MIKE VITOSZKI, OF JOHNSTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-FOURTH TO J' ANOS TOMASOWSKI AND ONE-FOURTH TO MIHALJ MAKBANVEY, BOTH OF JOHNS- TOWN, PENNSYLVANIA.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MIKE VIToszKI, a sub` ject of the King of Hungary, residing at Johnstown, in the county of Cambria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trunks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to trunks, and the object of my invention is to provide a trunk that can be folded or collapsed, whereby the trunk will occupy a comparatively small space when not in use.
lith the above and other objects in view the invention resides in a novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawings wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in whichz Figure 1 is a perspective view of thetrunk with the lid thereof in an open position. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the trunk with the lid thereof closed. Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view of the same. Fig. 4 is an enlarged horizontal sectional view of a portion of a trunk showing the toggle brace between the side and end walls. Fig. 5 is an enlarged transverse vertical sectional view through the trunk adjacent one corner thereof, showing the toggle brace in elevation. Fig. 6 is a bottom plan of a detached lid. Fig. 7 is a cross sectional view of the same. Fig. 8 is an enlarged elevation of the hinges of the lid. Fig. 9 is a cross sectional vieW of the same on the line m-w of Fig. 8.
The reference numeral 1 denotes the bottom of the trunk having the exposed or under side thereof covered by a sheet of metal 2, and the ends and longitudinal edges of the metallic sheet are bent upwardly to engage the vertical edges of the bottom 1 and bent inwardly upon the bottom to provide flanges 3.
4 denotes angle bars carried by the end walls 5, rear wall 6, and front wall 7 of the trunk body, the vertical flanges of said angle bars being secured to the said walls, and the horizontal anges of the angle bars being received between the flanges 3 and the bottom 1, thereby detachably securingA said Specification of Letters Patent.

walls at their lower edges to the bottom 1. An exterior covering 8, preferably made of sheet metal, is provided for the walls of said trunk body.
9 denotes lock plates secured to the inner sides of the walls 6 and 7 at the lower edges thereof adjacent the ends of said walls, said plates having openings 10 to receive the ends of catches 11, slidably retained in engagement with the end walls 5 by screws or other fastening means 12, extending through slots 13 provided therefor in said catches.
The inner faces of the walls 5, 6 and 7, ad jacent to the upper edges thereof and adjalcent to the ends of said walls, are provided with sockets 14 and surrounding these sockets are countersunk plates 15, having openings 16 registering with the sockets 14.-
Adapted to engage in the openings 1G and the sockets 14 are toggle braces, comprising members 17 and 18, having the ends thereof reduced to provide tongues 19, adapted to engage in the openings 16 and the sockets 14, said tongues being disposed at an angle to said members. The member 18 is slidably retained in engagement with the member 17 by a screw 20, extending through a slot 21, provided therefor in the member 18. The inner end of the member 18 is pivotally connected, as at 22, to a lever 23, pivotallymounted upon the member 17, as at 24. At the free end of the lever 23 is a lip 25 which engages under t-he member17, and retains the members 17 and 18 in longitudinal alinement with the tongues 19 in engagement with the walls 5, 6 and 7. The toggle braces perform the dual function of acting as braces for the walls and also as a support for the tray hereinafter described.
26 denotes the top of a lid and the outer side of this lid is covered by a metallic sheet 27, providing flanges 28, similar to the bottom 1 of the trunk. Adapted to engage under these flanges are angle bars 29 carried by the side walls 30 and 31, and the end walls 32 of the lid. The end walls 32 have the lower edges thereof provided with slidable catches 33 adapted to engage in the top 26 of the lid, and with slidable catches 34 adapted to engage in the side walls 30 and 31. The catches 33 and 34 are similar to the catches 11.
35 denotes a hinge member carried by the side Wall 31 of the lid and this member has a longitudinally extending pintle 36, and
adapted to engage this pintle is a hinge member 3T carried by the rear Wall 6 of the trunk. The members and 37 are 4located adjacent to one end of the trunk, and at the opposite end of the trunk are hinge members 38 and 39, the latter having a pintie 40 adapted to engage in the member 38.
The member 39 has an elongated leaf 42a which is provided with a slot 42 through which extends a pin or screw 43 Which carries tixedly secured on its outer end, a cover plate 4l concealing the leaf of the hingemember and the slot therein. If non', when the lid of the trunk is open, the said lid be moved to the left (Fig. 8), hinge- meinbers 35, 38 and 39 will be carried therewith pin 43 riding in slot 42 of leaf 42a. This movement Will carry pintle 3G out of the eye of hinge-member 3T, although pintle 40 will still be engaged in the eye of hingemember 38. Movement of the lid to the right however, after disengagement of hinge-members 35 and 37, will slide hingemember 38 off pintle 40 and the lid is wholly disconnected from the trunk. The latter is then folded by loosening the various fastening-devices which hold the walls in the built up form. In reattaching the lid to the trunkj the pintle 3G is inserted in the eye of hinge-member 37 and 35) may then be pushed up by hand to engage pintle 4() in the eye of hinge-member 38. As the leaf 42a has a frictional engagement ivith the cover plate 4l, danger of the hinge-members separating and thus permitting the lid to become detached by the ordinary opening and closing of the same is obviated.
44 denotes a lock carried by the Wall 30 of the lid and adapted to cooperate with the lock in an escutcheon plate 45 carried by the front Wall 7 of the trunk, for retaining the lid in a closed position. Besides this .lock the trunk has clasps 4G and handles 4T.
A tray is provided for the upper portion of the trunk, and is supported on the toggle braces of the side and end Walls. This tray as shown comprises a bottom 48, hinged side Walls and 53, hinged end Walls and 56, a partition GI hinged to the bottom 487 and which partition, together with Walls 50, 53 and. 5G forms a compartment G5 for which there is provided a cover or lid 64 that is hinged to the rear wall 50 of the tray.
It is thought that the operation of assembling and disassembling the various parts of the trunk will be apparent Without further description, and While in the drawings there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such changes as fall within the scope of the appended claim.
That I claim is A folding trunk comprising a bottom. side Walls, and end walls, a metal covering for said bottom having the ends and longitudinal edges folded over onto the bottom to provide flanges, angle bars carried by the side and end Walls and having their longitudinal flanges received under the flanges of said metal covering, sliding latches carried by the end Walls to engage with the side Walls at the ends of latter, said end Walls having sockets in the inner faces thereof adjacent the ends of the Walls.y toggle levers having their free ends received in said sockets, said toggle levers extending at an acute angle with respect to the trunk Walls and acting both as braces for the Walls andas tray supports, and a lid detachably-connected to the rear wall of said trunk.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
vvMIKE VITOSZKI.
