MOVING ADVERTISEMENT DEVICE. I
' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 16, 1912.
Application led December 6, 1910. Serial No. 595,872.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDITH L. NrLns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Moving Advertisement' Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to moving advertising devices, particularly those adapted to be displayed 'in show windows.
The art of advertising consists first in arresting the attention of the public long enough to secure consideration ofthe article offered, and second, in fixing the article in mind by something pertinent and distinctive. Tol accomplish these objects, novelties of all sorts are constantly being devised.
My invention provides means for displaying advertising in a peculiarly novel and effective manner. A number of panels (all but the upper and lower ones of which should have openings). arranged one above another, are so attac' ed to each other through the medium of supporting tapes, as to cause some panels to appear to change position when the top panel is rotated a onehalf turn in theproper direction. This rotation of the top or controlling panel causes each of the others to reverse and turn upside down, and the successive tumblings of the panels keeps the attention engaged, while giving the panels the appearance of falling. The panels do not change their relative position, butthe tapes and whatever is attached to them, do change position, so that through the opening of a given panel, another symbol attached to the tapes will show, when the position of the controlling panel is changed. As some tapes and the 4attached puppets go up, and others go down, the effect is especially confusing, for all panels seem to be falling. Such change, of position will arouse the curiosity of those who' see it operate, and cause the advertisement it bears to be discussed and hence the article advertised to .become fixed in the mind and familiari'zed. l
It will be apparent that an infinite variety of novel and artistic ycombination may be produced with this device, by which it can be adapted to 'a wide range of advertising.
My invention is illustrated in its preferred form in the accompanying drawing in which:-
Figure 1 is a front view of the device in the first position. Fig. 2 is'a side or edge view showing the relation and connection of the first or principal set of the flexible bands to the several panels in the first position. Fig. 3 is a side or edge view of the device omitting the first mentioned set of connecting bands and showing the relation and connection of the second or auxiliary set of bands to the panels in said first position. Fig. 4 is a front view of the device in the second position. Fig. 5 is a side or edge view of the device showing the connection and relation of the rst'or main set of bands 6 is a side or edge view of the device omitting the first set of bands and showing the connection and relation of the second or auxiliary bands in said second position.
Referring now tothe drawings, the panels are severally designated by the letters iA, B, C, D, E, F,.in'series as appearing in the series relation shown in the normal or'first position.
The first or initial panel A, is preferablv solid and provided with lateral trunnions a in the central horizontal axis, carried in suitable bearings upon a supporting frame not shown except by the cross sectioned parts of arms al (Fig. l). A hand crank, a2 or other means of giving the panel A, a semi-rotation, is attached to one or both of said trunnions. Suspended in. succession from and beneath the initial panel A, are the succeeding panels, B, C, D, E, F, in series, being held connected and suspended by two sets of flexible bands presently to be described. The said "suspended panels last open interior spaces, and the front and rear faces of all the panels may be pictorially ornamented in a lmanner to suggest or illustrate the virtues or uses of the matter or thing advertlsed, or otherwise decorated as desired.
The first or principal set of flexible bands,
employed .in pairs, are preferably placed near to the outer edges of the panels, while the second or auxiliary set of bands similarly employed in pairs, are arranged nearer the central portions of the panels. The fastening of both sets to the upper or lower horizontal edges of the panels is preferably named, are rectangular frames with entirely made in the center plane of the materialas for example'by insertion of the endsbetween two thin 'slabs or sheets of material cemented together with the ends of the bands held between and projecting from the edge. of the panel thus constituted. The flexible bands, thus employed indistinct sets, are arranged and connected as follows, considered as in the first or normal position p connects the top of panel A and extending behind the same, with the top of panel B. The second pair, 52,52, connects the bottom o f panel A with the bottom of panel B, ex-
'f tending behind the latter. The third pair,
53, 58, connects the top of panel C, and extending behind the same with the ltop of panel, D. The fourth pair, 54, 54, connects. ,thebottom of panel C,'and extending -behind the same, with the bottom of panel D.-
- The fifth pair, 5, 55, connects the top of panel E, and extending behind the same,
with the top of panel F. The sixth pair, 56, 5, connects the bottom of panel E with the bottom of panel F. In the same (first) Vpo sition, the corresponding auxiliary bands, c passing in front of the panels, connect them as follows: (1) top of B'to top of`C;' (2) bottom of B to bottom of C; (3) top of D to top oiE; (4) bottom of D to bottom of E; with strips d1, d2, across F serving no purpose of connection. When the initial panel is given a semi-rotation'so 4as to bring the parts intovthe second position as shown in Figs. 4, 5 and 6, the suspended panels retain their series relation, but are turned upside down, 'presenting their rear faces to the front, .while the successivepanels are held by the same relative connections, yet the sevries relation of the principal bands will be 52, 51, 5, 53, 56,55; and that ,of the auxiliary bands will be c2, 010, as. The auxiliary bands are utilized for the display of efgies, h,- of any. attractive or amusing kind attached thereto. As shown in Fig. .1, in the successive sets of bands, the elements of each pair are placed. alternately near together and farther apart, so that the nearer bands may hold a single figure, andthose farther As already stated, Fig. 1 'exhibits' the de-v vice in its normal position; but on giving the initialor'top panel A a semi-rotation, carrying its top edge backward, the panel B will tumble forward, panel C backward, panel D forward, etc., in succession, one after another, but at the conclusion of the movement the panels Will present their opposite faces to the front, but in the same series order, while the eiiigies, each retaining its upright relation to its panel, will be varied in relative positions in series, as shown in Fig. 4, in which they show through the openings of the panels as if in picture frames. The novelty and perplexing character of this inter-movement, which appears to the eye of the observer as if the entire apparatus was falling to pieces like a house o cards, distracts attention from the Aeiigies, so that their new series relation, and
new position relative to the panels, makes them appear as an entirely new set of figures. The effect is novel and striking, and is calculated to excite surprise and wonder, and holdl the attention of the beholder, through the natural curiosity excited to account for the surprising changes observed but not readily understood.
I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States l v 1. A display advertising device consisting of an initial or master panel, a pluralityof open frame panels, two `sets of flexible bands, inter-connecting the said panels, hone set crossing the open spaces of the panels and a series of eiligies ordisplay symbols attached to the said set of bands. i
2. The combination of a seriesof panelsall except the first being open frames; two sets of iexible bands'inter-conne'cting the same, one set crossin the open spaces of the panels and a series o display figures or symbols attached to the said set of said bands,- the connection of the bands and. panels being such that upon reversing the first panel, the succeeding panels reverse, and the figures or symbols assume a differentseries relation to the panels. p In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribingA witnesses.
