To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J osnrn Pour, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curtain-Poles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to curtain poles, and the primary object of my invention is the provision of simple and effective means for retaining the upper ends of curtains in engagement with a pole without resorting to the use of pins or rings.

Another object of this invention is to'provide a pole with a hinged section and novel means for retaining the section in a closed position with curtains between said sections.

A further object of this invention is to provide an ornamental and durable pole that can be manufactured at a comparatively small cost.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.

Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective View of the pole showing the hinged section thereof open, Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of a portion of the pole, showing a portion of the hinged section thereof in plan, Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional View of a portion of the pole, showing the lock for the hinged section of said pole, Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view taken on the line IV-IV of Fig. 3, Fig. 5 is a similar view taken on the line VV of Fig. 3, and Fig. 6 is a similar View taken on the line VIVI of Fig. 3.

A pole in accordance with this invention is preferably made of wood and is octagonal throughout its length. The pole comprises a main section 1 and a hinged section 2, said sections having flat confronting faces thereof provided with oblong pockets 4 for pieces of felt 5. The pieces of felt are adapted to frictionally engage the upper ends of ourtains and retain said curtains between the sections 1 and 2, when the section 2 is in a closed position and locked relatively to the section 1. One end of the section 1 has an ornamental head 6 and this end of the section is provided with a horizontal slot 7. Pivotally mounted in said slot by a pin 8 is a flat tongue 9 carried by one end of the section 2. The tongue 9 is shaped whereby when the section 2 is closed, the end of the pole will have an ornamental appearance.

The end of the section 1 is enlarged, as at 10 and provided with a bore 11. Arranged within thebore 11 is a stem 12 having the outer end thereof provided with a knob or head 13 corresponding in shape to the head 6. The stem 12 is rotatably mounted within the bore 11 and the inner end of the stem has a ferrule 14 to prevent the end of the pin from wearing. The wall of the bore 11 has a bayonet-shaped slot 15 and extending into said slot is a pin 16, carried by the stem 12. The bayonet-shaped slot 15 permits of thestem 12 and the pin 10 thereof being arranged within the bore 11, and after said stem is correctly positioned, the longitudinal portion of the slot 15 is closed by a.

plug 17 This plug is positioned upon the stem whereby when said stem is pushed into the bore, the plug will enter the longitudinal portion of the slot.

The stem 12 is provided with a recess 18 and arranged longitudinally of said stem is a pin 19 that extends across the recess 18. This pin is adapted to engage a hook 20, carried by the flat face 21 of the end of the section 2. The flat faces 3 of the sections 1 and 2 are formed by cutting away the confronting faces of said sections to form a longitudinal slot 22 that provides suflicient clearance for the upper ends of curtains. The outer end of the section 2 is also cut away to form the flat face 21 and a shoulder 23 adapted to engage a shoulder 24 of the enlargedendlO of the section 1.

To look the section 2 in a closed position with the hook20 extending through an opening 25 in theenlarged end 10 of the section 1, said hook extending into the recess 18 of the stem 12. It is then only necessary to rotate said stem to move the pin 19 under the hook and lock said hook within the opening 25. The pin 16limits the movement of the stem 12, and said pin 16 determining the open and closed positions of said stem.

It is thought that the manner of manipulating the pole will be apparent without further description, and while in the drawing there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the structural elements thereof are susceptible to such variations as fall Within the scope of the appended claims.

lVhat I' claim is l 1. A curtain pole comprising a main section, a hinged. section having one end thereof pivoted in one end of said main section, said sections having the confronting faces thereof provided with pockets, pieces of felt arranged in the pockets of said sections, said main section having one end thereof enlarged and provided with a longitudinal bore, a rotatable stem arranged. in said bore and provided with a recess, a pin carried by said stem and extending across said recess, a hook carried by the end of said enlarged section and adapted to extend into the enlarged end of said main section and into the recess of said stem to be engaged by the pin thereof, and means carried by said stem for limiting the movement thereof in the enlarged end of said main section.

A curtain pole comprising a main section, a hinged section provided with a tongue pivotally mounted in one end of said main section, said main section having the opposite end thereof enlarged and provided with. a longitudinal bore, a stem rotatably mounted'in said bore and having a recess formed therein, a pin carried by said stem and eX- tending across said recess, a hook carried by Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner the end of-said hinged section andadapted to extend into the enlarged end of said main section and into the recess of said stem to be engaged by the pin thereof, and means carried by said stem for retaining said stem within the bore of said main section.

A curtain pole comprising a main section, a hinged sectionprovided with a tongue pivotally mounted in one end of said main 40 section, said main section having the opposite end'thereof enlarged and provided with a longitudinal bore, a stem rotatably mounted in said bore and having a recess formed therein, a pin carried by said stem and eX- tending across said recess a hook carried by the end of said hinged section and adapted to extend into the enlarged end of said main section and into the recess of said stem to be engaged by the pin thereof, means carried by said stem for retaining said stem Within the bore of said main sectlon, and means arranged in the confronting face of said sec tions for frictionally holding the upper ends of curtains between said sections.
