EXTENSIBLE TABLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, BYRON ll. O ARNOV SKY, who am a subject of the Klng of Great Britain, residing at Detroit, county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Extensible Tables, and declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to extensible tables, and has for its object an improved device of this type, the parts of whose centrally scpa rable top portion can be caused to move away from one another by a pull upon one end of the table and whose supplemental leaf can be moved into position by the operator Without moving from his position at the end of the table.
In the drawings :-Figure 1, is a plan view of the table with the top finishing boards removed. Fig. 2, is a plan with the separable parts of the table moved away from one another and with the supplemental leaf shown in dotted lines in position between them. Figs. 3 and 41 are details of the lever and longitudinal connections between the table frame and the lazy tongs arm pieces by which the parts of the table are forced apart. Fig. 5, is a sectional elevation crosswise of the table showing the mechanism for hoisting the supplemental leaf into position. Fig. 6, is a lengthwise elevation, partly in section along the lines 66 of Fig. 1. Fig. 7, is a sectional end elevation of the locking mechanism for the supplemental parts of the table. Fig. 8, is a perspective showing the cut-away locking latch in which the nose of the catch piece engages. Fig. 9, is an elevation, partly in section, of the supplemental leaf in fully raised position, the fully lower position being shown in Fig. 5. Fig. 10, is an enlarged plan of the central part of the table showing the projecting levers or arms.
1 and 2 represent the separable parts of a table which may be supported in any desired way, and which, when in fully closed position as shown in Fig. 1, form a complete circle for the table top. They are separably slidable along the parallel ways 3, 4; and 5, and 3*, 4* and 5, so that at all times the diametrical lines or edges of separation between the parts when they are closed, are maintained parallel.
Linked to the outer or rounded edge of the table and to the under face thereof are the link members (i and 7 which are pivotally connected respectively to the centrally pivoted lever arms 8 and 9, whose end portion not attached to either of the parts (3 or 7 are similarly attached to levers 6 and 7 which are pivotally attached to the rounded peripheral portion of the other part of the table. These lever arms being pivoted at '10 produce a lazy tongs effect, as regards their projecting influence, when either end of the table is pulled, upon the opposite set of levers and consequently the other section of the table; that is, whatever opening effect is produced on the half of the table located between the pivot point 10 and the operator by the pull on that side or edge is, through the medium of the lazy tongs arms which extend on the far side of the pivot point 10, communicated thereto, to project that section of the table correspondingly to the degree of opening effected on the operators side by the pull toward him and away from the pivot point.
A pull upon one end of the table is sufficient, not only to draw that section of the table toward the operator, but as well to cause the projection to an equal degree in the opposite direction of the other section of the table through the medium of the lazy tongs levers and links.
When the table is pulled open to the desired degree, that hand of the operator not engaged in actuating the table, may reach to one side or the other to turn the drop end 11 of the supplemental leaf 12 using the curved edge 13 as a pivotal center, the end portion 11 being pivotally supported, as by the link 14, one end of which is shown connected to a small bracket piece on the under side of the end portion 11, with one lateral edge adapted to lie adjacent to the adjacent end of the supplemental leaf 12, so as to swing about it as a center as it (the drop end 11) is raised or lowered. To this drop end 11 is pivotally attached a link 14, which connects at 15 to the rock lever 16, pivoted on a bracket 17, which rises from the under frame of the table. The end 18 of the rock lever carries a roller 18 which, when the link 14 and the lever 16 are actuated as described, forces upwardly the supplemental I is attached to the swinging edge of the drop piece 11, its movement is communicated to the centrally pivoted lever 38 and thence to the link 39 so that the oppositely located drop piece 11 is actuated at the same time.
The finishing edge or apron piece 20 at each end of the supplemental leaf as thus raised, registers with the apron 21 on the main table part and thus presents the appearance of a completed or finished table. When the supplemental leaf is no longer de sired, the swing of the end portion 11 to its original position causes the end 18 of the rock lever 16 to drop and consequently lowers the supplemental leaf 12 to its position of non-use into which position it is exactly guided by the pins 22. The supplemental leaf 12 is shorter than the diameter of the main table and is easily included within the frame of the main table.
To prevent the unintended separation of the table parts when the use of the table in its round form is desired, there is provided a latch piece 23 which extends radially toward the peripheral edge from the center. In one of the several holes 24 provided in the piece 23, engages the nose 25 of the latching hook 25, which is connected by means of the link 26 with the finger lever 27 at the end of the table. When this is actuated it lifts the nose 25 from that one of the holes 24 in which it then engages and with- WVhat I claim is 1. An extensible table, having, in combina tion with a pair of separable base members, a series of link and lever members pivotally supported upon one of said base members, a supplemental leaf lying loosely upon the depressed free ends of said lever members in a normal position of non-use beneath the top surface of the table, a finishing portion pivotally supported adjacent one end of said supplemental leaf in position to swing thereabout as a center and to which the other ends of said lever members from those whereon said supplemental leaf rests are attached, said supplemental leaf being adapted to be vertically projected through the space between the separated base members by the movement of said levers under the actuation of the swing of said finishing portion to its extended position,..substantially as described.
2. In an extensible table, in combination with a base composed of a plurality of separable parts, a series of slide members attached near their ends to one or the other of said parts, whereby their desired relative position is maintained when the parts are drawn away from one another, a plurality of angled lever members pivotally supported by one of said separable base parts, a supplemental leaf normally located beneath the plane of the table top and resting loosely on the free ends of said pivoted levers, a finishing portion pivotally supported with one edge adjacent an end of said supplemental leaf and adapted to swing thereabout as a center and link members connecting one end of each of said levers with said finishing portion, whereby, upon the swing thereof about its hinged edge, the levers are actuated and the supplemental leaf is vertically hoisted from its position of non-use through the space between the separated parts of the table into the plane of the top portions thereof, substantially as described.
