To all whom 'it may concern. drawal of the work from between the clamp- Be it known that I, ADOLPH L. DE 'LEEUW, ing jaws, and effecting the final clamp or rea citizen of the United States, residing at ease. by mechanism operated under fluid amilton, in the county of Butler and State pressure for quick manipulation of the of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vises, of which the following is a specification.
y invention relates to a fluid-actuated device for moving one of the jaws for clam ing the work, whereby a powerful clamp can e conveniently and quickly made or released.
The object a device with vise. This is especially desirable when the vise is used for holding work on the maof pieces of work.

represents an adjusting screw, one end of which is provided witha flange 7, seating within a groove formed in the movable jaw 4, forming a revoluble connection therewith. The adjusting screw 5 is provided with a nut 8, supported Within a bearing 9, and held against rotation by means of the set screw 10 engaging into an elongated slot 11, formed on the nut 8, this set screw holding the nut against rotation, but permitting the longitudinal movement thereof within its bearings.
12, 13, represent cylinders ame 1, each provided with a fluid port 14, and an intermediate port 15, leading from one cylinder to the other, see Fig. 6, for equalizing the fluid pressure within the cylinders.
16, 17, represent pistons fitted within the respective cvlinders 12, 13, said pistons be ing preferably of hollow formation, p vided with the cap-plates 18, for closing the outer end of sai of my invention a fixed and movable jaw,
along a parallel support w1th a manually pistons in line with an actuating lever for moving the screw and jaw independent of t e manual control for effecting a final clamp or release.
The features of my invention are more fully set forth in the description of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of t is specification, in which igure 1 is a side elevation of my improved device. Fig. 2 is a central vertical sectionthrough the same and through one of the cylinders. Fig. 3 is an enlarged section on line :2, a:, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a front elevation thereof. Fig. 5 is a section on line w, w, Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a section on line 0), '0, Fig. 2.
As illustrated in the drawings, the vise is applicable to be screwed on the moving carriage or table of a machine tool for clamping the work in position.
One of the characteristics of the vise is to provide means for manually adjusting a movable jaw for initially setting the same relatively to the work to be clamped, and to a position to permit a free insertion or withformed in the cars 20, projecting from the frame 1, and provided with spherical bosses, adapted to engage a flange 21, formed on the nut 8, upon each side of the adjusting screw 5.
22 represents the bolts with their stems each projected through chine tool in finishing a duplicate number the lever 19. The bolts 22 are preferably relative to the fixed jaw, and means engagprovided with spherical heads each engaging said nut to impart longitudinal moveing its respective head-plate 18, forming a ment thereto and to the screw and movable pivotal engagement therewith, to aiford jaw for clamping movements.
