Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 18, 1911.
Patented net; 2?, 1912.
Serial No. 644,759.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT MAKoWsKI, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in- Spirit-Levels; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full,
' the engagement of the fingers ofthe lamp with the bracket.
This invention relates to an improvement in spirit levels such ascommonly used by carpenters and masons, and which usually consist of a rectangular block or frame with a bubble tube in one edge for use horizontally, and a bubble tube arranged in an opening in the body of the block for vertical use. As these levels are frequently used in dark, places, it is desirable to illuminate the bubbles; and the object of this invention is to provide simple means whereby an electric light may be conveniently detachably connected with the level in position to illuminate either bubble; and the invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claim. In carrying out my invention I employ the .usual level block 2 having a bubbletube 3 arranged in the edge a, and with the usual side opening 5 in which is a second bubble tube 6. The edges-of. the block adjacent to the bubble tube 3Iare usually cut away to allow light to reach the bubble tube, and in one side of the block adjacent to the lightopening 7 I attach a bracket 8 which is Fig. 2 a side View of the same.
formed with two outwardly projecting arms 9, 10, the inner faces of which are formed with recesses 11, and the face of the bracket betweenthe arms has an inclined wall 12 'for the purpose as will hereinafter appear.
In addition to placing the bracket adjacent to the bubble tube 3 I preferably locate one of these brackets on. each side of the; block adjacent to the bubble tube 6. In connection with a bracket thus described, I employ a small electric lamp 13 which is substantially like a pocket lamp, which has a push button 14 in one side by which the circuit through the batteries inclosed in. the case is closed. Attached tothis lamp casing 1301. opposite sides are spring fingers 15 and 16 which project beyond the end ofthe casing, thence inward and outward, and each carries a pin or projection 17 which engage with the notches 11 in the bracket. The outer ends of the fingers 15 and 16 have angular edges 18 which co-act with the beveled wall 12 of the bracket and in such a way'as to cause the ends of the fingers to interlock with the bracket. y
To attach the light to the levelthe fingers are crowded together and the pins 17 entered into the recesses 11 and the lamp will stand at an angle to the body of the level so as to throw light from the bulb, 19* on the bubble tube. To lightthe lamp it is only necessary to move it slightly to one-side so as to cause the finger 15 to crowd the push button 14 inward, and when moved to this position the friction of the ends of the fingers on the bracket will cause the lamp to' maintain thisclosed position so as tomaintain the light.- When not required, the simple n ment of the lamp'm theopposite direction will release the tension of the fingers with relation to thebracket and allowthe finger 15 to move away from the push button 14 to such an extent as to break connection through the lamp. For convenience one endof the body 2 will be formed with a recess or pocket 20 to. receive the lamp and this pocket may .be closed by a cover 21. When not required for use the'il'amp will remain in the pocket from which it can be" tric lamp provided with fingers detachably 10 conveniently removed and connected with connected with said bracket.
