t oswAIm Max Haicom), or GARDNER, MASSACHUSETTS.
To allwltom t may cocem ,Bit own that I, OSWALD M. HEROLD, a he United States, and a resident in the county of Worcester and State of'Massachusetts, have invented a. new
,Numbers of which the following is a full,
clear, and exact description invention is a holder for registration num ers of automobiles, motor cycles, and
'vehicles in general, and it comprises a clamp 7 designed to be attached to the radiator base or any other suitable support on the auto'- mobileor other vehicle, and having fastenvto imposition to be readily seen when in use.
Reference is to belhad to the accompany-` ing drawings forming a part of this specification, which the same characters of reference indicate the vsame parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a viewof the front of an auto- -mobile, showing my registration number holder in place; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal horizontal section of the clamp and the number plate supported by it; and Fig. 3
im roved vregistration number holder shown secured to the radiator base 2. It
, consists of a pair of hinged members 3, the
adjacent ends of which arepivotally con.
-nected, Vas indicated at et', in any suitable i l of the members 3, these members are Curved toward each other as shown at 3', and then extend away from the pivotal connection 4 for a short distance 4in approximately parallel directions. The members 3 are then bent outward, forming alined sections 5. These sections 5 are forwardly bent, as
l. shown at 6, and then bent outward, as shown or'coiled over, as shown at 8.
at 7. The sections 7 have their ends turned Each of the sections 7 has a longitudinal slot 9 therein, band this slot 9 receives a bolt or nut 10, by means of which the number plate 4' is secured to the cla-mp.
The sections 3 of the members 3 have apertures 12 in each, and through these apertures passes'. a 'bolt 11', ,by means of i which the clamp is fastened in position on fes `lany support, the .bolt l1 serving to draw the sections 3 together, mak-ing them tightly ing devices by means of which the number plate is secured to the clamp and held therestores,
' dinarily, the clamp is designed to receive a -plate of suchsize that the lateral edges thereof will be engaged by the turned-over ends 8, but obviously I may use my clamp to fix a smaller plate in position if necessary.
While I have shown the members 3 of my clamp as having alined sections 5,'the forward-extending sections 6, and the outturned ends 7 ,it is obviousthat I may so form my clamp that the sections 5 and 7 lwill lie inthe same plane, that is, I may `do away entirely with the sections 6 and Amake the sections 5 long enough to receive the bolts 10 in their ends, if desired.
It will be observedthat by providing the alined sections 5 and the forwardly-bent sections 6, a plate of substantially the. relative dimensions shown on the drawings could be held securely in place on the clamp, even should the bolts lO not be securely tightened. This is because, by screwing up the bolt 11. the sections 5 can be drawn togetherand as soon as the outer ends of the slot 9 engage the Shanks of the bolts 10, the plate will be firmly secured to the'holder.
While I have shown and described my improved clamp as being designed forholding registration number plates and supporting the same in position upon automobiles .and other vehicles, it is obvious that I may use it for signs, placards or any other thing of. the sort that it is desired 'to exhibit in show-windows and other public places.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent l. A device of the kind described comprising a clamp having a pair ot members pivoted together at their adjacent ends, said members being curved toward each other adjacent said pivot, and then being bent away from each other, forming outwardlybent alined sections, a fastening member carried by said members between their pivoted ends Iandvsaid alined sections, to draw said alined sections toward each other; said outwardly-bent alined.,l sections being bent forward near to their vouter ends, and then outward to form terminal portions,

engage the support on which the clamp is and having longitudinal slots formed in said terminal portions, and fastening devices carried by said slotted terminal portions to secure a sign plate totheclamping 5 members, said Fastening devices lbeing ad-A 'justably mounted in the slotted termina-l portions.
2. Ay device of the kind described comprising a clamp having a pair of members 10 yieldably secured to each other,` said members being bent toward each other to engage' a suitable support, and then being bent away from each other to forin'outwardly-extending alined Sections, and a fastening member ends to secure a sign plate' to saidclamping 2o members. i
