longitudinal beam, an
inner diagonal brace connecting the trans verse and iongitudinabeams, and inner and, outer transverse struts connecting the.
struts, fulcrum and bearing pivots carried by the said holders, bearing stands receiving the fulcrum pivots, and platform bearings mounted upon the bearing pivots and supporting the platform. Y 7. A scale of the class described including a platform, levers located beneath the platform and fulcrumed at their outer ends, bearing pivot holders mounted upon the levers and provided with knife edge pivots and having walls surrounding the same and forming lubricant receptacles, and platform bearings supporting the plat-form and having portions extending into the receptacles of the supports and provided with recesses receiving the pivots.
8. In a scale of the class described, thecombination with a platform,of a platformlever arranged beneath the platform and having spaced portions located at opposite sides of the scale, means for fulcruming the outer end of the lever, a bearing pivot holder extending across the space between the said portions of the lever and provided with a knife'ed'ge pivot and having side and end walls extending above the pivot to form a lubricant receptacle, and a plat form bearing supporting the platform and extending across the same and having a lower POI'UOII'IIIOUHtGd'UPOD thesald knife edge pivot and arranged within the said receptacle.
9. In a'scale of the class described, the
combination with a platform, of a lever lo-' cated beneath the same and having spaced portions arranged at'opposite sides of the the platform and having a reduced portion projecting into the lubricantzreceptacle and to the platform bearing, and means for conmounted upon the knife edge pivot.
10. In a scale of the class described, the combination with a platform, of a lever located beneath the platform and having spaced portions, means for fulcruming the outer end of the lever, a beam connecting the spaced portions, a bearing pivot holdermounted upon the said beam and extending across the leve r, a knife edge pivotextending longitudinally of the said holder and Se cured to the same, a plat-form bearing also' extending across the lever and mounted upon the bearing pivot, a transverse beam secured necting the platform with the last-mentioned beam.

combination. with 'a platform, of a lever located beneath the platform and having spaced portions, means for fulcruming the outer end of the lever, a beam connecting the spaced'portions, a bearing pivotholder mounted upon the said beam and extending across the lover, a knife edge pivot extending longitudinally of the said holder and secured to the same, a platform bearing also extending across the lever and mounted upon the bearing pivot, a transverse beam secured totherplatform bearing, a cross bar secured to and projecting beyond the lastmentioned beam, and links arranged upon the projecting ends of the cross bar and connecting the platform with the beam.

combination with a platform, of a lever, means for fulcruming the lever, a bearing pivot carried by the lever,-.a platform bearing mounted upon the pivot, a cross bar carried by the said bearing and having projecting portions, -.1i suspension frame secured to the platform and extending below the cross bar, and links connecting the projecting portionsof the cross bar with the lower port-ions of -the suspension frame.

In a scale of the class described, the combination with a platform, of lever lo- ?ated beneath the platform and provided With spaced portions arranged at opposite sides of the platform, a transverse beam connecting the spaced portions, means for tulernming the lover, a hearing pivot holder secured to the said beam an extending across the space between the portions of the lever and provided with knife edge pivot, platform bearing also extending across the lever and supported uponthe said: pivot, a transverse beam secured to the platform bearing and having laterally project means, a suspensionframe secured to the platform and provided with arms arranged in pairs and located at opposite sides of the said projecting means and extending below the same, and links connecting the project leg means With the lower ends of th. arms.

In a scale of the class described, the combination of a platform, a lever having a fulcri'in'i piv t a hearing stand receiving the fulcrum pivot, a seam supporting the hearing stand, supports provided with vertical adjusting screws, links connecting the adjusting screws with the heain for leveling the scale, and means for mounting tl a plat;- form on the lever.
